Warm Summer Thoughts for Winter

As the temperatures here this month continue to drop, I find myself thinking of (perhaps longing for?) summer and all its attendant beauty: the luxury of a more relaxed pace of life, the need to wear just a light jacket and the ability to spend time outdoors with great abandon. Over the last five years, however, my summers bring with them a newfound pleasure: two weeks serving on the faculty of URJ Camp Crane Lake in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

I must admit I was hesitant at first. As a child myself, I barely had any overnight camp experience. I wondered how I would fit in with campers, counselors and even faculty members who had practically grown up at these camps. I knew they often raved about their experiences, but I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect or what my role could be in this kind of setting. To my great delight, what I found there was not just a summertime haven where kids could play sports, dance, sing, paint, or swim, but a true community. This particular community invited its members in to learn more about themselves as individuals. It encouraged them to try new things, to build meaningful relationships, and to explore Jewish values not only by speaking about them but by living them each day. It created the space for them to sanctify time using traditional and contemporary Jewish rituals. And--most importantly--it taught them how to care for one another. While I must say that at the end of two weeks at camp, I am exhausted, I am also invigorated by the sense that so many of our children are engaged in a Jewish community so deeply. URJ summer camps are environments filled with joy and with the hope that our children will carry on our Jewish heritage, albeit in the ways that are meaningful to them in their generation. I share my story with you for two reasons. First, if you are thinking about summer camp for a child or grandchild in your family, of course, Rabbi Brown, Rabbi Glickman and I would encourage you to try out one of our URJ camps (While I serve at Crane Lake, Rabbi Brown spends time at Camp Eisner and the URJ runs a third camp in Massachusetts that focuses on science and technology with a Jewish slant: Six Points Sci Tech Academy). We are always available to answer questions or to put you in touch with the people who can give you more information. There are definitely spaces for campers this summer.

Second, I wonder what those of us whose kids may have long outgrown summer camp can learn from what happens there. At the end of camp I am often left reflecting on how well I do during the year at fully engaging in Jewish life myself and at helping to foster engagement in our congregation. What combination of worship, study, healing the world, and ritual feels right to me? What practices do I offer others to help them grow spiritually? With how much consistency do I let Jewish values guide my choices? How can my own individual Jewish practice bring more joy into my life? These are questions we can all ask ourselves. The intensive Jewish camp experience reminds us never to stop experimenting, reflecting and questioning, never to let our Jewish practice grow stale or move too far into the periphery of our lives. May we all find warmth in the exploration of Jewish life and may it always bring us meaning and joy. Cantor Chanin Becker

New Direction for the United Interfaith Food Bank VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The United Interfaith Food Bank (UIFB) is a cooperative of houses of worship in southern Westchester which has been helping to feed the hungry since 2004. The UIFB is thrilled to be entering a new phase in 2018, partnering with the Food Bank for Westchester and with Family Services of Westchester to provide food to low-income families in White Plains. To learn more, visit our website, www.sstte.org, and type UIFB in the search bar. Volunteers are needed:

• Thursday afternoons (once or twice a month) to help unload deliveries from the Food Bank for Westchester.

• Thursday afternoons OR Friday mornings to sort and pack individual family food bags for delivery to the Head Start children

• Fridays before 2:00 p.m. to deliver food bags to White Plains.

This is NOT a commitment to every delivery - or to any delivery. We are just trying to identify a pool of volunteers to help with these crucial tasks in helping to prevent Head Start students and their families in White Plains from going hungry.

To volunteer, please email Karen Chapro and Larry Eidelberg at [email protected].

Keep an eye out for flyers and emails promoting these upcoming events for your kids!

OUR DIRECTORS OF EARLY CHILDHOOD AND CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING

11

January was a great month! Our Spring Toddlers and January 2’s began on January 2nd. The children already seem comfortable with their teachers, their new friends and their classroom routines. The children are following directions, seeking a friend’s hand as they walk, turning to their teachers for comfort and enjoying their time with classmates. The children are just adorable and have their own special way of spreading joy.

We’re already making plans for this June’s Mini-Camp. Mini-Camp is an exciting camp-like experience for preschoolers. The children will have a variety of activity periods each day such as cooking, sports and games, music, nature, creative movement, carnival, puppet shows, science, and

more!! Our Mini-Camp program will be in session Monday through Friday - May 29th through June 20th. For those children currently enrolled in Mazel Tots, the Mini-Camp program is already built into their schedule so there is no need to register. For anyone else interested, please call for more information. Following Mini-Camp we have our wonderful summer program- Summer Stars. Summer Stars is a seven week camp experience that runs from June 25-August 10. Children ages 18 months to 5 years old are engaged in activities such as sports, music, art and daily water play. We also have a special day each week focusing on a theme such as Circus Day, Hawaiian Day or Carnival Day. At Summer Stars we strive to foster friendships and encourage children to continue to grow socially, emotionally and intellectually as they engage in new stimulating summer activities. Just a reminder, if you have not yet seen our school or summer program and are interested in a space for next year, registration is now open and spaces are filling quickly! Please call to arrange a visit. If you have any other questions about Mazel Tots, feel free to call the Early Childhood Program Office at 914-723-3001. I look forward to talking with you! Jody Glassman, Director

The Future of Israel Education Each year the Westchester Association of Temple Educators (WATE) offers a dedicated day of learning (a Kallah) for all of its members’ supplementary school teachers (aka Religious Schools). It is a highly anticipated program as it is well-regarded as a positive opportunity for our teachers to shmooze, network, learn, and bring something back to their respective synagogues.

At last year’s WATE Kallah one of the presenters from the Jewish Education Project (JEP) introduced the learners to a new way of engaging with Israel education in our supplementary

school system. In partnership with Makom, the educational lab of the Jewish Agency for Israel, JEP launched an innovative and groundbreaking fellowship to help educators deeply engage in the work of “Hugging and Wrestling with Israel and the Jewish People”. Educators from across the NY metro area were invited to apply to this fellowship and one of our faculty members, Monica Gordon, was accepted into Cohort Aleph! Monica Gordon, a congregant and our 7th Grade teacher, is in the middle of her fellowship year and is poised to bring new, creative, and meaningful Israel education methods to our fine synagogue.

Inspired by Monica and the good work of the JEP, I applied to this fellowship and am proud to announce that I was accepted into its Cohort Bet. A significant part of this fellowship is an intensive trip to Israel where the pillars of this “hugging and wrestling” will be researched and examined in real life. I will be heading to Israel this month and am eager to return with new ideas and ways to stretch our congregation vis a vis Israel education.

As an aside, this year’s WATE Kallah is happening right here at Scarsdale Synagogue on Sunday, February 4th! The theme of the kallah is Israel and it is going to be an incredible day for all participants (including all of our Religious School faculty). As there will be no school that day, we are running an “All-school Shabbat Morning Family Program” on Saturday February 3, starting at 9:30 a.m. Designed for all students - and their parents - Kindergarten through Grade 7 it is going to be an enjoyable morning filled with learning, fun, praying, and connecting with old and new friends. We hope to see you there!

Together we grow, Rabbi Ilyse Glickman

Shir Shabbat and Green Shabbat FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 8:00 P.M. Our extra-musical service, which emphasizes melody over the spoken word, includes instruments that will enhance and invigorate the musical experience. Familiar and new melodies offer a new take on our liturgy and aim to create an enriching Shabbat experience.

During services, Rabbi Brown will be speak to the connection between environmentalism and Judaism. And our oneg is going to be Zero Waste!

What zero waste is: A zero-waste event is an event where no waste – or very little – is generated. This is done by having everything that is brought to the event be either reusable, recyclable or compostable.

How to have a zero-waste event: We are going to be adding a “compost” bin to our normal setup of trash and recycling bins, in order to collect any food scraps and compostable serve ware products. Our green Shabbat will have all reusable, recyclable or compostable serve ware so that we will have no waste, and any waste we do have will be recycled or composted into soil!

Why we are doing this: Education, Changing our habits to be more sustainable, Waste reduction. All trash from Westchester goes to an incinerator in just 30 minutes north of here in Peekskill. When items such as food scraps are burned we lose a valuable resource. Even more important than the waste reduction though is changing how we think about waste. Our waste is often not trash but a resource that can be reused or recycled in a beneficial way.

Why this a Jewish value: Caring for our planet - the only home we have - is a Jewish imperative throughout our texts and prayers. A famous Midrash explains:

“When God created the first human beings, God led them around the Garden of Eden and said: “Look at my works! See how beautiful they are—how excellent! For your sake I created them all. See to it that you do not spoil and destroy My world; for if you do, there will be no one else to repair it.” (Midrash Kohelet Rabbah, 1)

Embarking on a Green Shabbat is one small way we are bringing these values!

Donations to GradBag As part of this green initiative, we will be collecting gently used dorm gear for Grad Bag, a non-profit green initiative that collects, refurbishes and redistributes gently used dorm supplies to college-bound freshman from low income households. Please bring your items to the bin in the school lobby by Sunday, February 4.
