The format was Pro/Am draw. Winters Park resident Ron Dumais drew Merv Lambe (Zephyrhills Shuffleboard Club) and they survived some close calls but Dumais’ home-court knowledge paid off. Lambe did his share to keep them in the matches but Dumais was on his game. He won three matches by shooting the opponent into the kitchen on his last shot, including the championship game where he made the kitchen and scored to squeak out victory. Strong Showing

In Leesburg, BradentonThe Florida Shuffleboard association got

a good dose of Zephyrhills shuffle power

on Feb. 13 in Leesburg and Bradenton. Glenda Brake (ZSC) qualified for the State Hall of Fame with the same partner, Diane Bardsley (ZSC) that she qualified for the District Hall of Fame two weeks prior. The duo won the Women’s Division Championship. Katy Walker and Pauline Murphy (both of ZSC) finished second and and Judy Ledger (Betmar) playing with Lorraine Merrifield also placed. Merrifield scored the last point she needed to qualify as a State Am. David Earle (ZSC) playing with Paul Prescott of Lakeland won the Men’s Division with John Houghtaling and Gary McGaffey (both of ZSC) finishing second; Lyle Walker (ZSC) playing with Leesburg partner Jeff Luneau also placed.

Earl Ball, who lost his partner, traveled to Bradenton to play the Golf Lakes State Championship with one of the old guys, Dave Minnich, of Bradenton. Dave is a consummate Pro (who happens to be 80 years old and therefore qualifies as an old guy). They won the championship.

Bakers Acres Couple Win 4-Park Tourney

The 4-Park Amateur Tournament was held Feb. 15 at Sleepy Hollow Shuffleboard Club. Cindy Wood and Ken Thomas of Betmar made it to the finals to face Jim and Judy Rocco of Bakers Acres. A back-and-forth contest ended with the Roccos winning the championship for this year.

Shufflers Take State Sponsored ChampionshipsLakeland hosted the Florida State

Shuffleboard Association State Sponsored Championships on Feb. 7. Zephyrhills displayed its power once again with Diane Bardsley and Glenda Brake winning the Women’s Championship, and Mike Seyfer winning the Men’s Championship with a partner from Lakeland.

“It feels good,” a happy Bishop said after the win. “I’ve been waiting for this all year long. Since the summer season ended, all I’ve been thinking about is baseball. It feels good to come out here and get a win in the season opener in front of the home crowd.”

Ridgewood took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an unearned run as a result of a pair of Bulldog errors. That was the only time they would score. For the next six innings, the Bulldogs played error free baseball and the pitching from Bishop and relievers Brandon Ichimura and Zach Novo shut down the Rams.

The Bulldogs got all four of their runs in the third inning when Bishop led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by Kolbe Lupinek. Cherokee Hagans and Joe Mortellaro each added RBI singles and scored in the inning.

Mortellaro led the offense going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and a run and Bishop went 2-for-3 and a run scored.

“We have to hit a lot better,” said Zephyrhills coach Rusty Guynn. “We have kids trying to put everything out of here and lifting the ball instead of hitting the ball on the ground and having them make plays. We gave a lot of easy outs away.”

Guynn said in order for the Bulldogs to be effective, they are going have to manufacture runs.

“We are still going to have to get to the point where we take chances,” Guynn said. “We have to put people in motion and bunt the ball.”

In Friday’s matchup against Brooks Debartolo Collegiate, the Bulldogs received another fine pitching performance from lefty Drew Brown in the 9-2 win. Brown went six innings allowing just three hits while striking out four. Two runs were scored in the third, but both were unearned as the defense failed.

The Bulldogs scored seven runs on just one hit in the fourth inning as the Brooks pitching imploded.

Zephyrhills faces Sunlake at home tonight and go on the road to River Ridge on Tuesday.

Steer Sale Highlights Fair

The Albert A. Barthle Livestock Pavilion was chock-full of curious viewers and interested buyers last Thursday evening for the annual steer sale.

Agriculture students came from across Pasco County to show the steer they have spent countless hours raising, feeding, and grooming in one of the biggest nights of the Pasco County Fair. A steer normally weighs in at 1,000 pounds, give or take, and the youth displayed great professionalism as they led their steer around a ring in front of hundreds of spectators.

During the steer show the night before, Feb. 21, the students presented their animals and their knowledge of them to judges. About a dozen awards were handed out for the different groups, ages and categories. The Steer Showmanship event was held Feb. 20.

Behind the scenes in the pavilion, students were racing around, brushing their steers to make them look their best, lining up their animals and searching for their friends. Once their sale was made, the agriculture students could be spotted enjoying popcorn or cotton candy out on the fairgrounds, a whole year of hard work finally settled.

Grand Champion Steer was awarded to Jayden Pinkston, with Possum Trot 4-H, who earned the same award in 2017 as a rookie. The now 11-year old is a student at Academy at the Farm, and when it was time to walk her steer around the ring, she was even more confident than last year.

Jayden’s steer weighed in at 1,214 pounds and ended up being sold for $5.85 per pound. The grand champion is always sold for the most money, with no other sale allowed to surpass it. Chad “Cracker” Johnson from Chiefland was the auctioneer for the evening.

Reserve Grand Champion Steer was awarded to Christopher Jones, also with Possum Trot 4-H. His steer weighed in at 1,234 pounds and was at first sold for $5 a pound but later moved up to $5.84.

Class 1 winner was Emily Jennings from 4 Bar 4-H. Class 2 winner was Madison Tilton from Zephyrhills Senior FFA.

Ava Geraci from Progressive 4-H was awarded Light Champion with her steer weighing in at 1,074 pounds.

Class 4 winner was Steven Paris from A New Era 4-H Club. Class 5 went to Dylan McVay of Wesley Chapel FFA and Class 6 winner was Emmalyn Dunn from Land O’ Lakes Sr. FFA.

The steer belonging to Peyton Russel, Progressive 4-H, was dubbed Heavy Champion weighing in at 1,330. Reserve Heavy Champion went to Justice Szetela, Land O’ Lakes Senior FFA, with a steer weighing in at 1,374.

Madison Shipley of Zephyrhills Senior FFA was awarded the Senior Showmanship award.

Camryn Farquhar, Wesley Chapel FFA, was given the Intermediate Record Book FFA award while Danielle Christian, Dade City Senior FFA, took home the Senior Record Book FFA award.

Possum Trot 4-H members took both Record Book 4-H awards with Madison Castle receiving the

intermediate award and Case Hamilton receiving the senior award.

The largest steer of the night weighed in at 1,476 pounds, presented by Victoria Watkins of Possum Trot, and was bought by the Dade City News and Jarrett Ford for $3.35 per pound.

Miss Pasco County and PHS alumna Courtney Graham sang the national anthem and a prayer was said before the steer sale commenced.

Also prior to the steer sale, an announcement was made about the Boots and Roots Foundation, which supports the fair and ag students each year. The non-profit 501(c)3 was founded in 2015 and aims to support local agriculture, outdoors and sportsman community. Last year the organization donated $10,000 to the Pasco County Fair Association, but this year was able to increase the donation to $13,500, which was dispersed to 100 qualifying students.

Visit bootsandroots.org or the Boots and Roots Facebook page for more information on the Education Scholarship and the foundation’s upcoming fundraising events, which contribute to these and other donations.
