  • Hello SBHANA Members,

Happy Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Month!!!The City of Edmonton Mayor, Don Iveson, has officiallyproclaimed June as Spina Bifida and HydrocephalusAwareness Month. On June 1st, we saw the High Level Bridgehere in Edmonton get lit "green" specifically for us. Fingerscrossed that next year it will be a more vibrant hue, though. Ihope that some of you were able to make it over to checkout the bridge. The Paint for the Skate event held on June12th was a huge success!! We raised just over $1,000 to go towards theSkate. A big thank you to everyone who came out, and to those whogenerously donated silent auction items.

Our next big awareness event features the Skate for Spina Bifida andHydrocephalus, which will be held at Castle Downs Skate Park on Sunday, June25th. Aaron "Wheelz" Fotheringham will be there to show us some tricks and doa meet and greet with those in attendance. We hope to see you there!

In honour of it being spina bifida and hydrocephalus awareness month, we aregoing to have a colouring contest and the winner's coloured picture will befeatured in our next Fall 2017 newsletter. All submissions need to besent back in to the SBHANA Office by August 1st to be considered. Have funcolouring everyone!!!

We have had some big changes inthe office this past month.Recently,I have transitioned into a full-timeposition with the SBHANA and it hasbeen absolutely great so far. A bitof a learning curve, but that was tobe expected. Also, we just hiredour Summer Student, so I havesome company in the office again.Julianne has been a great additionand I am superexcited to see whatshe has planned for our 10thAnnual Hope Classic5/8 kmRun/Walk/Wheel event in RundlePark this summer.During the Fall and Winter, I coach ajunior sledge hockeyteam calledthe Blades for the ParalympicSports Association. It has beensuch arewarding experience forme. This year I had my biggestteam yet, 19 players! When I firststarted we onlyhad 9 players onthe team. I absolutely love seeingjust how much eachplayerprogresses throughout theseason. For some players, this isthe first time theyhave been out onthe ice in a sledge and playing ateam sport no less, but theytransition into it without difficulty. We went to Calgary back in Marchfor the Westerns SledgeHockeyTournament, and theyplayed their best hockey of theseason! We ended upfinishing in3rd place and I couldn’t be prouderCoach even if I tried!! Go BladesGo!
