Mr Hawazi Daipi served as Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC for 18 years. During this period, Mr Hawazi initiated several projects. First, Mr Hawazi championed the Marsiling Care Programmes for the needy and underprivileged in our GRC as he believed that it was important to care for those who needed help most. Mr Hawazi also established the Marsiling Chinese Orchestra in 2004 to promote appreciation of the Chinese orchestra among Marsiling residents, as well as to foster a closer collaboration between the grassroots organizations, neighbourhood schools and residents.

As Chairman of Sembawang Town Council for the last 12 years, Mr Hawazi was instrumental in making Sembawang Town Council a resident-centric organization. Among the many projects he initiated, construction of a 7.4 km cycling tracks in Sembawang and Woodlands Town is one project which provides great convenience to both cyclists and pedestrians. The notions of kampung spirit was very important toMr Hawazi who believed deeply in a rooted and close community. Our kampung community in Marsiling today, is his proud legacy.

Ms Ellen Lee Geck Hoon, PBM served asVice-Chairman of Sembawang GRC Town Council for two years. As Vice-Chairman, Ms Ellen Lee had given pertinent advice to the Town Council on how to improve the estates and personally oversee much of the implementation of these improvement projects. Minister Khaw shared in his speech during the Woodlands National Day Dinner, “Thro ugh these 10 years, Ellen Lee put her he art and soul into serving the residents in her wards in Woodlands. She’s there all the time - house visits, MPS, grassr oots activities, day and night...she used her legal knowl edge and social network to go the extra mile to help vulnerable families get ba ck on theirfeet again.”

MR HAWAZI ANDMS ELLEN LEE

TRIBUTE TO

We have been very fortunate to have enjoyed great leadership here in Sembawang GRC. Mr Hawazi Daipi and Ms Ellen Lee Geck Hoon, PBM, are both shining examples of this exemplary leadership. In all things they gave their best, and the above quote perfectly sums up the years that Mr Hawazi and Ms Ellen have given to our GRC. They have been leaders of action, walking the ground to listen to our people and working hard to implement those necessary improvements that would benefit our residents. Today, we honor their contributions to their community.

“Leadership is an action, not a position.”

THANK YOU, MR HAWAZI!

THANK YOU, MS ELLEN!

SG50 is indeed a milestone, an important page unveiled in the chronicles of Singapore’s history. We have come a long way, transforming ourselves into a modern, thriving metropolis it is today. This year’s National Observance ceremonies claimed many firsts:

This was the first time all observance ceremonies island-wide were held on the same day, at the same time. This was the first time Singaporeans were able to hear for themselves Mr Lee read the Proclamation. The recording was broadcast at 9 am at all National Day Observance Ceremonies and on all local TV and radio channels.

The festive mood was even more pronounced this year, as residents celebrated Singapore’s golden jubilee with National Day Dinners and National Day Observance Ceremonies in Admiralty, Marsiling, Sembawang, Woodgrove and Woodlands divisions. Games and cultural performances were put up, much to the delight of those who attended.

OF SINGLISH IS BORN IN US. IT IS A UNIQUE LANGUAGE THAT ONLY SINGAPOREANS KNOW AND UNDERSTAND. PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD KNOW ABOUT IT BUT I THINK THAT

ONLY SINGAPOREANS KNOW HOW TO USE IT CORRECTLY

have here. We’re constantly spoilt for

choice and food is still a really affordable

thing for us as compared to how it is in

other countries. I can go to any hawker

Early in the morning, about 1500 residents of Sembawang GRC gathered at Admiralty Park on 31 May. Together with Grassroots

Advisers and Adviser to Sembawang Grassroots Organisations, Mr Khaw Boon Wan, a warm-up Zumba exercise was conducted before they walked 2 km from Admiralty Park to Republic Polytechnic (Sports Stadium). For many, this 2 km walk signified the first step towards a healthy lifestyle. A momentary breakaway from their usual sedentary life, many were perspiring after the walk butliking it!

In conjunction with the 28th SEA Games on our home soil, Sembawang GRC launched the Community SEA Games Torch Up during Community Sports Festival 2015 on 31 May. As Mr Khaw Boon Wan lighted up SEA Games Pedestal Cauldron, Advisers and Special Guests turned on dancing tubes. The event reached a climax as residents threw up paper balls with loud cheer “SEA Games 2015!”

Residents tried their hand at some classic games. In all, there were a total of 50 games to mark the Nation’s 50th Birthday Celebration (SG50). Zhuo Jiajie, 27, commented that this was a great opportunity for bonding. It also paved the way for residents to seriously consider sports, any type, as an initiation into a more active lifestyle. The benefits of a healthy lifestyle can only be reaped if we start doing sports early and on a regular basis.

In Sembawang GRC SG50 Discovery Race on 26 July, residents pit their knowledge of Sembawang’s rich history and heritage against one

another. Besides highlighting Singapore’s 50 years of independence, the race aimed to educate the youths on the various milestones of Singapore.

The race, held in Woodlands Galaxy Community Club, was officiated by Grassroots Advisers Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Mr Hawazi Daipi, Ms Ellen Lee Geck Hoon, Mr Vikram Nair and Mr Ong Teng Koon.

The highly interactive and exciting Sembawang GRC SG50 Discovery Race required teams of five youth members from different ethnic backgrounds (14 to 35 years old) to complete all game stations to win the race. Participants learned Singapore’s history by playing the games at the ten game stations located at iconic locations in Sembawang GRC, such as Beaulieu House and Rotherham Gate.

A SG50 Snake and Ladder game kit was also launched during the event. The game incorporated 50 significant events that happened during the past 50 years, such as the two major floods (1978) hijacking of SQ117 (1991), complete withdrawal of British Troops (1976).

Day in day out, we may have exchanged customary greetings with them in the doorway, along the corridors or in the lifts. But how well do we really know them? Yes, I am talking about your neighbours who, other than your immediate family members, would most likely be the people you turn to for help in times of emergency and need.

MDM CHONG WENG YOKEMdm Chong Weng Yoke, 70, epitomises the healthy lifestyle of the silver generation. From 7 to 8.30 am, Monday to Saturday, she has been teaching for free Taiji, and health-preserving Qigong for more than twenty years. Incidentally, two students under her were struck with cancer. Mdm Chong advised them to come for her classes only after their chemotherapy treatments had been completed. Their health improved significantly after their Qigong practices.

Besides giving free classes, Mdm Chong is also very active in RC activities and voluntary work. She helps to organise activities and outings for the RC, such as visits to Gardens by the Bay. She encourages new citizens or residents to join activities organised by Woodgrove Community Centre. This helps them to assimilate seamlessly into our neighbourhood through interaction among one another.

At times, Mdm Chong reveals her altruistic nature through her involvement in charity work. She has helped raise funds for the Children Cancer Society. If time permits, she accompanies senior residents to the banks or hospitals. As they have difficulty in communicating with the staff, Mdm Chong

can help to translate. At times she bought pencils and notebooks for children from single parent families.

When asked why she was doing all these, Mdm Chong replied, “I want to create a big family, where everyone can come here with a joyful heart, and return home with ajoyful heart.”

MR MICHAEL KELLYResidents staying around Marsiling are very familiar with Mr Michael Kelly. A neighbour wrote about Mr Michael Kelly, “Mr Kelly is well known to the community for his graciousness and kindness… A confidante and role model to children and senior citizens in the neighbourhood, he would frequently pay visits to his neighbours to enquire about their well-being. If they require any assistance… he would contact the relevant authorities to find a solution. Mr Kelly is indeed a shining example of what a good neighbor should be.”

He may look formidable but as soon as he starts talking to you, you will understand why he is so well-loved among his neighbours –

both young and old. Mr Kelly describes himself as someone who loves children, chatting with other people, listening to their stories, and telling stories. Perhaps that’s why he conducts storytelling and reading classes for young children every Tuesday evening at the Residents’ Committee (RC) in Marsiling. He also has a passion for reading, a habit he has cultivated since young. Through these classes, he hopes to inculcate in the young minds a love for reading as well as help them build their confidence in speaking English.

Exercising has been ingrained in Mr Kelly’s lifestyle. Up till today, at 50 years old, he still runs every day. He believes firmly that everyone should do some forms of exercise, even if it is just walking. He reminds the elderly time and time again that “medication isn’t enough to clear your cholesterol” and thus organises a brisk-walking session on Fridays.

Usually, it’s the elderly who would join him as “they need someone to look after them.” He takes it upon himself to ask after them. Sometimes, he even takes them for coffee to hear them out or just chats with them, anything to make them feel a little less lonely. “My dad died when I was at a young age. I remember how much my mum suffers. Right now, when I see all these people I always remember about my mum. And I always think if no one is going to give a hand to these people, they are going to be alone always. So, I try to help them. I will write down whatever requirements they need and send to CC. I will send to the RC manager and Community Development Council (CDC) and seek help for them.”

One can learn much from having a conversation with Mr Kelly. He likes to share nuggets of wisdom with others. For instance,

MDM AMINAH BINTE ABBAS Mdm Aminah Binte Abbas, 70 was genuinely surprised that she was selected for an interview. Formerly an English teacher at a primary school, she shared a maxim which her late husband lived by. Being an active grassroots member, he told her it is important to come down to the level of your neighbours in order to connect with them.

Since then, she has been applying this tenet in her everyday life. Her neighbour, Mr Hew Loy, 64, once helped her to repair some plumbing work at her house. To return his good deeds, she bakes cookies for him every Chinese New Year.

When she knew that the family doctor liked to eat kuih lapis and butter cakes, she would bake them and give it to him as a present. She even bakes cookies for the cashiers at Giant Supermarket opposite her house. During Hari Raya, she shares her home-cooked delicacies such as rendang, sambal goreng, and ketupat with the neighbours. She confessed that she felt a profound sense of satisfaction whenever she shared with others, be it food or recipes.

Her neighbour Nori described her maternal instincts: “Last year, I was out running errands and I could not come home on time. I called her for help to wait for my son at the void deck, who was coming back from school at 3.45 pm. My boy stayed at her house till I came home.”

“I hope that today, the youngers will (learn to)

mix with different races so that our country will always be united as a multiracial country.”

when he urged residents to display the Singapore flag, he was mindful to educate them on the polarity that politics tends to create,” I am not here to tell you about politics. I’m here to tell you let’s celebrate Singapore’s birthday together. Put your problems with politics aside. Without you, I won’t be around. Without me, you won’t be here. We people all join together, that’s why we have Singapore. You remember that. Because we worked for it, for the country to be in this place right now…”

His patriotism extends to the future generation of Singapore. He said, “I hope that today, the youngers will (learn to) mix with different races so that our country will always be united as a multiracial country.”

MDM AMINAH BINTE ABBAS

“LAST YEAR, I WAS OUT RUNNING ERRANDS AND I COULD NOT COME HOME ON TIME. I CALLED HER

FOR HELP TO WAIT FOR MY SON AT THE VOID DECK, WHO WAS COMING BACK

FROM SCHOOL AT 3.45 PM. MY BOY STAYED AT HER

HOUSE TILL I CAME HOME.” Know any good neighbours in your neighbourhood? Tell us - we might just feature them in our next issue. Email to [email protected]. Win a token of appreciation if your entry is picked.

“SAYANGSEMBAWANG”

Even as we reflect and express our love and gratitude for Singapore, it is also important to love the community around us.

Sembawang is a special place, with abundant greenery, open spaces, a rich history and a strong kampung spirit. Many residents know one another and have extended family members living nearby. We have so many interesting stories within our community, waiting to be told. That is why “Sayang Sembawang” was launched.

“Sayang Sembawang” is a SG50 initiative for Sembawang residents that celebrates the Kampung Sembawang spirit and community. A series of posters and videos have been released throughout the past one month. These posters and videos feature people who live, work or play in Sembawang and call Sembawang their home. Over these four pages, you will see the posters of the 10 people, as well as, some of their stories and quotes. They are also featured in a series of “Sayang Sembawang” videos. Watch these videos on Kampung Sembawang Facebook page.

You too, can express how you “Sayang Sembawang”. Share with us your stories, your fond memories of Sembawang on Facebook or Instagram, with #sayangsembawang.

Love Singapore, “Sayang Sembawang”! - ADELE GOH, DANCE ARTIST

We have come a long way since 1965. Sembawang, like the rest of Singapore, has been transformed since then. In line with founding PM Lee Kuan Yew’s bold vision, declared at the Sri Narayana Mission in Yishun 50 years ago, Singapore has grown “from a mudflat to a metropolis”. This is why SG50 is such a special year for us.

“NATURE OFFERS BOTH BEAUTY AND A PLACE FOR

CONTEMPLATION. IT IS LIVING, BREATHING AND MOVING, LIKE A DANCER. I WANT TO EXPRESS THIS BEAUTY THROUGH DANCE.”

“MY LIFE WOULD NOT BE THE SAME WITHOUT BLK 178.

IT WAS AT A BASKETBALL COURT THERE THAT I MET MY FIRST COACH. HE WAS AN ELDERLY UNCLE WHO

TAUGHT ME NOT JUST BASKETBALL SKILLS, BUT LIFE SKILLS. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR HIM, MY LIFE

SEMBAWANG

“IN THE PAST, THERE WERE KAMPUNGS ALL AROUND, AND

THIS MOSQUE WAS THE CENTRE OF EVERYTHING. SOME THINGS

HAVE CHANGED AND SOME THINGS HAVEN’T. EVEN TODAY, PEOPLE

WHO USED TO STAY AROUND HERE STILL COME BACK TO THIS MOSQUE.

THIS IS OUR GATHERING PLACE, THERE’S SO MUCH SENTIMENTAL

VALUE. THIS PLACE WAS BUILT BY THE KAMPUNG PEOPLE, WITH OUR

OWN HANDS.”
