What is up with the SBS Board of Directors and these annual elections? Been doing this for 35 years now and it’s that time of year again! WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING NOMINA-TIONS. Our current By-Laws dictate annual elec-tions for the Board of Directors (BOD), which take place at our membership party in De-cember. Each year we elect five to seven new members to the BOD. We are in need of folks with organizational skill sets, business acumen, and knowledge of non-profits, or willing to learn these skills quickly. Loving the blues and being able to work well with people is required, and just makes it fun. Please keep in mind SBS is not a social club! Although it seems we are primarily con-cerned with promoting, attending and plan-ning blues centered events, providing oppor-tunities and PR for local blues musicians, and bringing blues into local schools for a few months of the year, we are much more! SBS is a true Non-Profit Public Benefit Cor-poration, registered with the California Sec-

retary of State and bound by CA Corporations Code, Title 1, Divi-sion 2, Part 2, sections 5110-6910. Our mission is to preserve and promote American Blues Music. We do this through three primary programs: the Gene Cham-bers Musicians Emergency Funds; the Hall Of Fame, and Blues In The Schools. The BOD is in place to make sure we fulfill our mission, and keep our programs running. The BOD is responsible for the growth and management of funding sources and assur-ing we are in compliance with rules and reg-ulations of operating a legal 501 (c) (3) enti-ty. So, if you are a current SBS member and have the skills and desire to join us in mov-ing SBS forward, or you know a member who would qualify, please send your name, contact info and a brief statement about yourself to Cynthia Jaynes at [email protected].

Sacramento Blues Society History Wanted! - By Jan Kelley Call out to ‘old-timers’ who might have newslet-ters, posters, announcements, etc. of the early days in Sacramento blues. We would like a copy to add to our archives.

If you desire to keep your originals, scanned items would be fine!

We are especially interested in stuff from the 1980’s and ‘90’s that relate to the SBS!

Do we have your current e-mail address? - By Linda Mcshane, Membership

This year we are celebrating a milestone - thirty five years of supporting and loving' the Blues in Sacramento! Yes, that is right, our Sacra-mento Blues Society has survived thru the age of Disco, Punk Rock and Reggae fads even a Hip Hop explosion - but the Blues is still here and not just surviving but thriving.

A good example of our thriving is our Blues in the Schools (BITS) program which had one of its best years ever with dozens of young musi-cians having the opportunity to explore their own individual, musical journey as they met with and learned from some of our wonderful local professional Blues musicians. I am still mad that I had to miss the annual BITS show, I hear it was crazy good! In addition to our BITS program continuing its climbing popularity, our Society has been adding new members consistently each month of this year in all membership categories, a trend we hope you will help us continue!

Now if I get started on all of the events our events volunteers have been working on I would run out of space for my comments in this column, please check out the events cal-endar because we are partnering with some wonderful Promoters and Club Owners to bring you killer shows. If you haven't been getting out, get up off that La-Z-Boy recliner and let’s go, call up some friends and support

your local Blues scene.

With all we have going on I am perhaps most proud of our vol-unteers at every level in our Society, from my fellow board members - many of whom put in countless hours to promote and grow our Blues community, to the volun-teers who come out to a show now and then and help us sign up new members or give away gifts for donations, thank you! It is the volunteers who make it happen. I have said it before in this column, going to see your favor-ite band is so much more fun when you share the experience with friends.

This week we are planning for our member ap-preciation party which will be held later in the year and I can tell you, you will not want to miss it, it will be a real "Wang Dang Doo-dle". They will be sure to be talking about this party for some time so mark your calendar and start talking to your friends and neighbors about joining our great Society, after all, with 35 years under our belts we are not just anoth-er fad. Hey, Muddy said it, "The Blues had a baby and the named it rock and roll." It may wax and wane in popularity but the Blues will always be there like a good friend when you need one.

Please see below for a specific and very important volunteer po-sition that we are attempting to fill at this time. If this sounds like you and you can donate the 4 – 6 hours per month and help us out, let us know.

if you wish to volunteer your services. Thank you for helping to keep the Blues alive in Sacra-mento!

The Sacramento Blues Society is an all-volunteer organization. We need YOU to help keep the Blues Alive in Sacramento! We are a 501(c)(3) tax deductible nonprofit organization that de-pends on grants, contributions, and volunteers like you to operate. Board members are also vol-unteers and do not receive compensation for their service

There are several volunteer opportunities. We always need people to help out at events at the Membership and Donor Gifts Tables.

Donor Gifts involves helping to set up and dis-play the gifts available for donation, knowing the minimum donation for each type of gift and collecting the donations.

Membership involves interacting with inter-ested parties by explaining the benefits of

Retooling the Sac Blues’ IBC Competition—by the Board of Directors back we’ve received from musicians and mem-bers, and we’re going to “retool” our IBC com-petition. Starting now, we’ll be planning the IBC competition during the third and fourth quarters, and we’ll schedule the competition to begin ear-ly in the next year. That way, we’ll choose our entrant by the middle of the year, giving the win-ning band or musician a good six months to gather funds for the trip. This means that we will not be holding a compe-tition or sending anyone to represent us at the 2015 IBC. Instead we’ll concentrate on prepar-ing for the 2015 local competition to go to the 2016 Challenge. Please stay tuned for announcements about how, when and where to sign up to participate.

One of the challenges facing any organization is planning and budgeting on a yearly level for the major activities recurring each year. The local competition for a band or musician to represent the Sacramento Blues Society at the Internation-al Blues Challenge held by The Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN is one of those activities. Traditionally, we’ve held the competition for our musician or band entry in the third quarter of the year. Once the finalist is selected, we hold fund-raisers to help cover the band’s costs in getting to Memphis. Because of the timing, it seems like there’s always a rushed scramble for the SBS and the entrant to raise money in time to head to Memphis in January. The Board of Directors has considered the feed-

several Sacramento Area Music Awards (Sammies) including a Crit-ic's Choice Award for Outstanding Guitarist. After several national and international tours with the Chrome Addicts, he left the band to start his own group, Aaron King and the Im-perials. In addition to playing with the Imperials he also toured with world-renowned boogie-woogie pia-nist Mitch Woods playing such pres-tigious festivals as the Montreal Jazz Festival and Umbria Jazz Festi-val. In recent years, King has broad-ened his musical horizons through

his association with highly respected Sacramen-to jazz bassist Harley White, Jr., blurring the lines between blues, jazz, funk, and even hip-hop in an effort to continue pushing the music for-ward in ways his predecessors did decades ear-lier with the electrification of blues- a radical no-tion at the time.

A true product of the Sacramento blues scene, guitarist Aaron King has been an ambassador for Sacra-mento blues around the world showcasing a style that owes as much to jazz guitarists like Herb El-lis and country guitarists like Hank Garland as it does to blues guitar-ists like Albert King and Albert Col-lins. Born and raised in Sacramen-to, King got his first lessons in blues from Sacramento Blues Hall of Famer Johnny "Guitar" Knox. He continued his blues guitar educa-tion under the mentorship of anoth-er Sacramento Blues Hall of Famer, Little Charle Baty, developing a style that would combine blues, jazz, and coun-try guitar. From there he spent his formative years playing guitar for and recording with the late, great pianist Omar Shariff. . Playing with renowned Sacramento jump blues band The Chrome Addicts, King went on to win

Derek Washington—2014 Blues Hall of Fame Inductee

Derek’s interest in music began at the age of four or five years as a radio kid who heard Bill Monroe and the Texas Playboys, Leadbelly, and Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup doing their hits of the day. At age seven he wanted to be a musician and be-gan listening to music differently than before. He played drums and slide trombone in high school and played the 'bone in both the march-ing band and concert band in un-dergraduate school. He was also listening hard and regularly to the blues on WLAC in Nashville, TN.

Playing in school and listening to the blues on radio and at many blues gigs in his former home town sealed his blues fate. Along the way, he added variety - fol-lowing Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Jimmy Smith, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, lots of great Rhythm & Blues artists and countless other mu-sicians.

Derek came to Sacramento in 1972 and his musi-cal interest was strengthened when he joined forces with the founding group of the Sacramen-

to Blues Society. He then served as President, Vice President, Treas-urer, and Parliamentarian. He often was the Master of Ceremonies at SBS functions and states he has “provided my meager skills as a musician for a number of Blues So-ciety benefits to aid in the advance-ment and presentation of the blues”.

Derek began a side career as a ra-dio broadcaster in 1988, with strong emphasis on blues programming with a little jazz added. He spent 12 years at KUOP-FM at the University of the Pacific, in Stockton, hosting "Trackin' the

Blues" and regularly advising the listeners of Blues Society events and featured artists around town. He continued seven years more after the station was absorbed by Capitol Public Radio at KXJZ-FM in Sacramento, but lost his ability to promote the Blues Society and local musicians and shows while there. Derek moved his “Trackin’ the Blues to KVMR-FM in Nevada City, CA seven years ago.

Joe Lev—2014 Blues Hall of Fame Inductee

Music has been the unifying thread in Joe’s life. It has been his full time ca-reer as an adult. And blues has been right at the center of it all. His first blues memory is, from the age of 10 or 12, when his folk-singing parents brought home copy of a rec-ord on Folkways called “Blues with Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee”. It featured the three bluesmen being interviewed by the incomparable Studs Terkel and songs from all of them. He remem-bers Big Bill said “blues is something you live” and Studs said “Charlie Par-ker said if you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn.” Joe didn’t know what “it” was but he wanted “it”, wanted to live “it.” Since then he has strived to be a real one, and says it’s up to his peers and listeners to deter-mine if he has fulfilled his mission. Since age 12, Joe had a long succession of teen-age bands, first were surf bands with progres-sions just like blues. Joe says the Rolling Stones pointed his way to real blues. He was in his first “good band”, Buckwheat, right out of high school. It was definitely blues based, everything from Muddy Waters to Mose Allison. The next 15 years found Joe playing in a succes-sion of funk, rock and country cover bands and

Nevada style show bands. In 1984 he got off the road and started play-ing with anyone that would allow him. This culminated in a nine year relationship with the newly formed Beer Dawgs with Bob Pearce and Steve Wall. Joe left the Beer Dawgs in 1995 and his blues pursuit began in earnest. He booked two ongoing blues jam house band gigs; two a week at the old Torch Club with Mr. Johnny Nugget and one a week in Nevada City with B.B. and the Blue Jays. Soon he was getting the blues rep-ertoire under his belt. All this lead

to a tour with the great Frankie Lee among many other blues gigs. He still plays full time, all sorts of American roots music, but with a strong em-phasis on the blues. He has shared stages and studios with many lo-cal and a few national blues stars, and have been teaching bass and guitar for 15 years. The past five years Joe has been passing on his love of the blues to the many students involved in our Blues in the Schools program through perfor-mances and workshops. He also serves as an artist in residence at Rosemont and West Cam-pus High Schools, passing his skills and love of the blues on to another generation.

Jan Kelley—2014 Blues Hall of Fame Inductee

Jan moved to Sacramento from Portland, OR in March, 1984 and worked for a law firm where one of the lawyers was a singer in a Blues band. He told her about the Sacra-mento Blues Festival in the fall and invited her to attend. She did and became a huge fan of the Blues. The following year, Jan contacted Phil Givant and became one of his devoted volunteers, continuing to volunteer at the Blues Festival each year until its end in 1993. Charles Washington was leading the volun-teers at the time and explained to Jan about the Sacramento Blues Society; she joined the Society and

continued her volunteering for many of its events thru the years. She expanded her knowledge and love of the Blues, going to other shows and volunteering, and be-coming acquainted with the local Blues bands and clubs. Jan started contributing reviews of Blues festivals and other Blues shows for the SBS newsletter “Blue Notes” in 1994, later adding calendar information for events in the region. She has contributed many articles to it over time. In 2010, Jan became co-editor and

Marshal began his singing career at an early age, singing for cook-ies in Shreveport, LA at the local market where his mother shopped. At about age 3, he learned “When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano” from the radio, and sang it over and over as his mother shopped. The shopkeeper was delighted in this small child singing about Ca-pistrano and rewarded him with a cookie. As he requested a cookie every time he went into the shop, the shopkeeper would gather the shoppers and have Marshall sing before he got the cookie. At about 15, he set his sights on a classical career and took vocal lessons to compete in contests. Somewhere along the way, he discovered the blues, and the classical dreams no longer exist-ed. He also began playing the guitar. Enlisting in the Air Force at 18, he sang with The Continen-tals which performed in the “Tops in Blue” show. After his service, he formed a duo and sang in the Los Angeles area.

Jan Kelley—2014 Blues Hall of Fame Inductee—Continued from page

When Jan left the SBS Board in 2003, she learned that the Sierra Blues Society, which encom-passed a large area in the foothills around Sacra-mento, was in need of Board members to keep it a viable organization. She stayed on their Board for three years, but gravitated back to the Sacra-mento Blues Society to help them, becoming a Board member once again in 2011 as Parliamen-tarian, leading to Vice President and eventually President in 2013. During this time, she also so-licited and arranged raffle prizes at events (which contribute to the general fund for SBS), served on various committees and volunteered in different capacities. Jan has given the Blues Community the gift of her leadership skills, knowledge of Blues history, friendly relationships with well-known blues art-ists, charm, skill, and friendliness.

Marshall relocated from the Los An-geles area to Sacramento in the late 1980’s, and got involved in the local music scene while employed by the State of California. Although he had a “day job” his evenings were filled with music. In 1999, he formed the group Marshal Law. This was a very popular local band that represented the Sacramento Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN in 2000. Marshal retired from his day job in 2001 and added more music to his life by attending jams and taking in-vitations to be a guest vocalist. In

2004 he joined, and is still with, the Sacramento Blues Review. When the band Marshal Law dis-banded in 2005 he formed a new band, Smoked Sugar. Two years later he formed a blues trio called Mixed Drinks. The Sacramento Blues Re-vue was nominated for the SAMMIES in the Blues category in 2008, and they brought home the award. Marshall is proud of his vocal participa-tion with the group and of this local recognition.

continues in that function – working tirelessly to produce a blues newsletter the SBS can show-case.

She first became a SBS Board member in 2000 and 2001 as Secretary, all while undergoing treatments for Breast Cancer! At the time, there were only 4 Board members and no other volun-teers. Jan then became President, starting weekly jams at a local club with all local bands, giving away cassettes/CDs to newly joining members, and with the good graces of Willie Brown, built up the membership and interest lev-el for the SBS. Mike Balma had been producing Blues shows that Jan attended, and when he started the se-ries of Heritage Festival concerts, she joined his staff & continued to volunteer at most of his events for several years. She was one of the vol-unteer coordinators for Mike at his shows in the Camp Pollack area.

Blues in the Schools—Lyrics—Continued

Won’t see the sun tomorrow Cause there’s clouds over there The sun won’t be there tomorrow Cause there’s clouds over there I’m headed over to the boss man to see if I can get my share Those drops are starting to come down In that door where I went Those drops are starting to come down In that door were I went That boss lady, she won’t pay me How am I gonna make my rent Thunder done told me, I done made it clear Gonna pick up on my guitar and get on outta here Thunder done told me And the lightening made it clear Gonna pick up on my guitar get my poor self outta here The sky’s gone black now, oh what a dark dark day This here sky has gone black now, oh such a dark dark day Now I’m sittin in this rail yard hoping it’ll all go away 2011 - Rainbow Blues Lyrics – Serrina Johnson, Melody and Arrangement Paris Clayton Lead Vocals – Gary Mendoza Guitar, Vocals – Paris Clayton Drums – Rick Taylor Bass – Leo Boots There’s the music called the blues That lives inside of my head. But give me a choice dear lord And I’ll seek other colors instead. Like how the yellow sun puts a smile on my face. With this rough road I’ve been walking Lord knows I need that grace. Well I’m tired of hearing that life is hard, I got reason to sing the blues but I’m gonna sing me some happy colors to put me in a better mood. There’s the music called the blues

that lives inside my head. But give me a choice dear lord and I’ll sing other colors instead. Happy people with green attitudes really warm my heart. I count you count Is such a positive start Red hot love makes me feel so complete and whole. Life has been hard so making it better Is my number one goal There’s the music called the blues that lives in everyone’s head But give me a choice dear Lord I’ll sing other colors instead. I’m so tired of hearing, of hearing that life is hard. Yeah, I’ve got a reason to sing the blues. I’m gonna’ sing me some happy colors put me in a better mood. Yeah, I’m gonna’ sing me some happy colors to put me in a better mood. 2009 – Life Lyrics – Jason Lynch, Melody and Arrangement - Paris Clayton Lead Vocals – Tessie Marie Honn Guitar, Keyboards, Bass – Paris Clayton Drums – Pat Balcom Life can change by the little things you do. Life can change by not telling the truth. Life can change by doing something dumb or doing something stupid or even having fun. Chorus: Life. Life comes and goes real fast. Life. Life comes and goes like cash. If you ain’t watching it might go right past. Life. You better hold on to it because you might not get a second chance. Life can change by carrying a gun. Life can change no matter where you run. Life can change any day, any time, any minute, any second so you better watch the time. Chorus Con nued Page 10

Blues in the Schools—Lyrics—Continued Life can change by giving and not expecting to receive. Life can change by helping someone in need. Life can change by doing a good deed, feeding someone who’s hungry because everybody has to eat. Chorus 2008 – I’m Having a Bad Day Lyrics – Sareth Roth, Melody and Arrangement – Paris Clayton Lead Vocal, Guitar – Paris Clayton Bass – Dave Channell Drums – Pat Balco I’m having a bad day, I just got fired from my job.

Money’s been taken from me like I just got robbed, I’m having a bad day. My house got broken into and violated, Came home from school, seen my room and nearly fainted, Now I got to clean up and rearrange what’s left, The way I feel right now, I’d rather see death, I’m having a bad day. My grandma passed away, She’s 2,000 miles away and her funerals’ today. I didn’t say enough when she was alive, Now that she’s gone, I feel like I could die. I’m having a bad day. This day has been too long, But I know things will get better So I have to stay strong.
