    WHat is tHisleaRneRWoRKBooK& ReCoRdBooK FoR?

This workbook covers underground coal mines, and

is similar to a Workbook that has been developed

or all other sites. The two Workbooks this one or

underground coal mines, and the other or all other sites

are deliberately similar and have subtle dierences.

The principles involved are the same or all shotring, but

the precautions are stricter or underground coal minesso the practices dier and are constrained in some areas.

The Learner Resources are also similar and are slightly

slimmer than they are or all other sites as a result.

However, or key principle and or career progression

reasons, the Learner Resources and Workbooks are kept

in parallel so that a person can move rom underground

coal mines to other sites, or the other way around, and

take advantage o the progress they have already made.

The delivery o all our Modules in the Shotring course

involves workshops, demonstrations and workplacepractice. Each Learner Workbook helps you to work

through the Learner Resource and complete the

assessment tasks. It can also help you to:

    planyourstudy

    buildyourskillasalearner

    planwaystoapplyandpractisewhat

you learn (use it, or lose it).

Your workplace trainer will guide you through the material

and some o the activities, and will help you develop alearning approach to ensure you can apply your learning.

This Workbook and Record Book helps a Trainer and an

Assessor to develop and assess your required knowledge

    and skill.

    WoRKBooK

Throughout this Workbook there are Review Questions

that will test your knowledge o the subject. There are

also some Learning and Assessment Tasks through the

book that help develop your knowledge and skills. Early

on in this book you will nd a sel-assessment checklist to

help you and your Trainer to determine the areas that you

    will need to develop urther.

    1. MNC04 Coal Training Package

The assessment tasks or Charging Shotholes are

designed to meet the outcomes o the ollowing relevant

    units o competency. They are:

    b. RIIBLA302 Conduct Shotring in

This is urther detailed in another book called the

    Learners Guide.

    COnduCT OF AssessmenT

Your trainer and/or assessor will conrm with you the

assessment process and your readiness or assessment.

A range o evidence will be gathered or the assessment

including written and/or verbal questions, observation and

third party reports, such as rom your supervisor, o you

applying your knowledge. Assessment tasks are provided

    in this Learner Workbook.

    suCCessFul COmPleTIOn OF THe unIT

When you have nished working through this module

and the related activities you will need to demonstratethat you can perorm the assessment tasks and meet the

requirements o the units o competency. Assessment

    o this module consists o a practical demonstration o

the required skills and answers to written/oral knowledge

    questions.

The practical tasks will be similar to the activities that

are included in this Learner Workbook. That is why you

will need to ensure you can perorm the activities in this

Workbook satisactorily. You must practice the activities

until you eel satised that you can perorm them to the

required standard. The activities in this Learner Workbook

    prepare you or assessment.

When you are satised that you can achieve competency

in this module you should ask to be assessed.

    Successully completing the assessment demonstrates

that you have achieved the module o competency

outcomes. I you are unable to provide evidence

that you can apply your learning in a workplace or in

a simulated situation, you can ask your trainer or a

statement regarding your learning that you can use later

as evidencetowards achieving competency when you are

assessed in the workplace or in a simulated situation oryour Unit.

    ReCoGnition oF PRioR

    leaRninG (RPl)

Recognition o Prior Learning is the recognition o

competencies you currently hold. In order to grant

RPL your assessor must be condent that you are

currently competent against the endorsed competency

standards. You can use the Sel Assessment Checklist

at the beginning o the Learner Workbook to assess your

knowledge and skill in charging shotholes with explosives.

I you are condent you can demonstrate competence

    Write / Draw

Beore progressing your learning you might like to use this

sel-assessment checklist to review your knowledge and

skills in critical items o evidence. You can also use the

    checklist to see i you:

    a. have the knowledge and skills to apply or RPL

    b. are ready or assessment at the

    completion o the module

    c. wish to identiy particular areas in which youd

like to concentrate in your urther development.

Please place a tick (3 ) or cross (5 ) in the boxes as

applicable in the areas listed below.

Note: the ollowing comprehensive checklist is the same

or all Modules so it may be a bit daunting - discuss it

with your Trainer or simply tick the topics with which

you now eel comortable, or the areas on which you

eel you need to concentrate. It is in this orm because,

in 2008, the Units o Competency are in a stage o

consolidation and possible transition. The transition has

been anticipated in the Modules. Do not eel that you

have to be competent in every item below at this stage.

By the time you have completed Module 4, you should

have ticked all o the Competency Unit Reerences. These Units o competency are listed in the table below

and relate to a reerence number in the checklist. For

example, in the rst box relating to Design / survey

blasts, the Competency Unit Reerence Number 1(1.1)

reers to RIIBLA202, Element 1.1, and you would nd

useul material to help you, in Modules 1 and 2, while

Competency Unit 2 material will mostly be covered in

Modules 2 and 3, with Competency Unit 3 being covered

in the main by Modules 3 and 4. As a general (and airly

crude) guide, you might ocus on the those areas relating

    to:

    1. in Module 1 - the rst Unit o Competency

    in the list below (RIIBLA202)

    2. in Module 2 parts o the rst two

    Units (RIIBLA202 and 302)

    Activity

Conduct (or develop) a Workplace Inspection o/or a shot

being charged, or about to be charged. Use a workplace

inspection checklist rom your site or use the sample

    below.

A workplace inspection is a bit like a pre-start check

that looks a bit wider than just at a vehicle in the case

    o a vehicle pre-start. A check o the blast location, and

anything that will be aected by the blast is needed. Most

shotrers and operation managers do this automatically,

and would not be able to describe all the checks in

any particular order, so you may not be able to locate

a Workplace Inspection Checklist or this activity (see

the sample included in your Workbook). A workplace

inspection is a structured look at work being done in a

particular area and is a way o looking at what should

be there, not just what is there. It is a way to nd out

what might be improved, not a way to trap people, so

look beyond the obvious and record positive items as

well (make a note o good things being done that are not

included in the checklist). Ask why i you see something

(including anything in the sample below) that appears oddor wrong and add comments in the right-hand column.

    Technical Inormation

You will need to look at:

    1. Your site procedures or Workplace

    Inspections, and locate/drat any particular

    checklists or blasting; or the,

    2. Suggested checklist as shown below.

You might also discuss workplace inspections with your

Trainer, and with your sites saety ocer.

    Write / Draw

Write your observation and comments in the spaces

provided in the checklist; the space provided indicates

that you dont have to write copious amounts o

inormation. However, i there is insucient space use an

    extra sheet o paper.

    Saety

The activities will require you to move around the mine
