DISNEY TOUR 2018: Congratulations to all the ensembles that performed in Disney World! There are so many things to say about the trip and people to thank for helping make this opportunity possible for our students. George Austin from The Spectator asked me my thoughts about the trip, the benefits to our children, and who I’d like to thank. I think this said it quite nicely! The benefits of and rewards for a trip of this magnitude for the music department are numerous. 1. Motivation - From the very first time a student picks up an instrument in a 4th grade string or 5th grade band setting, or a student joins one of our choirs, their teachers tell them that one day, if they practice hard and stay dedicated towards their music studies, they will get to represent our school district on one of the biggest stages in the world, performing for people from across the world. It gives the students something to drive them through the challenges of their musical journey. "One day it will be you on that stage!" 2. A performance opportunity like no other - When you perform in Walt Disney World, the Disney Performing Arts staff members tell the students that as performers in Walt Disney World today, you are an honorary cast member and are representing the vision of entertainment that Walt Disney himself had in mind when building his company. There is a sense of pride and duty that comes with that responsibility. All of their training with the SMS, BMS, and SBRHS Music Department's prepares them for that day. So they do not take the stage alone. Every parent supporter, every music teacher they have ever had and Walt Disney himself are with them on that stage. There is truly no other performance experience like it in the world and it becomes a performance that they will remember for a lifetime. Many have come before them, and many will come after them. All of our students that perform with us on that stage have one thing in common; a lifelong memory of the day they performed for Disney! Not to mention the fact that there are people from across the world in Disney World on a daily basis. On that day, they truly performed for the world! 3. Top-Notch Workshops - Disney Performing Arts provides a "behind the curtain" experience for our students. Both providing a vocal and instrumental workshop experience, Disney takes the students backstage and into a film scoring studio setting to deliver a world-class music workshop experience from a top music educator of high stature which results in a recording of the students dubbed to one of Disney's top animated films. Both of our groups got to record the music for a scene from Disney's Animated hit movie "Frozen". No place else in the world is such an experience provided for student musicians. 4. Legacy - The SBRHS as well as the previous SHS Music Departments have provided this opportunity for its students every four years so that every student that comes through the program has this once in a lifetime opportunity. We have been doing it for so long, that many of the parents and chaperones on the trip were once those very students that graced the Disney stage representing our communities. We are no strangers to the Disney Magic and they look forward to our application and phone call every four years. Its known as a Somerset year in Disney World. We are all part of a musical tradition that is one of the essential factors in why we can call ourselves Musictown, USA! "A ton of planning and preparation goes into making a trip of this magnitude possible. I would like to thank the Somerset Friends of Music for their unending support of our musical endeavors, my colleagues and staff members on the trip for helping prepare the students for their performances, the parent chaperones that did whatever was necessary to help make this trip a special and fun experience for the students, Bill Lacey and the entire World Class Vacation family that each year help us plan all of the logistics of this enormous undertaking, the SBRSD, SPS, and SBRHS administration and school committees for their support and understanding of the importance of a performance trip like this to our music education programs, our communities of Somerset and Berkley, Massachusetts as well as the David M. Moraes Music Foundation for supporting and creating a culture in our communities that supports arts education, every music teacher that these students have ever had teach them; a little piece of them was present on that stage in Orlando, and most importantly, for our students and their hard work in preparing for this once in a lifetime performance opportunity...you made all the work that went into this trip worth it." - David M. Marshall, Coordinator of the Fine and Performing Arts, SPS and SBRSD
