Intended Use This equipment is designed for processing of magnetic tape. Any other application is not considered intended use. ADIC is not liable for damage arising from unauthorized use of the system. The user assumes all risks in this aspect.

Knowledge of safety rules for work on electronic and mechanical systems is required. Only maintenance-trained specialists are allowed to maintain and repair the library.

SafeguardsTo maintain the safeguards, observe the following basic rules for installation, use, and servicing of the Scalar i2000:

• Heed Warnings - Adhere to all warnings on the product and in the operating instructions.

• Follow Instructions - Follow all installation and operating instructions.

• Ventilation - Situate the library so that its location or position provides adequate top and bottom ventilation.

• Heat - Situate the product away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, furnaces, or other heat-producing appliances.

• Power Sources - Connect the library to a power source only of the type specified in the operating instructions or as marked on the product label.

• Power Cord Protection - Route all AC line cords so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against it, paying particular attention to the cord at the power source receptacle, and the point where the cord exits from the product.

• Object and Liquid Entry - Take care to ensure that objects do not fall and liquids are not spilled into the product’s enclosure through openings.

• Servicing - Do not attempt to service the product beyond that described in the operating and installation instructions. All other servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel.

Protective DevicesThe library system is equipped with the following guards:

• Mechanical locks

• Front power indicator switch

• Door interlocks

Mechanical LocksYou can lock the front and back doors of the library, limiting access to those who have a key. Authorized personnel are responsible for the security of the keys.

Front Power Indicator SwitchSwitching off the front power indicator switch removes power from the electronics which causes the picker to stop immediately. This switch also removes power from the drives.

WARNINGTHE FRONT POWER SWITCH FUNCTIONS AS A POWER INTERRUPT ONLY. TO COMPLETELY REMOVE ALL POWER, TURN OFF THE CIRCUT BREAKER ON THE POWER DISTRIBUTION UNIT AND THEN DISCONNECT THE AC LINE CORD FROM THE ELECTRICAL SOURCE.

Door Interlock SwitchesDoor interlock switches detect when the front door has been opened and automatically remove power from the picker.

Access to LibraryThe Scalar i2000 is completely enclosed in a housing. The only access is provided by the front door and back door. The interlock on the front door is active when the library is powered ON.

The housing around the Scalar i2000 serves as a separating guard. It separates the danger area of the Scalar i2000 system from the normal working area.

Injury can occur as a result of expected or unexpected movement of mechanical parts.

Access to the library is permitted only:

• The library has been taken offline and Robotics Enabled has been pressed to the OFF position, and

• The front door has been opened, or

• After switching the front power indicator switch to OFF, or• Disconnecting from the main power source

Mechanical Maintenance When preparing to perform mechanical maintenance, observe the following:

• Location of the escape routes and emergency exits - keep these free of obstacles

• Keep dismounted machine components and other parts safe and inaccessible for unauthorized persons

• Keep the equipment clean during work; clean up carefully afterward

Before and after work, remove and reinstall all safety provisions installed for maintenance, such as:

• Covers

• Hazard alert messages

• Warning signs

• Grounding wires

WARNINGMOVEMENTS OF MECHANICAL PARTS CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. ACCESS TO THIS AREA IS RESTRICTED TO AUTHORIZED PERSONS. PERSONS WHO ARE NOT TRAINED IN THE USE OF THE SYSTEM SHOULD ENTER THE LIBRARY ONLY UNDER SUPERVISION.

CAUTIONThe socket outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.

CAUTIONInterfering with the door interlock safety switches is not advisable.

Clothing must be in agreement with the safety rules.

• Clothing must not have metal fasteners

• Clothing should be close-fitting so that it cannot be caught in moving machine parts

• Button up or roll up your sleeves

• Place the ends of a scarf into the clothing

• For long hair, use a protection that fully covers it

• Take off watch, rings, jewelry, badges, etc.

Wear safety glasses when:

• Using an electric drill

• Working on springs, retaining rings, etc.

• Soldering, working on cables

• Cleaning with chemical agents

• All work that endangers the eyes

When handling heavy components, wear safety shoes.

Working on Live Parts Contact with electrical parts can cause severe or fatal burns and internal injury as the consequence of electrical shock. After contact with live parts, persons often cannot break loose from the part by themselves. A second person must stand near the Main Circuit Breaker to be able to switch it OFF immediately in a hazardous situation.

• Never assume a circuit is without power - always check the circuit.

• When working on AC power components, your work must be supervised by another person.

When performing such work, observe the following:

• Accident prevention rules

• Use only suitable tools and measuring devices in good working condition.

• Check the measuring devices for correct adjustment of measuring ranges.

• Work with one hand only. This can prevent injury to internal organs in case of electrical shock.

• Avoid contact with conducting floors (especially metal) or equipment parts. If necessary, cover the working area with suitable protective rubber mats.

Troubleshooting a LibraryThe following describes how to troubleshoot the library and provides instructions for common service procedures. The remove and replace procedures and the system diagnostic tests are described in other chapters.

How are Problems Reported?The Scalar i2000 has advance problem detection, reporting, and notification. There are many processors within the system that monitor temperatures, voltages, current, and operations throughout the library.

When any unusual reading or operation is detected, a service report and a service ticket is generated:

• If the field replaceable unit (FRU) associated with this problem does not have a service ticket open, the library opens a service ticket for this problem.

• If the problem repeats multiple times, the existing report keeps counting the number of times it is reported.

• If a different problem arises with the same FRU, this new report is also associated with the same ticket.

• If a problem occurs involving a different FRU, a new report and service ticket are opened.

The system organizes all problem reports by ticket (FRU) and all of the individual problems associated with that ticket (the individual reports).

General TroubleshootingTo troubleshoot the library, the first indicator is the main status light on the operator panel:

• If it is solid green, everything is running correctly.

• If it is flashing yellow, a specific system is running in a degraded state.

• If it is flashing red, there is a problem in the library that requires immediate attention.

By touching the appropriate sub-system button on the touch panel, all open tickets associated with that sub-system are displayed. To find out more information, display the reports associated with that ticket and review all sub-system problems to see if any of them may be related.

The Service RoadmapThis section describes, at a high-level, the common actions associated with servicing a library. Where applicable, there are cross-references to more information about completing that specific step.

1 Troubleshoot the problem.

• Use the service wizard to view the applicable service tickets. For more information, see Working with Service Tickets and Reports on page 9.

• Use the library LEDs. Refer to Using the Library LEDs on page 17.

• Use the drive indicators. Refer to Troubleshooting Drive Problems on page 18.

• If you are seeing and/or hearing problems, review the information in Common Service Procedures on page 22.

• Use SNMP traps.

For information on SNMP traps, refer to the AMC User’s Guide.

• Use the available diagnostic tests. The available tests include a self test, drive test, and various robotic system tests. For more information see Running System Commands and Tests on page 27.

2 Once a list of potential problem FRUs is created, see if there are any steps you should take before replacing the FRU. Review the information in General Troubleshooting on page 7.

3 Ask the operator to complete or cancel any jobs in the queue and take the library offline. For information on taking the library offline, refer to Changing the Library State on page 23.

4 If you are replacing a FRU, put the safety sign on the front door and disconnect the ethernet connection from the MCB. Refer to Putting up the Safety Sign on page 8.

5 Replace the FRU by following the procedure in the applicable Remove and Replace chapter. If you need to look up the FRU ID, refer to FRU Listings and FRU IDs on page 189.

6 Verify the library is working correctly by running the applicable system test. If you replaced a mechanical, robotics FRU, calibrate the library first. Refer to Calibrating the Robotics on page 23 and Running System Commands and Tests on page 27.

7 Close the service ticket. Refer to Closing Tickets on page 17.

8 Capture a snapshot of the library state, and e-mail it to [email protected]. Refer to Capturing a Snapshot on page 24.

Putting up the Safety SignBefore you begin work, place the yellow safety sign on the front door of the library. See Figure 1 on page 9. This will indicate to others that you are working in the library and power should not be turned on. This sign is part of the service tool kit.

Logging in with Service PrivilegesWhen you log into the Library Management Console, you will most likely need to log in as service so that you can view access the service information.

If you are starting the Library Management Console (LMC) for the first time, when the LMC begins and you are prompted for your login and password, use the service login and password. Contact the ADIC service department for the service user name and password.

To log-in as service

1 If someone is already logged in, from the Operations menu, select Log Off. When prompted, select Yes.

If you are a remote user, you will need to re-open the Library Management Console.

2 In the Name field of the Scalar i2000 Logon window, enter the service logon name and then enter the service password in the bottom field.

If you do not know the service logon and password, contact the ADIC service department.

Working with Service Tickets and ReportsService tickets are usually the first step in troubleshooting. In most cases, the service ticket will point you to the specific FRU that needs servicing or replacing.

Viewing Service TicketsWhen an error occurs, the Library Management Console system status buttons display that the component is either degraded or failed. You can view either a listing of current problems or the entire library problem history list. When the list is retrieved, you can then view the details of a specific problem.

Note User names and passwords are case sensitive.

To view a service ticket

1 In the Library Management Console, select Tools > Service.

The Service Wizard window is displayed.

2 Choose either Fix Current Problems or See Problem History List.

3 Select the Severity Level.

• High - Only show FAILED and DEGRADED tickets

• Med - Show all open tickets

• Low - Show all open tickets

4 Select the Sub-System.

5 Select OK.

Note You can also select a status indicator on the Library Management Console to view the tickets associated with that sub-system.

Either the Current Problems window or the Problem History List displays.

6 Select one of the following options:

• Details — shows the ticket details for the selected ticket

• Repair — displays the repair help text for the selected ticket

StateThe current state of the ticket: open or closed.

PostedThe date and time that the ticket was generated.

Status GroupThe sub-system that is generating the ticket. The groups consist of the following components:

• Cooling: LMM fans, I/O management unit fans

• Power: Power supplies, PDU, power chassis, fuses

• Robotics: IEX, pivot, reach, all cables, I/E systems, system barcode labels, doors, filters, accessor, Y-axis drive mount, X-axis drive mount, rails, X-axis carriage, Y-axis carriage

• Drives: brick firmware, sleds, cartridges, magazines

• Control: System firmware, MCB, RCU, LMD, LMM, compact flash, operator panel, display panel

• Connectivity: I/O management unit, FCB, SCB, CMB

Closed

If the service ticket has been closed, the date and time the ticket was closed.

SeverityThe severity level of the ticket: good, degraded, or failed.

DuplicatesNumber of times this ticket has been reopened. If a ticket is closed and the identical problem occurs in the system within 24 hours, the ticket is reopened and the duplicate count is incremented. If a ticket has not been reopened, the value is 0.

FRU SNThe serial number of the field replaceable unit. You may be asked for this value when calling for next-level support.

Repair LinkIndicates the name of the online help file that the ticket is related to.

DescriptionThe description area of the ticket describes the specific item that is failing and provides context to the failure. The key words, such as is good or is outside specification provide some of the context. The meaning of these key words is described in Table 1 on page 13.

is good This particular problem has been resolved, either by itself, or through changes that have been made to the system. The accompanying service ticket has most likely automatically been closed by the system. If not, monitor this particular problem to see if it occurs again, otherwise close the service ticket.

has failed The system has determined that a component of the system has failed and needs to be replaced.

was removed The system has determined that a component that was present in the library is now not present. This could be because the component was removed from the system, or the system can no longer detect its presence.

is outside specification

The system has detected that a monitored variable is outside of its warning range. This could be an event that occurred for only a short time, or it could be an event that is continuous. This condition does not necessarily indicate that a component will fail, but this event should be monitored further.

Viewing ReportsThe system generates a report about any problem that has occurred. The Reports panel provides a hierarchical tree display for navigating the report list. Each report relates to a single FRU.

To view a report

1 From the Ticket Details window, expand the node by clicking on it. You may have to expand several nodes to see all of the reports.

has exceeded a threshold

The system has detected that a monitored variable exceeds a critical threshold. This could be an event that occurred for only a short time, or it could be an event that is continuous. This does not necessarily indicate that any component of the system has failed, but this event should be monitored further.

has no power The system has detected that a component does not show that any normal operating voltages or currents are present.

is intermittent The system has determined that an event in the system is intermittent, occurring sometimes, but not at other times. Monitor this event to see if it gets worse or becomes constant.

is inoperable The system has determined that part of a component is inoperable and requires a user adjustment or procedure to be performed.

operation has failed The system has determined that the firmware was attempting an operation, but was unsuccessful at completing the operation. This could be a one-time event or a continuing problem. Monitor the system to determine if this service ticket can be closed or has automatically been closed.

operation was recovered

The system has determined that the firmware was unsuccessful at completing an operation, but re-tried the operation and was successful. This could be a one-time event or a continuing problem. Monitor the system to determine if this service ticket can be closed.

operation was invalid The system has determined that the firmware was attempting to perform an operation that did not make sense. This could be a one-time event or a continuing problem. Monitor the system to determine if this service ticket can be closed.

is open The system has determined that the front door(s) or I/E station door is open or is not completely closed. The door(s) will need to be fully closed, and Robotics Enabled on the front panel of the system will need to be pressed before the system will become fully operational again.

mismatched The library’s serial number reported by the RCU does not match what the MCB has.

has performed failover

Host port failover has occurred.

The expanded view shows three levels of reports. The first level is the head report. The head report displays the report number, the item is generating an error, and the category of the failure. The second level is the report definition of all of the sub-reports attached to the head report. The third level displays the report description for a specific report.

2 Select the report that you want to view and select Details.

The Report Details window displays.

Report IDThis is an automatically generated number that is assigned to every report. The numbers increase sequentially.

PostedIndicates the time the service report was generated.

DuplicatesDuplicate errors are tracked in Duplicates. If there is an open ticket and a report comes in that matches any of the reports in that ticket, the duplicate count in the report detail is incremented. If there are no duplicate reports, the value is 0.

Status GroupRefer to Status Group on page 12.

SeverityDisplays the group (sub-system) status: good, degraded, or failed.

FRU IDYou may be asked for this value when calling for next-level support.

Changing the Library StateThe following describes how to take the library offline, how to put it back online, and how to shut down the library. Note that the shutdown procedure only prepares the library for power off. The shutdown procedure is used in some circumstances when preparing the library for remove and replace procedures.

To change the library state

1 Put the library in the view whose state you want to change. For example, View > Physical.

2 From the Library Management Console, select Operations > Change Mode.

3 Do one of the following:

• Online — To bring the library online, select Online.

This sets the library, within the current view, to the normal host controlling condition. In this mode all the host commands are processed.

• Offline — To take the library offline, select Offline.

This takes the library, within the current view, to an offline state. If the library is a physical library with partitions, all partitions are also taken offline.

• Shutdown — To shutdown the library, select Shutdown.

This allows the operator to properly shutdown the library. All active commands from the host are completed, but no new commands are accepted. This option is available only when a physical library has been selected. All associated partitions are also shutdown.

To recover from Shutdown, power off the library.

Powering off the LibraryPowering off the library is a different procedure from shutting down the library. The shutdown procedure prepares the library for power to be removed from the library.

To power off the library

1 Take the all the drives in the library offline. Refer to Working with Drives on page 29.

2 From the Library Management Console, select Operations > Change Mode. Select Offline.

3 From the Library Management Console, select Operations > Change Mode. Select Shutdown.

4 On the front of the library, press the Power.

Calibrating the RoboticsIf you replaced a mechanical, robotics FRU component, teach the library before testing to see if the component is working properly.

To calibrate the library

1 Ensure no applications are trying to access the library and then take the physical library offline.

For instructions, refer to Changing the Library State on page 23.

2 On the Library Management Console, select Tools > Robotics > Teach.

Note The physical library needs to be oflfline to shutdown the library.

The Teach Test dialog box is displayed. The default choice is Configure.

3 Select Calibrate.

4 Select Start.

Capturing a SnapshotThe Capture Snapshot command allows you to obtain and preserve detailed information about the state of the entire system and email or save the file.

To capture a snapshot remotely

1 Ensure no applications are trying to access the library.

2 If the library is not already, put the library in a physical view (View > Physical).

3 Select Tools > Capture Snapshot.

The Capture Snapshot dialog box is displayed.

4 Select the applicable components:

• All

• Management Control Blade (MCB)

• Robotic Control Unit (RCU)

• All I/O blades

5 Select Send.

6 Do one of the following:

• If you want to email the file, enter the email address for the recipient in Email. All end-of-service snapshots should be sent to [email protected].

• If you want to save the file, enter a filename in Save. Use Browse to specify the file location.

Note Firewall file size limitations may prohibit you from emailing a snapshot. Also, ensure email has been properly configured (Setup > Email Configuration).

Running System Commands and TestsA collection of system commands and tests are available to assist in troubleshooting, testing, and in the general maintenance of the library. Use these when you are troubleshooting a problem and after you are finished replacing a Field Replaceable Unit (FRU), to ensure the system is working correctly before closing the service ticket.

Most of these commands and tests require you to login with a service login and password.

Running the Self TestThe Self Test command checks sensor input, robotic motion, and communications to make sure the system is operational. The self test consists of a predetermined set of tests. Many tests can be performed individually by choosing the appropriate command from the Tools menu.

The self test includes the following tests:

• Communication test — Unavailable at this time.

• Accessor test — Tests moving the accessor to the four corners of the library, as well as to specified locations. For a description of this test, see Testing the Accessor on page 34.

• Picker test — Tests reach, retract, pivot, get, and put. For a description of this test, see Testing the Picker on page 36.

• Scanner test — Tests whether the scanner reads a barcode correctly. For a description of this test, see Testing the Barcode Scanner on page 38.

• I/E Station test — Tests whether the I/E stations lock and unlock properly.

• Tower test — Unavailable at this time.

• Drives test — Unavailable at this time.

To run the self test

1 Take the physical library offline.

For instructions, see Changing the Library State on page 23.

2 Select Service > Self Test.

6 When the test is running, you have the following options:

• Stop Test — Temporarily stops the test.

• Resume — Resumes a test that has been stopped.

Working with DrivesDrives allows you to reset a drive, cycle power to a drive, take a drive on or offline, and identify a drive.

To work with drives

1 Select Tools > Drives.

The Drives dialog box is displayed once the drive information is refreshed. Use the Select Media Type combo box to filter which drives are displayed by drive type.

For each drive you can see:

• Drive state

• Drive type

• Location coordinates

• RAS state

• Drive brick error code

• WWN or SCSI ID

• Step test — The Step Test moves the robotics assembly to a specified number of millimeters to the right, left, up, or down.

• Position to Coordinate test — The Position to Coordinate test moves the accessor to a user-defined location.

To test the accessor

1 Take the physical library offline.

2 Select Service > Robotics > Accessor.

The Accessor Test dialog box is displayed.

3 To run the motion test:

a. Select Motion Test.

b. In Times to run, enter the number of times you want to the test to run.

c. To have the test temporarily stop when an error is detected, select Stop on Error.

d. Select Start. At the end of each self test cycle, the numbers in the Current Cycle, Cycles Passed, and Cycles Failed boxes increment.

e. During the test, you can:

• Select Stop at the bottom of the Accessor Test dialog box to stop the test temporarily.

• To resume the test with the existing parameters, select Resume.

c. If you selected Horizontal, select either Left or Right. If you selected Vertical, select either Up or Down.

d. In Distance, enter the number of millimeters you want the robotics assembly to move. Distances between 1and 100 tenths of a millimeter are possible.

e. Select Start. This test does not support multiple cycles.

f. After the test is run, the test result will display the new coordinates in the Current Position text box.

g. If a failure occurs, it will be reported in Cycles Failed. For more information, see the applicable service ticket.

5 To run the position to coordinate test:

a. Select Position to Coordinate.

b. Enter the coordinates to which you want to move the accessor.

c. Select Start.

d. The Position to Coordinate test does not support multiple cycles. After the test is run, the test result will display the new coordinate in the Current Position text box.

e. If a failure occurs, it will be reported in Cycles Failed. For more information, see the applicable service ticket.

Testing the PickerThe picker rides on the accessor’s Y-axis and is the unit that extends forward in order to grip a cartridge. Picker tests whether the picker properly pivots, reaches, retracts, gets, and puts.

Four tests can be run. Two are motion tests and two are Get/Put tests. Run all tests in succession in order to test the unit thoroughly.

The available tests are as follows:

• Motion

• Reach/Retract

• Pivot

• Get/Put

• Select Cell

• Select Range

To test the picker

The Scanner Test dialog box is displayed.

3 Select Current Location or Position To Coordinate.

Testing the Signals and SensorsUse this test to verify if the library sensors are working correctly. For example, you can compare the Signals and Sensors results with the actual library state.

Teaching the LibraryTeach calibrates and configures the library. Use this command after replacing a component of the library or when you need to update the stored library state.

• Calibrates — The gripper moves to the home position, which is identified as being at X-Y coordinate position 0,0. It then moves to a magazine at the top and a magazine at the bottom on each side of each module, and stores those positions in coordinates relative to the 0,0 position.

• Configures — The gripper moves to each storage magazine, I/E magazine, and drive in the library and stores information about them as part of configuration.

To calibrate or configure the library

1 Take the physical library offline.

For instructions, see Changing the Library State on page 23.

2 Select Tools > Teach.

Updating SoftwareYou can update firmware, software, or microcode for library components by using the Update Software command. You can upload the file to the library through a remote client, or you can load the file directly onto the MCB.

The update file is composed of code updates for one or all of the following components:

• Drive sled firmware

• RCU firmware

• MCB firmware

• I/O blade firmware

• AMC software

After you point the file browser at the file update package, the program deposits the package in a predetermined location in the management control blade (MCB) file structure. The MCB then distributes the various components of the update package to the proper library subcomponents.

Updating the Library Through the Service PortThis section contains instructions for updating software through the service port. For instructions on updating from a remote client, see the Scalar i2000 User’s Guide.

To update software through the service port

1 Download the software from the Customer Service website and place it in an accessible location on your laptop.

2 Set your laptop to the following communication settings

• IP: 10.10.1.100

• Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

• IP Gateway: 10.10.1.1

CAUTIONBefore updating firmware, ensure that there are no tapes mounted in any drives. The library system will lose knowledge of the cartridge home cell in storage and this may create library and host inventory issues.

3 Login to the touch panel of the library as service.

4 Select Setup >Network Configuration and do the following:

a. Disable DHCP

b. Set the following

• IP: 192.168.1.1

6 Connect a cross over ethernet cable from your laptop to the MCB service port.

7 On the laptop, start the LMC. Use the following settings:

• IP address: 10.10.1.1

• Login: service

8 Put the library in a physical view (View > Physical).

9 Select Tools > Update Software.

If not already offline, you are prompted to take the library offline.

10 If you are ready to continue, select Yes.

The Update Software file browser is displayed. The browser window defaults to a search for files with the extension .rpm.

11 Point the file browser at the location where the .rpm file is located.

12 Click Select to load the software.

An .rpm file installer will open and component files in the .rpm package will be directed to the correct library subcomponents. When the update is finished, the system restarts automatically. After the system has restarted, it begins discovering the library components.

13 When the discovery is completed, put the physical library back online. For instructions, refer to Changing the Library State on page 3-23.

14 Select Help > About.

15 Verify that the update version in the About Scalar i2000 window matches the version of software that you just loaded.

16 If you are running remote clients, you will need to update them to match the version of software you just loaded on the library.

Updating Drive Brick FirmwareIt is important to ensure that the library is running the appropriate level of compatible drive brick firmware. When updating the library firmware, consult the library Release Notes to verify the compatible version of drive brick firmware. If you need to update drive brick firmware, use the following procedure.

To update drive brick firmware

1 Go to the Customer Service Web site and order the proper firmware upgrade (FUP) tape

2 Log onto the library as admin or service.

3 Use the View menu to select the partition that includes the drive or drives you want to update.

4 Select Tools > Update Drive Firmware.

You are prompted to take the library offline.

5 Select Yes.

The Update Drive Firmware dialog box is displayed.

6 Select the checkbox of the drive or drives you want to update. You cannot select a drive that is currently loaded.

7 Select Start.

8 At the prompt, insert the FUP tape that contains the firmware into the open I/E station slot indicated.

Note The FUP tape you are using must be labeled with a valid barcode.

Note Do not attempt to update a drive’s firmware with the same firmware version it is currently running. Doing so will result in an error.

9 Select OK.

The library will move the FUP cartridge from the I/E station to each selected drive updating the firmware on each.

Aborting and Errors During Drive Firmware UpdateYou can choose to abort a drive firmware update at any time by selecting Cancel. Be aware, however, that once the move media command is issued, the update operation for the drive currently loaded will continue until finished. The abort will prevent further drives from being updated. The abort does not affect the current drive that is being updated.

Aborting the drive firmware update operation may take more than 20 minutes due to client and server time-out requirements.

If an error occurs during the update operation, the operation will abort. Other drives selected for updating will not be processed. The abort does not affect the current drive that is being updated nor any drives that have already been processed.

This chapter contains step-by-step procedures that describe how to remove and replace drives, cartridges, and media related accessories.

Drive SledThis section describes how to add a new drive sled, replace an existing drive sled, and remove a drive sled from the library.

Adding a Drive Sled The following procedure describers how to add a new drive sled to a library.

Required tools: 2.5 mm hex wrench, Phillips screwdriver

To add a drive sled

1 On the operator panel, press the Robotics Enabled button to turn off power to the picker and return it to the home position.

The power is on to all other components.

2 Open the front door.

Aisle power is disabled.

3 In the lowermost vacant drive location, perform Removing a Magazine on page 55 to make room for the drive addition and then return here.

Note Drives sleds must be added from the bottom-most slot to the top-most slot, starting with the lower drive cluster.

If you are adding more than one drive, it is recommended that you power down the library. Adding multiple drives in rapid succession to a powered up system can cause drive sled firmware download problems. Each drive takes up to 25 minutes to add to a powered up system in order to allow sled firmware download to complete. If new drives are installed into a powered off system, sled firmware download occurs in parallel to all drives that are present at power up."

You may need to remove more than one magazine to create enough space for the drive you are installing.

4 Using a 2.5 mm hex wrench, unscrew the retaining screws (2 screws per plate) that secure the cover plate(s) over the target drive slot.

5 Reinstall the magazines above the new drive position.

6 Close the front door.

The power is on.

7 Open the back door.

The power is on.

8 In the corresponding drive location, using the Phillips screwdriver or your fingers, unscrew the one retaining thumbscrew and remove the corresponding drive cover plate(s).

9 Using the markings on the drive slot, install the drive slowly so the guide rails engage. The installed drives should be flush with no gaps above or below it.

Use the bottom of the empty drive cluster as a guide if you are installing a drive in the Drive 1 or Drive 7 position. If a drive is installed below the slot where you are adding a drive, use the top of the drive below as a guide. For example, if you are adding a drive in Drive 9, use the drive in Drive 8 as a guide.

10 Check to see if the status LED on the back of the drive is on.

If it is not on, the drive is not installed properly.

11 Using the Phillips screwdriver or your fingers, tighten the two retaining thumbscrews.

12 Connect the data cables (FC or SCSI).

13 Close the back door.

The power is on.

2 On the operator panel, press the Robotics Enabled button to turn off power to the picker and return it to the home position.

3 Open the front door.

Aisle power is disabled.

4 If there is a cartridge in the drive, eject it.

5 Open the back door.

The power is on.

6 Disconnect the data cables (FC or SCSI) from the back of the drive.

7 Using the Phillips screwdriver or your fingers, unscrew the two retaining thumbscrews on the drive and remove the drive.

8 To cover the emptied drive slot, install the drive cover plate(s) that were removed when the drive was installed. Using the Phillips screwdriver or your fingers, screw in the one retaining thumbscrew (per plate) and secure the cover plate(s) over the emptied drive slot.

9 Close the back door.

10 From the front of the library, using a 2.5 mm hex wrench, install the front cover plate(s) that were removed during installation over the emptied drive slot (there are two screws per plate).

11 If desired, install magazines into the positions now available over the front cover plate(s).

12 Run the Configure and Calibrate teach test. Refer to Teaching the Library on page 40.

Replacing a Drive SledThe following describes how to remove an existing drive sled and replace it with a new one.

Required tools: Phillips screwdriver

Note When installing a drive into a powered up system, it is recommended that you install one at a time and wait for the drive sled firmware update to complete. If a sled is at the correct version, it will not undergo firmware update. Refer to Table 3 on page 19 for firmware update blink pattern information.

6 Take the X-axis belt off the X-axis belt clamp assembly and pull the belt free from the pulleys.

1 Locate the X-axis belt clamp.

2 Insert three teeth of the X-axis belt into the left side of the clamp and tighten the 2.5 mm screw to secure the belt in place.

3 Wrap the belt around the left pulley then across the frame to the tensioner and back to the right side of the X-axis belt clamp.

5 Secure the belt clamp to the X-axis carriage by installing the two 4 mm screws through the X-axis carriage into the belt clamp.

6 Uncompress the X-axis tensioner. Note that the gap cannot exceed 5 mm.

7 Close the front door.

8 Press Robotics Enabled.

9 Bring the library online.

Do not tighten the rail mounting screws at this time.

3 If the installation included an expansion module:

a. Push the loose middle X-axis rail in the expansion module towards the control module X-axis rail. There should be no gap in the junction between the two rails.

b. Tighten the furthest right 3 mm screw in the expansion module X-axis rail. This will keep the two rails butted together.

c. Using the junction as a middle point, loosen five (5) 3 mm screws on each side of the junction.

d. Insert the ADIC X-axis rail alignment tool into the middle X-axis rail.

e. Position the middle of the X-axis rail alignment tool over the junction point in the rails. If the X-axis rail tool is positioned correctly you should be able gain access to the 3mm screws through the holes in the tool.

f. Tighten the M5 nuts on the X-axis rail alignment tool. This will align the two separate rails to one another.

4 Tighten all of the 3 mm screws on the middle X-axis rail.

5 Loosen the M5 nuts on the X-axis rail alignment tool and remove the tool from the middle X-axis rail.

6 Manually move the accessor over the junction points to verify that you can not feel the junction.

There may be a slight clunk sound as you pass over the junctions but you should not feel it in the accessor.

7 When aligned, tighten the left screw, then slide the accessor back and forth, testing to see if there is any binding.

8 Close the front door.

The power is on.

9 On the operator panel, press Robotics Enabled to enable the picker.

4 Uncompress the Y-axis tensioner and remove the spring load screw. Ensure the gap in the tensioner does not exceed 5 mm.

g. Remove the Y-axis chain and trough.

h. Locate where the X-axis carriage meets the Y-axis rail. Remove the Y-axis rail from the X-axis carriage by removing the five 4 mm screws that secure it.

i. Pull the Y-axis rail straight towards you, off of the alignment pin, and remove it.

b. Locate the Y-axis belt clamp on the Y-axis bearing.

c. Insert three teeth of the Y-axis belt into the bottom portion of the clamp. Tighten the 2.5 mm screw for the lower part of the clamp to secure the belt in place.

d. Wrap the belt around the bottom pulley and feed it through the top tensioner and back to the top of the Y-axis belt clamp.

e. Insert three teeth into the top portion of the clamp and tighten the top 2.5 mm screw to secure the belt in place.

5 Uncompress the Y-axis tensioner. Ensure the gap in the tensioner does not exceed 5 mm.

6 Install the picker:

a. Place the picker assembly on the two pins on the x-axis carriage.

11 On the right side of the drive cluster is the CPC board. Remove the fourteen 2.5 mm screws that secure the card to the drive cluster.

12 Remove the CPC board by lifting it straight off of the drive cluster (and the four standoffs that position it).

Removing and Replacing ExteriorComponents

This chapter contains step-by-step procedures that describe how to remove and replace Scalar i2000 library exterior components, which include the air filters, side cover, front door components, back door, and operator panel and related user interface components.

Air FiltersThere are two air filters in each control module and expansion module, located at the top and bottom of the front door. This section describes how to remove, replace, and clean air filters.

Cleaning Air FiltersThere are many factors that influence the need to regularly service the air filters. For example, the total number of tape drives and the operating environment will greatly affect the rate at which debris accumulates in the air filters.

With the maximum number of tape drives operating in a normal data center environment, the filters should be checked every two years. If dust and debris are visible on the inlet side of the filter, use water and a mild soap to clean the air filters. The materials in the filter should last the life of the product, however, if abnormal contamination occurs replacement filters are available.

Removing an Air Filter Required tools: None

To remove an air filter

1 Take the library offline.

Refer to Changing the Library State on page 23 for instruction on how to take the library offline.

2 On the operator panel, press Robotics Enabled to turn off power to the picker and return it to the home position.

The power is on to all other components.

3 Open the front door.

Aisle power is disabled.

4 Unscrew the two retaining thumbscrews.

5 Remove the air filter.

4 From the rear of the library, remove the three 2.5 mm screws that secure the side cover.

5 Lift the side cover straight off the library.

Front Door ComponentsThis section describes how to remove and replace front door components, which include the I/E lock assembly, front door damper, front door, and door interlock switch.

I/E Lock AssemblyThis section describes how to remove, replace, and adjust the I/E lock assembly. The IE lock assembly contains the I/E station lock sensor and I/E station lock solenoid.

Removing the I/E Lock AssemblyRequired tools: 2.5 mm hex wrench

To remove an I/E lock assembly

1 Take the library offline.

Adjusting the I/E Lock AssemblyRequired tools: 2.5 mm hex wrench

To adjust the I/E lock assembly

1 On the operator panel, press Robotics Enabled to turn off power to the picker and return it to the home position.

The power is on to all other components.

2 Open the front door.

Aisle power is disabled.

3 Make sure the door of the I/E station you are working on is closed.

Manually move the I/E lock assembly flag up and down and check to see if the solenoid shaft is rubbing on the inside of the I/E station bushing. If the shaft is rubbing against the bushing, perform the following:

a. Using the 2.5 mm hex wrench, loosen the four lock assembly mounting screws and rotate the whole assembly slightly while manually moving the flag up and down to make sure that the shaft is not rubbing on the inside of the bushing.

b. Tighten the screws. Perform the next step if the problem persists.

c. Loosen the two solenoid mounting screws and rotate the solenoid slightly while manually moving the flag up and down to make sure that the shaft is not rubbing on the inside of the bushing. Tighten the screws.

4 Close the front door.

5 Open and close the I/E station door five times to make sure that the I/E station lock assembly is working properly.

6 Repeat the adjustment procedure if necessary.

Front Door DamperThis section describes how to remove and replace a front door damper. Use the following procedures to remove and replace both the top and bottom front door dampers.

Removing a Front Door DamperRequired tools: None

To remove a front door damper

1 On the operator panel, press Robotics Enabled to turn off power to the picker and return it to the home position.

The power is on to all other components.

2 Open the front door.

Removing a Front DoorRequired tools: #2 Phillips screwdriver, 2.5 mm hex wrench

To remove a front door

1 Do one of the following:

• If the door includes an operator panel or I/E station, power down the library. Refer to Powering off the Library on page 23 for more information.

• If the door does not include an operator panel or I/E station, on the operator panel, press Robotics Enabled to turn off power to the picker and return it to the home position. The power is on to all other components.

2 Open the front door.

Aisle power is disabled.

3 Unload all cartridges on the door. If this is not a control module door, go to step 7

4 If this is a Control Module door, remove the eight magazines from the upper left corner of the door (2 left columns by top 4 rows).

5 Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the 3 screws that secure the operator panel cover and then remove the cover.

6 Disconnect the touch screen display cable (W22) and the indicator panel cable (W20). Pull the cables through the door to the inside side of the library.

7 If the door includes an I/E station, disconnect the I/E station cable (W6). If this is a control module, then cut the two wire ties that hold the cables vertically along the left side of the I/E station.

8 Remove the two 2.5 mm button head screws that secure the flex cable bracket and then remove the bracket (with the cables attached).

9 Unsnap the top and bottom door dampers at the door, leaving the dampers attached to the library frame.

10 Holding both sides of the door, lift it off of the hinges.

Replacing a Front DoorPerform the remove procedure in the reverse order.

Door Interlock Switch This section describes how to remove and replace the door interlock switch. Use the following procedures for removing and replacing the door interlock switch on any library module.

Removing the Door Interlock SwitchRequired tools: None

To remove the door interlock switch

1 Shutdown the library, but do not power it off.

Refer to Changing the Library State on page 23 for more information.

2 Open the back door.

The power is on.

3 On the PDU, set the switch labeled Power to the down (0) position to turn power off.

4 Open the door of the module where the switch is located.

5 Remove the switch from the bracket by unsnapping it out of the bracket.

6 Disconnect the door interlock cable (W15) spade connectors to the switch.

1 Power off the library.

2 Open the front door of the module.

3 Disconnect cable W6 from the I/E station lock assembly.

4 Using the 2.5 mm hex wrench, attach the I/E station to the door using the six screws provided.

Operator Panel/User Interface ComponentsThis section describes how to remove and replace the operator panel/user interface components, which include the touch screen and the operator panel indicators.

Removing the Touch ScreenRequired tools: 7 mm nut driver and #2 Phillips screwdriver

To remove the operator panel

1 Power off the library.

Refer to Powering off the Library on page 23 for more information about how to power off the library.

2 Open the front door.

Aisle power is disabled.

3 Attach the ESD strap to your wrist and to the right of the right-most bracket on the middle x-axis rail.

4 On the inside of the front door (rack 2), remove the magazines from columns 1 and 2, sections 1 through 4.

Refer to Removing a Magazine on page 55 for information about how to remove a magazine. For information about how to determine the magazine locations, refer to Slot Numbering on page 217.

5 Using the #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the three pan head screws and remove the display cover.

Be careful when removing the last screw so that the display cover does not fall off the front door.

6 Disconnect the display cable (W22) to the operator panel.

7 Using the 7 mm nut driver, remove the four screws securing the touch screen.

8 Remove the touch screen.

Replacing the Touch ScreenPerform the remove procedure in the reverse order. When finished, power cycle the library to bring it online again. For more information, refer to Changing the Library State on page 3-23.

After replacing the touch screen, you may have to re-calibrate it. For more information, refer to Calibrating the Touch Screen on page 176.

Calibrating the Touch ScreenYou need to calibrate the touch screen when it is out of synchronization. This can be caused by a corrupted compact flash on the MCB. If the touch screen appears off-center, it is out of synchronization.

Required tools: Ethernet connection to the MCB

To calibrate the MCB

1 Connect the ethernet port of the MCB to the host/network.

2 Start the telnet session with MCB (telnet “ip of library”).

3 Set the laptop to the following communication settings:

• IP: 10.10.1.100

• Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0

• Gateway: 10.10.1.1

4 Run telnet 10.10.1.15 Run ps -ef | grep startlmserver.sh

Note the process id (pid) of the startlmserver.sh, it is the number in the 2nd column.

Note Ensure the calibration target on the magazine gets placed in the correct position.

6 Run kill -9 <pid> where <pid> is the number noted in Step 5.

7 Run killall -9 java to be sure that all java processes are stopped.

8 Run /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 & to start X.

9 Run sh calibrate.sh to bring up the calibration utility.

10 Follow the directions on the touch screen.

X will restart itself.

11 Verify that “X” on the touch screen correctly follows your finger when touching the screen. If not, rerun sh calibrate.sh

12 Run ps -ef | grep XFree86 and note the pid.

13 Run kill -9 <pid> where the <pid> is the number noted in Step 12

14 Run /etc/init.d/xfree86 start to restart X and the LMC.

15 Run exit to end the telnet session.

Removing the Operator Panel IndicatorsRequired tools: 7 mm nut driver and #2 Phillips screwdriver

To remove the operator panel indicators

1 Take the library offline.

Refer to Changing the Library State on page 23 for more information.

2 On the operator panel, press Robotics Enabled to turn off power to the picker and return it to the home position.

3 Open the back door.

The power is on.

4 Open the front door.

Aisle power is disabled.

5 Attach the ESD strap to your wrist and to the right of the right-most bracket on the middle X-axis rail.

Slot NumberingThe library contains, in addition to any tape drives installed, cartridge storage cells in all racks. Storage cells can be located in a CM, an EM, or an I/E Station. In referencing a storage cell, the library displays its element address and physical coordinates. Each column has 10 sections and each section contains multiple rows.

• Drives — Number can be from 1 to 12, counting from the bottom to the top of the module.

• The Column is counted from left to right and can be from 1 to 4.

• The Row number within each Section (magazine) is counted from top to bottom and its range is from 1 to 6 (for LTO media).
