Based on a true story is a tagline that we are all too familiar with. When you see this flashbefore a film you either scoff and laugh or cringe with fear. It instantly becomes more terrifying

because in the back of your mind youre questioning, Holy cannoli, this actually happened?

Well, most of the time it probably didnt.Blair Witch,TheFourth Kind, andParanormal Activityare examples of movies that are about as grounded in reality as Barney. But what if the story

really is true? What if it COULD happen to you? These movies are based on real life events,

mishaps, and monsters. Lock your doors and watch your backs, or you just might be the nextvictim.

The Exorcist

Movie

This is quite possibly one of the scariest movies of all time. Period. Its the story of a young girlwhos possessed by the devil and the grueling exorcism that follows- 360-degree head turns,

projectile vomiting, crucifixes in forbidden places. You know the deal.

True story

The real events are based on the exorcism of a young boy from Maryland named Robbie

Mannheim (aka Ronald Doe). He allegedly became possessed after playing with a Ouija

board. His exorcism took place in St. Louis, Missouri (which is a little too close to home for me)

and was performed by two Jesuit priests from St. Louis University. Go SLU!

Movie

The so-called Mothman is a winged creature whose appearance seems to foretell disastrous

events, like a bridge collapsing and killing people. Richard Gere plays a journalist who goes toPoint Pleasant, West Virginia to investigate several sightings of the Mothman after his wife dies

from seeing the creature herself.

True story

Reports of sightings of a large, unidentified winged creature dubbed The Mothman occurredin Point Pleasant, West Virginia for 13 months between 1966 and 1967. During this time frame

at least 100 people made claims of seeing this creature. Journalist/novelist John Keel traveled to

Point Pleasant to investigate this phenomenon and became so convinced of its validity that hewrote a book about it.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Rose, on whom he had performed an exorcism. Through flashbacks, we see the story of her

exorcism unfold. (Emily is played by Jennifer Carpenter, who is Dexters sister Deb onDexter,and his real-life ex-wife.)

True story

As if the movie wasnt scary enough, the actual events they are based on are both terrifying andsad.Anneliese Michelwas a sixteen-year-old German girl who began displaying symptoms of

demonic possession in 1968. In 1975, two priests performed 67 exorcisms of what were believed

to be several demons ( including Hitler, Judas, and Cain) over a 10 month period. During that

time, Anneliese barely ate or drank, and she died of starvation in July 1976. Her parents and thepriests were tried and found guilty of manslaughter. They were sentenced to six months in jail.

The Haunting in Connecticut

Movie

A family moves to Connecticut to be near the doctor caring for their sick son. They soon realize

that their new home is a former mortuary haunted by dozens of evil spirits.

True story

I am still a little skeptical about this being a true story, but here are the events. The Parker family

moves to Connecticut in 1986 to be close to the cancer specialists treating their fourteen-year-old

son Paul. The family would later claim that it was plagued by a demonic presence. Mortuaryequipment was discovered in the basement, and it was later found that the house had been a

funeral home. They reported sightings of several ghosts, and unexplained sounds throughout the

house. The Parkers hired Ed and Lorraine Warren to exorcise their house in 1988. There is anepisode ofA Haunting (a Discovery Channel program) that is also based on this story.

Movie

If you havent heard ofThe Entity then you probably arent aware of how terrifying it is that this

is actually based on true events. The movie tells the story of a single mother who is plagued by asupernatural entity that abuses and rapes her repeatedly. She receives help from paranormal

researchers, who document the haunting and attempt to trap the spirit.

True story

Really?! There is a documented case of a ghost physically and sexually assaulting a woman?!

The actual story is based on Doris Bither from Culver City, California who claimed to be

haunted by a ghost that was attacking her and her children. Kerry Gaynor and Barry Taff are two

paranormal researchers who investigated the case and lent some validity to Doriss claims bywitnessing an apparition and floating lights and objects. Though they never witnessed any

assaults, Bithers story is considered one of the most compelling in the history of paranormalresearch.

This movie- hands down- was what first convinced me that aliens are real. If you dont think

aliens are scary then I suggest you check out this movie. Its the story of a guy namedTravisWaltonwho is abducted and experimented on by aliens. His friends/co-workers are accused of

his murder, but five days later he is found alive, naked and incoherent. At a welcome home party

he starts to experience flashbacks about his abduction.

True story

Travis Walton is a real person. He claims to have been abducted by a UFO on November 5, 1975

in Apache Sitgreaves National Forest. Travis could not be found, but reappeared after five days.

He gave a detailed account of his abduction and what happened while on the UFO. Travis took atotal of three polygraph tests, failing one and passing two. In 1978, Travis wrote a book about his

abduction calledThe Walton Experience. Read the book, watch the movie and decide for

yourself.
