André Leon Talley is a writer lauded and published across many genres, the curator of amazing fashion and celebrity events, a charming television and film personality, and an inspiration to all SCAD students, alumni, faculty and sta!.

As contributing editor to Vogue, André Leon Talley regularly pens a witty, pithy column called “Life with André,” and has often helmed special fashion and celebrity projects for the magazine, including “A Celebration of Oscar Fashion,” a retrospective of famous Oscar gowns held during the 79th Academy Awards. Talley has been an integral part of the preeminent fashion magazine for more than 25 years, and prior to that was at Interview magazine during Andy Warhol’s tenure.

Talley is the author of two books, “A.L.T.: A Memoir” and “A.L.T. 365+.” The memoir pays homage to the two extraordinary women who shaped Talley’s life—his grandmother Bennie Frances Davis who raised him, and Diana Vreeland, the legendary style authority who became his mentor. The monograph captures one entire year in Talley’s celebrity-drenched life—complete with photos of Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, the front rows at major fashion shows, and even Good Friday services at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, where Talley is a member and is deeply involved in the life of the church.

Recognized for his amazing eye and insightful and entertaining perspective, Talley regularly appears on television and in film. Among his multitude of media credits is HBO’s “Sex and the City,” and films “The September Issue,” about the making of Vogue’s fall fashion magazine, “Catwalk,” celebrating the rise of the supermodel, and “Valentino: The Last Emperor,” detailing the life of haute couture designer Valentino Garavani. Currently, Talley can be seen on the judges’ panel of The CW’s “America’s Next Top Model.”

In 2003 Talley was honored with the Council of Fashion Designers of America Eugenia Sheppard Award for Excellence in Fashion Journalism, and in 2008, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree by SCAD in recognition of his contributions to the university. Today, in addition to his work at Vogue and his many award-winning style and fashion pursuits, Talley regularly mentors SCAD students and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees.

Diane von Furstenberg first arrived in the fashion world in 1972 with her iconic wrap dress, the seed of what is today a full fashion house. By 1976, the millions of wrap dresses sold had come to symbolize female power and freedom to an entire generation. The e!ect of this garment on women and the fashion industry is so profound that it is now part of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution. In 1997, after a hiatus from fashion, she re-emerged on the New York fashion scene to relaunch the dress that started it all and began transforming her company into the global luxury lifestyle brand it is today.

Headquartered in New York City, there are currently 33 freestanding DVF boutiques worldwide, and DVF collections are also sold in select retail specialty stores in more than 71 countries. As a longtime resident of New York’s Meatpacking District, von Furstenberg is a vocal member of the local community. She opens her studio on a regular basis to host cultural events and is actively involved in the campaign to save and redevelop the historical High Line railway. A firm believer in the power of women, she sits on the board of Vital Voices, a women’s leadership organization that empowers emerging women leaders and social entrepreneurs around the world.

In 2004, she was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from SCAD. In 2005, von Furstenberg was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America for her impact on fashion and one year later, was elected president of the organization, an o"ce she continues to hold.

The dean of the new SCAD School of Fashion, Michael Fink was named to the post in fall 2009. Prior to his appointment at SCAD, he was vice president and women’s fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue, where he was responsible for forecasting women’s seasonal trends as well as analyzing and supporting the women’s fashion and women’s accessories selection for stores nationwide. He also developed private label and branded products, and played a key role in integrating the seasonal fashion message into marketing concepts, advertising, windows and his Saks.com series “Front Row at the Shows.” Fink has toured extensively to lecture on fashion trends. A fashion expert for local, national and international media, Fink has been a frequent commentator on “Full Frontal Fashion,” “The Today Show,” CNN and as a fashion adviser on “The Apprentice.” He has been featured in The International Herald Tribune, USA Today, The New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar, Time Magazine (India) and Marie Claire.

SCAD SCHOOL OF FASHIONSCAD o!ers one of the largest and most comprehensive fashion programs in the United States, with a balanced curriculum of design and construction. Fashion students are encouraged to develop creative and intellectual thinking, inventive design skills, and practical expertise necessary to succeed in careers in the global fashion industry.

The fashion department partners with innovative designers and hosts industry professionals who critique student work, present lectures and lead workshops. Recent visitors include Simon Doonan, Barneys New York creative director; Amy Astley, Teen Vogue editor-in-chief; Anne Slowey, ELLE fashion news director; Kelly Cutrone, fashion PR mogul; Marshal Cohen, author; and designers George Esquivel, Chris Benz, Mark Badgley, James Mischka and Tracy Reese.

Accessories play a vital role in personalizing apparel choices. To prepare for this specialized field, SCAD students learn to conceptualize and design 3-D accessory products as well as execute, present and market their work with a high level of craftsmanship. SCAD is the only university in the world to o!er an M.F.A. in accessory design, and the first in the U.S. to o!er an M.A. in accessory design.

The fashion marketing and management program prepares students for a cross-functional career in a global marketplace comprised of fashion, business and marketing. The core curriculum covers operations, planning, purchasing, advertising, trend forecasting, product promotion, visual design, retailing, sourcing and product development.

Luxury and fashion management addresses the di!erent facets of a fast-paced, constantly evolving industry. Trendspotting, new marketing strategies, brand management, organizational structures, supply chain management, communication and fashion events are covered in this program. SCAD is among the elite in o!ering an M.A. in luxury and fashion management and is the first university to o!er an M.F.A. in this specialized field.

DAVID GOODROWEAssociate dean, Atlanta

David Goodrowe is formerly the Northeast and international regional director for bebe stores, and the former president and owner of the successful high-end women’s luxury designer clothing company David Rodriguez. A member of Fashion Group International and Council of Fashion Designers of America, Goodrowe received the Moet and Chandon Designer Debut Award and the Hispanic Designer of the Year award from MODA.

ANTHONY MILLERChair, Savannah

Anthony Miller began his career as an assistant designer for Rosemary Brantley, then worked for leading high-end retailer Ecru, as a designer for Studio Francese in Milan, Italy, and as corporate design director for Bum International. Miller has chaired the SCAD fashion department since 2005, and under his leadership the department has grown to be the most comprehensive fashion program in the United States.

SARAH COLLINSAssociate chair, Atlanta

Sarah Collins’ expertise and practice explores the social and psychological aspects of fashion. The first fashion faculty member at SCAD Atlanta, Collins has curated several fashion-related exhibitions, including “To a T: Cute or Couture” at the Museum of Design Atlanta, and is a member of Fashion Group International.

Complementing classroom instruction, the SCAD Style Lab mentorship program a!ords students a realistic glimpse of working industry standards, o!ering direction and inspiration for a select group of students’ senior collections. Mentors work with students via one-on-one critiques and provide guidance from concept through production. Past mentors have included New York designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais of Ru"an and international designers Yigal Azrouël and Lars Nilsson. Mentors for 2009-10 are Bryan Bradley and Angel Sanchez in SCAD Atlanta and Catherine Malandrino and Zac Posen in SCAD Savannah.

After apprenticing at several prestigious New York fashion houses, including Calvin Klein, in 1998 Bryan Bradley launched his New York clothing label. Tuleh became the delight of New York’s social set, who were drawn to his use of colorful prints, embellished fabrics, deep necklines and ru#ed hemlines. The line was inspired by author Mary McCarthy’s “Vassar girls” and “all working girls who need to get dressed.” Bradley’s mission is American fashion in the tradition of James Galanos, Pauline Trigère and Bill Blass—a new salon for a new generation. Often hand-dyed, clothes from Tuleh reflect what Bradley calls “the woman in the mirror,” her moods, her ideals and her life. Aerin and Jane Lauder, Marisa Tomei, Chloë Sevigny, Ashley Judd and Cameron Diaz are just a few of Tuleh’s celebrity fans.

BRYAN BRADLEY

Since starting her own label in 2001, Catherine Malandrino has woven together the energy of Manhattan with the romance and elegance of Paris. Born in Grenoble, France, Malandrino began her career in Paris after graduating from Esmod. She worked in the houses of Dorothée Bis, Louis Féraud, Emanuel Ungaro, and in the ’90s was the creative force behind the French label Et Vous.

Malandrino currently designs two collections: her contemporary Catherine Malandrino line and her couture runway line, Malandrino, which features shoes, jewelry, handbags and belts. Malandrino boutiques grace the St. Germain in Paris and can be found in Moscow, Istanbul, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Japan. The Malandrino and Catherine Malandrino collections are also available in select department stores and specialized boutiques worldwide.

CATHERINE MALANDRINO

STYLE LAB

Born and raised in lower Manhattan, designer Zac Posen pursued fashion from an early age, landing a coveted internship when he was 16 at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art under curator Richard Martin. Later, Posen was accepted into the fashion program at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design at the University of the Arts, London.

Upon returning to New York, he was chosen to present a capsule collection as part of GenArt’s “Fresh Face in Fashion 2001.” Posen established his design studio in Tribeca, and in February 2002, the 21-year-old Posen debuted his ready-to-wear collection in New York City. The much-lauded presentation signaled the presence of a new force within international fashion. Posen continues to receive awards and accolades, including Swarovski’s Perry Ellis Award for Womenswear in 2004 by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and the first André Leon Talley New Look Award by SCAD.

ZAC POSEN

Angel Sanchez has been captivated by fashion since spending his childhood surrounded by dress forms and fabrics in his mother’s Venezuelan atelier. But it wasn’t until 1987, after two years as an architect, that Sanchez returned to his fashion design roots. He quickly rose to fame throughout Latin America, and expanded internationally in 1997 when the company headquartered in New York City. In 1999 Sanchez debuted his bridal collection in the U.S. and presented his evening collection during New York Fashion Week in Bryant Park.

Adam Kuehl was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1982. After obtaining a B.F.A. in photography from SCAD in 2005, he began working for the university to produce award-winning lookbooks, national ad campaigns and other special projects.

Although Kuehl photographs a variety of subjects, his work is rooted in landscapes. His series, “Savannah Nights,” has exhibited internationally and gained him inclusion in “25 Under 25: Up-and-Coming American Photographers, Volume II,” as well as Magenta Foundation’s “Flash Forward 2009: Emerging Photographers from Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.” His work has appeared in PDN, Vogue, T: The New York Times Style Magazine and Metropolitan Home, among many others. Kuehl continues to work for the university while pursuing an M.F.A. in photography.

After graduating from the California Institute for the Arts, Kym Canter moved to New York City where she became fashion editor of Vue, the Village Voice’s fashion magazine. After the Voice, Canter served as fashion editor of The Washington Post Magazine covering European and American ready-to-wear collections. Canter has spent the majority of her career working as a freelance fashion stylist for a variety of publications, including Vanity Fair, Dazed & Confused, The New York Times Magazine and InStyle. She was a contributing writer to the Wall Street Journal weekend section, where she wrote the original “Catalog Critic” column. In 2001, Canter became the special projects editor at ELLE magazine. Canter also served as the creative director of J. Mendel where she was responsible for turning the fifth-generation luxury fur company into an international fashion brand.

Eli Schmidt graduated from SCAD in 2001 with a B.F.A. in photography. After his time in Savannah, he moved to New York City to assist photographers Bob Hiemstra, Ondrea Barbe and Michael Thompson. The experience of working on still life, beauty and fashion sets allowed Schmidt to hone his technical skills while also developing an appreciation for the emotional and spontaneous aspects of photography.

Schmidt’s editorial work has been featured internationally in magazines including ZINK, Clear, Oakazine, Noise and The Contributing Editor. His commercial clients include Ralph Lauren, Bloomingdale’s, OAK and Tory Burch.

Jenny Capitain arrived in Paris from Germany in 1978 after graduating from art school in Berlin. While exploring the boutiques and markets on the Left Bank in Paris, Capitain met photographer Helmut Newton and began a collaboration that lasted for more than 10 years, during which she worked with Newton as his favorite model and stylist. Capitain also began consulting for fashion designer Helmut Lang, whose career she helped launch in Paris. Newton introduced Capitain to American Vogue, which led to her becoming part of Anna Wintour’s first editorial team in New York City. She eventually returned to Paris as fashion director of French Vogue, and is now a freelance editor based in New York City.

Runway expert and “America’s Next Top Model” mentor, J. Alexander began his career gracing the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier in New York City. After a modeling stint in Tokyo, Alexander settled in Paris. Since 1991, he has been a preferred contact for casting and coaching runway models for well-known designers, including Valentino, John Galliano, Bill Blass, Alexander McQueen, Chanel and Nina Ricci.

His passion for working with beginning models and his ability to dramatically improve their elegance and movement on the catwalk, combined with his outré sense of style, put him in high demand in the world of fashion and modeling. Alexander’s studio is a frequent stop for television, newspaper and magazine journalists who strive to capture his unique talent and secrets of runway success. He is the author of “Follow the Model: Miss J’s Guide to Unleashing Presence, Poise and Power.” For the past 10 years, Alexander has conducted modeling auditions for the SCAD Fashion Show and has prepared SCAD student models to walk the runway.
