SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN TOUR

9 – 17 MAY 2017

ITINERARY Not many countries can claim to be the home of modern design, but Sweden and Denmark are two countries in which design is absolutely inherent to their culture and way of living. Their vintage antiques are as famous as their contemporary product and textile design, which makes for a rich tradition in art, craft and design.

This small group tour follows our first Scandinavian Tour in 2014, which was a great success. It is designed with a focus on Stockholm and Copenhagen as key Scandinavian design centres where we can explore a variety of artistic and cultural activities.

A special feature of this tour includes private tours conducted by design curators such as Marie Louise Munter, from Miss Design Says in Copenhagen. The personal and professional expertise from our team on the ground adds a unique opportunity for us to explore and understand Scandinavian life and design.

We travel by first class train through the countryside to discover these wonderful cities that offer an exciting array of museums, galleries, design studios showrooms and boutiques for us to enjoy and experience. The beauty of Scandinavian design, its people, culture, cities and countryside are truly unique and well worth ticking off your bucket list!

SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN TOUR 9 – 17 MAY

STOCKHOLM, the capital of Sweden, is also known as the capital of Scandinavia. One of the most beautiful cities of Europe, it is surrounded by magnificent scenery with vast green areas and clean waterways. Stockholm’s tradition and culture marries beautifully with the modernity and progressiveness of its inhabitants. The city spreads out over 14 islands in Lake Mälaren and looks to the Baltic Sea to the east. Her grand public buildings, palaces, rich cultural history and museums evoke her 700 year-old histories beautifully. From fashion and design to food and new technology, the city offers a unique quality of life, making it the happiest city in the world. Arrive in Stockholm and settle into your hotel room at the Nordic C Hotel, before our Welcome Dinner.

NORDIC C HOTEL

Our home in Stockholm is a modern design hotel located in the centre of the city, within walking distance of all major attractions and transport hubs. Through its minimalist elegance and simplicity, Nordic C offers a calm, relaxing environment for busy souls. The welcoming reception area has a stunning waterfall lighting system, elegant circular staircase and attractive golden wall feature. Each bedroom is decorated with huge photographs of Stockholm by well-known photographers including Gunnar Smoliansky, Dawid, Bruno EHRs and His Hammarskiöld. The Hotel has a gym and provides a healthy organic breakfast daily and is home to the first Ice Bar ever created in Scandinavia.

WELCOME DINNER

Fem Sma Hus is located in the northeast area of Gamla Stan (the Old Town) just south of the Royal Palace. Its name refers to the five small town houses under which it was built in 1651. One of the most charming restaurants in Stockholm, it consists of nine vaulted cellar rooms, decorated with tapestries, paintings and glowing candles. The menu consists of traditional Swedish cuisine with a French twist, using local produce, such as chanterelles, herring, salmon, cloudberries, elk and reindeer.

SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN TOUR 9 – 17 MAY

Breakfast at leisure

CITY TOUR OF STOCKHOLM Our panoramic tour will cover all the main points of interest in the city, highlighting its fabulous location with shimmering waterways, crisscrossed by the many bridges for which Stockholm is famous. Points of interest t o b e seen during the tour include City Hall, Hötorget and Sergels Plaza, the beautiful district of the Royal Park, Djurgården and the amusement and cultural park, Skansen - a favourite with locals and visitors alike. Across the bridge, on the southern shore of Saltsjön, the view of the city from Fjällgatan makes for a beautiful photograph. A walk through Gamla Stan, the beautiful old island city, full of interesting design boutiques, gives us a fascinating understanding of the history of this charming city.

LUNCH AT CITY HALL

Our tour ends at City Hall on the island of Kungsholmen. One of the finest examples of modern architecture in Europe, it was designed by Ragnar Ostberg and completed in 1923. A lofty square tower bearing three gilt crowns, the symbol of Sweden, and the national coat of arms, dominates the red brick structure. The Blue Hall is used for banquets and other festive occasions, including the Nobel Prize Banquet in December each year. About 18 million pieces of gold and coloured glass mosaics cover the walls of the Golden Hall and the southern gallery contains murals by Prince Eugen, the painter prince. After a buffet lunch at Ragnar’s Skafferi, we return to the hotel where you can enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure for shopping or visiting the Abba Museum.

DRINKS A T I C E BAR Our evening starts at the famous Ice Bar in our Hotel. Cosy hooded coats are provided for everyone, for this new experience of the Nordic winter and its delightful icy drinks and fascinating interior glacial design features.
