Our emphasis will be “in the Way of Mary.” This year, more so, we are called to reflect upon our words and actions and relate to each other in Mary’s way. Who was Mary? She was a woman, daughter, wife, mother, confidant, counsellor, comforter, provider, believer, supporter, servant, friend, cousin and much more. Mary was a woman of courage, strength, ingenuity, compassion, humility, service, commitment and fidelity. And, we are called to follow Mary. Mary is for teachers the perfect model of the Marist educator, as she was for St Marcellin. As woman and layperson, Jesus's first follower, she inspires our personal faith. As educator of Jesus at Nazareth, she inspires our teaching approach. It is going to be demanding to rise to the challenge, but rise we will! In the Way of Mary Welcome everyone to a new year. It is a new beginning, yet it is a continuation of what went on before us, building on our successes. It is exciting that we will all be playing a part to create the future. Our Marist Pillar theme for 2013 is “In the Way of Mary,” Mary being the mother of God, Jesus Christ. Science Congratulations to the following boys on their very successful external NCEA results in science.

Congratulations to David Smith and Chris Sims who attended national science courses over the Christmas break. Chris Sims attended a “Hands on Science” week at Auckland university along with 100 other students from all over the country. Special thanks to Hutt Rotary who paid for half of the course fees. David Smith went to Canterbury University for a week long course along with emphasis on electro-engineering. David was chosen from hundreds of applicants to have his course and accommodation fees paid for. The course was for a very select 15 students. Both David and Chris have come back very enthusiastic about the options that are open at these two universities. Thanks to the many parents who sent in clean ice cream containers and 1L yogurt pottles. If you have ice cream and yogurt pottles please send them into school. Plastic film canisters. If you have any of these at home and you do not want them, then please send them into the science department. We use them for experiments. They are very hard to get hold of.

New staff appointments

Careers

Mrs Sue Johnson has been appointed Head of Learning Support. She comes from St Peter’s College in Palmerston North and will also be teaching Religious Education.

Mr Hayden Mourits taught last year at St John’s College in Hamilton and this year joins us to teach Physical Education.

Mrs Natalya Mansell brings her experience from Samuel Marsden, St Catherine’s and Tawa Colleges and is teaching English and Religious Education.

Ms Grace Zhang brings overseas experience to our Mathematics Department and specialises in Accounting.

Mr Chris Hosnell is an old boy of SBC and since then has taught at Wainuiomata and St Oran’s Colleges. Chris has been appointed Head of Faculty, Mathematics/Accounting at St Bernard’s.

I have given talks to several year levels suggesting Career issues students need to address this year. Students at Year 12 & 13 need to be aware that Weltec & Whitireia offer Trades Academy and Youth Guarantee courses for free and that students can gain National trade certificates, as well as NCEA on those courses. Some students would be better off taking this option if they are not committed to a good year’s study at school. (Ms J Lomax, Careers Advisor) Students considering university are urged to research what is ‘out there’. A few I have mentioned are: Surveying at Otago, Radiation Therapy at Otago (Wgtn), Forestry at Canterbury, Applied engineering at Massey as well as the unique opportunity offered at IPC in Palmerston North. Also parents need to be aware that students moving away and staying in Halls of Residence, will need to pay $7000 - $9000 on top of what students can borrow to pay for accommodation. Parents are welcome to contact me on any career issues. [email protected]

The Y13 Retreat was held at the Silverstream

Retreat Centre on 7/8 February. The Retreat was

themed ‘The Summit’, which is the where the boys

are at in their school careers at St Bernard’s. We

looked at win/win negotiating, wrote a letter to the

Archbishop about being young Catholics today, did a

session on Social justice, brotherhood and looking

at the values these men want to promote this year in

the school which will be the hallmarks of their legacy.

A big thanks to all the staff who were involved! PF,

SE, SU, WL DC, FO, PI, MF, HI, HT Callum Dickin-

son and Br Tim. The next retreat is Y12 on 8 March.

Level 1 Andy Su, Ben Van Woerkom 3 excellences from 3 papers, Stephen Clark; 2 excellences and 1 merit from 3 papers. Level 2 Physics: Chris Sims with 2 excellences from 2 papers Level 3 Chemistry: Yuxuan Zhou with 2 excellences and 1 merit from 3 papers. Sport Instrument Lessons Music lessons have begun! If you still haven’t signed up, and really want to be involved, see Mrs McIntyre in the music department urgently!

All students enrolled in year 10 – 13 music classes are taking lessons and must remember to attend lessons weekly. If you are taking lessons, you must practice. We suggest beginners practice 10 to 15 minutes a day (or as many days as possible in a week) and NCEA music students should practice at least 30 minutes a day.

Attendance Lessons occur weekly and students are expected to attend every lesson. Students are given a ‘lesson pass’ which they show to their classroom teacher and they can keep track of weekly lesson times via this pass and the timetable in the music suite corridor. If students are unable to attend their lesson, they must inform Mrs McIntyre or their instrument tutor as soon as possible.

If you miss a lesson without a valid explanation, you will be given a Performing Arts detention which

happens on Wednesday 3.15 – 4.15pm.

Co-curricular Activities: St Bernard’s Competition Choir – Fridays All ages welcome. Come along for a bit of fun! See Mrs McIntyre to join. Junior Voices Choir – Wednesday lunchtime Year 7 – 9. Lots of fun! Join us in the chapel. Barbershop – Tuesday Lunchtime Like to sing in harmony? Then barbershop is for you. Bands – See Mrs McIntyre if you would like to be in a band. We offer RnB, Jazz, Rock and Reggae. Being in a band is social, fun and rewarding. If you have any queries regarding such issues as payment, instrument hire or joining a group, please do not hesitate to contact the music department on 560 9250 ext 891.

Music Welcome to sport 2013. Our Sportsmen and supporters are gearing up for another busy year.

Summer sport is well under way with cricket, tennis, touch, bowls, golf and water polo teams in action. Athletics training is on twice a week in preparation for the SBC Athletic Championships followed by the Hutt Valley and Wellington Regional events. A reminder that all boys need to check the sports draws on the gym notice boards for when and where they are playing and arrive in correct uniform. We also require parent support to enable our teams to play. We have no Senior Touch team this year as there was no parent support to coach or manage the team. We like to see all our boys participating in sport but this will only happen with the help of the school community. A reminder too that the Board of Trustees Policy of “No Pay No Play” is now in effect and all sports fees and registration forms are now overdue. If there is genuine financial hardship please see Mr Fava to discuss the matter in private and how we can help. The School’s Senior Water Polo team is off to the North Island Champs in March with the aim of qualifying for Premier Nationals in April. This year’s team will be one of our strongest for many years and we wish them every success. Our 1st XV is also away to Auckland for the annual Marist Quadrangular Rugby Tournament featuring St Paul’s and Sacred Heart from Auckland and St Patrick’s College and St Bernard’s from Wellington. It is usually a bruising encounter with the Auckland schools and provides excellent pre-season competition for the boys. Winter sports are already in pre-season training and team trials/selections for rugby, football and basketball etc. are not far away so please ensure that your son is aware of days and times of trainings. Football registration has taken place and we have a very large number of boys wanting to play for the college. Clubs have first call on players who are 14th grade and lower, BUT if your son is in Years 7,8 or 9 and they want to play for the college then they are very welcome to join us. Every season we have a team in either the 13th or 14th grade of Capital football. Coaches and managers. If you would like to help us in this regard then please do not hesitate to contact Mr Higson at the college or at home on 577 2417. Trials These will be held at the end of February and early March for the Junior 1 team and the 1st and 2nd XI’s. The players need to be getting into fitness training now. Old boots. If you have some boots that no longer fit and you would like to donate to another player or for us to try and sell then please send them in with your son to Mr Higson. Congratulations to Taban Makoii who is currently playing for the “Team Wellington” Youth team and is scoring a lot of goals for them. Taban’s next stop is the Phoenix youth team.

Cricket congratulations to Jack Imray who is playing in the Hazlett Shield senior men’s competition for Wainuiomata and has scored a couple of 50’s and taken more than 10 wickets. Great results Jack. A special thanks to the following businesses that assisted the SBC Rugby Academy in its latest fundraiser. The academy delivered phone books around the Lower Hutt area to raise funds to help our rugby teams.
