Preface

This user manual was created by Joseph Sadlier,

Ruth Nugent and Gerard McKenna for the Problem

Based Learning (SSPL4004) module in October

2015.

The manual was created to assist a beginner with

the ScanStation2 to competently operate a range of

functions during a field survey.

Any difficulties encountered with the Cyclone 9.0

software were successfully overcome.

2 Measuring Scanner Height

Measuring Scanner Height

Step 1: Get the height of the instrument

(and the targets) as the Cyclone software

requires this. (The laptop used in the

operation of the scanner must have cyclone

software installed or borrowed.)

(Note: Unlock the scanner now.)

Step 2: Firstly, connect the power cable (the

black cable, note the red dots must line up)

to the scanner to the nearest power outlet

(plug). Connect the laptop to the scanner

using the Ethernet cable (the yellow cable).

Step 3: Launch the Cyclone 9.0 software on

the laptop; this opens the Cyclone Viewer

Navigator window. To borrow a license, click

“Help” and then “Borrow/Return license”.

(Note: The laptop must be connected to the

DIT network.)

Step 4: After the licence is borrowed, then

connect the Ethernet cable to the scanner.

The laptops IP address must be similar to

the scanners IP for this to work. To do this:

Control Panel → Network and Sharing →

Local Area Connection → Properties →

Internet Protocol Version 4 → Properties:

Step 5: In the Cyclone View Navigator

window click the “Configure” button and

click “Databases”. Add and name the

database.

Step 6: Click the Configure button, then

“scanners”, then “add scanner” and enter

the IP address of scanner (10.1.196.8).

In the Cyclone View Navigator window

expand the Scanner folder and double click

on the appropriate scanner (ScanStation2),

this opens the Scan Control page.

Step 7: In the ribbon, click “Scanner” and

then click connect (this will connect scanner

and laptop).

In the Scanner Control Panel click “Project

Setup”, then click “Select Project” and click

the appropriate project (this is in the

Database that was created/named earlier).

You are now ready to scan!

Step 8: In the side bar (on the right) under

“Project Setup” insert the scanner height

and ID (e.g.: Station1).

Under the “Field of View” ribbon in “Presets”

select a scan area (e.g.: 360x40). Then click

“Image” at the bottom of the sidebar. (View

the estimated remaining time underneath

the “Image” button.)

Step 9: Fence of target in the image created

in Step 8, right click on screen and select

“Acquire Targets”. In the window that opens

choose (top left), then select the

specific target (e.g. HDS Target from fence).

Once the target is scanned and correctly

labelled select to save the target. Repeat

these steps for all targets.

Step 10: The scanner is now ready to

scan, start scanning by clicking the

“Scan” button in the bottom right-hand

corner.

(Note: the scan density can be

adjusted in back in Presets.)

Step 11: How to colour code the

scans: In model view select “View”

then “View object as” and then “Apply

To” select “Point Cloud”. Click “Colour

Map” and change “Mode” to “Image

Texture Map”.

Step 12: How to register the scans:

Select your database in the Navigator

window and click “Create registration” and

name it. Double click the named

registration.

Add the two or more scanworlds to be

registered. To view the two separate scans,

double click the scanworlds.

Click “Constraints” and then click “Add Auto

Constraints”.

Click “Registration” in the ribbon above and

select “Create Scanworld/Registration”.

Next select “Cloud Constraint” and select

“Cloud Constraint Wizard” then select all

and update.

The scans are now registered and can be

exported.

Step 13: How to export your data: Firstly, go

back to the ModelSpace window. Click

“Selection” and then click “Select All”.

Next, click “File” in the ribbon above and

select “Export” and finally, select “Text PTX

Format (*.ptx)”.
