    Message from our President

It gives me pleasure to share many important moments and highlights through Serendibs Newsletter publication.

Having gone through a fruitful and busy period of time, filled with many activities in and around Serendib, our Editorial Team has come up with an excellent idea to release such memorable moments with theme-based publications one after another.

I can recall that we had our first ever separate induction ceremony which was unique for Serendib, followed by the gala event Annual Awards Night 2015. That was another excellent outcome of Serendibians unity and hard work. Having a series of mock contests and training sessions, the first Speak-A-Thon (speech marathon as we called it) was another achievement our VP Education team exhibited during this period.

Recruitment of some talented and promising members added strength and value to the club which already has committed and skilful members. This was another milestone achieved by our VPM and AVPM this year. This made Serendib to achieve its first ribbon Smedley Award during August/September 2015. Talk up Toastmasters ribbon has now become a reality too, as we have already added 4 members and two more guests are waiting for induction before 31st March. We are sure our able VPM team will do their best to achieve their target. As of today we have 49 members in the main club.

The current status of DCP is Select Distinguished with 7 points made. We have members yet to complete a few of their projects to earn the balance two points to qualify for the President Distinguished Club status this year too.

It has been experienced that the first half of the tenure gave the team little opportunity to develop the skills of its members. This is due to a series of holiday seasons, induction ceremony, awards night celebration, mock contests followed by Club, Area contests etc..., the President and EXCOM is determined to ease the burden of next EXCOM (2016/2017) to claim the DCP at ease, before January. This will enable the club to get ready for the competitions ahead of time and undergo trainings required to face challenges.

The awareness and demand for Gavel membership increased tremendously. We already reached 50 members in Boys club and about 30 members in Girls Gavel. The EXCOM has already initiated a process to make a shadow Boys Club to manage the currently overcrowd of members and to maintain quality and to provide justice with equal opportunity to all the boys. Soon a separate shadow boys club will become reality.

This year we experienced a record number of contestants participated for Table Topics and Speech Evaluation Contests that created a need for preliminary rounds of contest before the final one. This is a unique situation we manage appropriately.

The results of club contests, the success at Area Contest and Division achievement are remarkable and the entire credit goes to the respected mentors, contestants and the general members who volunteered for the sake of Serendib. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those committed seniors members, mentors and

others for their dedication, understanding and support. MOHAMED I.M. ZUBAIR

    good flow and was very

    confident. The second

    Speaker TM Jaan, who

    opened the speech vibrantly

to do the CC manuals 4th

    project. He started his speech

    by giving us

    some data

    about the

    number of

    suicide deaths

    in Sri Lanka

    and then

slowly moved to a mini story

about a friend of his and his

    colleague, a calm lady

    teacher. He kept the

    audience captivated and

    curious. It was a marvelous

    speech, quite dramatized. The

    third speaker was TM Farhan

    again from the CC Manuals

    4th project. TM Farhan started

    describing about his native

    area Helboda,

    where he was

    born and

    raised up. He

    spoke about

    the

    breathtaking

    landscapes and a rich cultural

    heritage, the land of Paradise

that Sri Lanka was blessed with.

    He invited the entire members

    and guests to visit these

    places when they travel next

to Sri Lanka. He had a great

    flow and was

    very vibrant.

    The fourth

    speaker TM

    Gihan did the

    4th project

    from the CC manual. Our

    Evaluation champion again

    displayed his great talent in

    speech delivery, where he

    spoke about mistakes and

how we have to learn from

them. He had a great voice,

    great flow and was very

    confident.

    The fifth

    speaker

    was TM

    Fazmy

    whose

    project

was the 3rd speech from the

    ACB manual Story Telling.

    He started to narrate his

    personal story, according to

the criteria in the manual to

    describe about his own

    experience about finding a

    life-partner. He had very good

    humor, voice modulation and

    was very vibrant.

    The sixth and the final

    speaker was TM Thangasamy,

    who was delivering his final

    speech from ACG Manuals

    10th project. TM Thangasamy

    exhibited a live show on

    television, where he explained

    about mail merging

    techniques in Microsoft Word,

    step by step.

    His presentation was

    very smooth and informative.

    The entire

    crowd got

    the easy

    techniques

    of mail

    merging

    and

    everyone showed their

    gratitude for TM Thangasamy

    for bringing in an important

    presentation.

    TM Afdhal was invited

to the lectern by the host to

give a presentation on how to

    prepare speeches from CC4

to CC6. He gave a very useful

    Members Corner

My Experience as a Gavelier (This Article was missed to be published in the Annual Serendib Breeze magazine)

    It has been

    two months

    since I

    joined the

    Serendib

    Girls Gavel

club, It gives me an immense

pleasure to be in this globally

    recognized organization

which has helped more than 4

    million people around the

    world to better their speaking

    and leadership skills and to

emerge as leaders. When I first

joined as a guest I was feeling

a bit nervous, but later after

    getting inducted as a Gavelier

    and started doing Table

    Topics and Prepared

    Speeches I had some

    confidence which I am happy

about. Weeks passed by as a

    Gavelier and the confidence

    in me developed further. I

know as a fact that one day I

can become one of the best

    speakers. This platform will

    help me throughout this

    journey. There are senior

    Gaveliers who are willing to

    help me in my upcoming

    projects. The biggest strength

    are the Gavel counselors from

    the Serendib Toastmaster club,

    whose excellent guidance

    and dedication are of

immense value. I am not here

    because anyone forced me

to, but because I wanted to

    improve my speaking skills and

one day to become a good

    competent and public

    speaker. So far through my

    progress, I have achieved the

    best speaker ribbon and my

    ultimate goal is to become

    the Gavelier of the Year.

    Finally I would like to

    encourage my friends who

are still not Gaveliers to join

    this wonderful club which

    gives us a chance to

    experience speaking in front

    of an audience and to

    develop good leadership skills.
