I am using the one mentioned above for this article. I hear many times in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous … “I try to practice the “principles” behind the “principles”. The steps are the “principles”. You cannot have “principles” behind “principles”. For example, they say the principle behind Step One is honesty. Don’t I need hon- esty in Step Three, Four, and Five? Does it not say in our literature that this is a program of rig- orous honesty? What about honesty, willing- ness, and open mindedness? Are these not the essentials of recovery? This mis-information about “principles” behind “principles” started in a California AA Conference in 1955. Some well- meaning alcoholics decided to make the “principles” much more difficult. Because this is a simple program for com- plicated people. What is stated in our twelfth step is “…. practice these principles in all our affairs.”. The “12 th Step principles” are: One through three – get right with God Four through seven – get right with yourself Eight through nine – get right with others Ten – stay right with yourself Eleven – stay right with God Twelve – stay right with others The Twelve Steps are the main facts so the Twelve Steps are the principles … simple, powerful, perfect, beautiful. It is October so let’s look at Step Ten. “Continue to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it”. Step Ten states I have entered the world of the Spirit. This is not an abstract idea … this is reality. In Steps One through Nine, I have cleaned up my life and started to heal my soul. Now I continue on the path. In the world of the Spirit I cannot rely on myself. I must rely on God. I will become fearful, anxious, angry, and selfish. And when I do, I pray to my God to remove it at once, call on another alcoholic and then turn my thoughts to help others. This is how I stay right with myself. My life is no longer about being right; it is about being at peace. I have ceased fighting everyone and everything. I get to react sanely and normally to alcohol. I realize what it will do to me instead of what it does for me. In Step Ten I learn I have a daily reprieve. So, the only way for me to stay sober is “one day at a time”. Love and service, Tommy B. 12 th Step Principles AA’s twelve steps are principles for personal recovery. From “the twelve concepts”: Principle – the main fact in particular order to achieve a higher standard.
