Literacy Action Plan To have all students reading at or above grade level we will again hire a Literacy Specialist. We

will make a Tier III reading intervention class available for students in grades 6 through 8. for the 2013-2014 school year. Students will be placed in this class according to data received from the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI), AIMSWeb Curriculum Based Measurement (CBM), and Language Arts CRT scores from the previous year. All students who scored "below basic" on the SRI will be given the reading CBM. The Literacy Specialist will continue to work with teachers on data and student placement along with coaching Language Arts teachers with reading techniques and models best practices in those basic reading classrooms. We will continue to use and implement research based reading instruction as necessary, SRA Corrective Reading, Reading Rewards, a phonics program for middle school learners, Six-Minute Solution: A Reading Fluency Program as well as using Jamestown Signature Reading to work on comprehension and paired reading.  The Reading Specialist will continue to design literacy lessons based on research based comprehension reading strategies. In addition we will continue to expand our explicit academic vocabulary program in all subject areas and increase student engagement using structured reading responses. The reading specialist will meet for one day during the year with five academic department (Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Reading) to train content area teachers on literacy strategies they can use in their classes on a daily basis. Land Trust monies will be used to pay the cost of the substitute teachers on those days. In order to help Tier III reading students maintain their end of year reading levels we will offer a summer reading camp. Students who qualify for this camp will receive reading help through the summer from a reading teacher working here at the school. Those who meet their goals will be able to attend a special field trip to a Barnes and Noble bookstore. We will also use some money to purchase books for this program.

Implementation We implemented our 2013-14 literacy action plan by

employing a literacy specialist at our school. Along with teachers, she helped determine which Tier 3 reading students would benefit from a special reading intervention class by using SRI scores, CBM's, and CRT testing data. Reading teachers were trained in the use of specialized reading curriculum, and as a school we continued to expand the use of explicit vocabulary instruction in all content areas. Our reading specialist did meet with all content area teachers in groups during the year to facilitate additional content specific literacy training. Our summer reading camp was held to assist struggling readers to maintain growth they made during the year through the summer break.

Action Plan To help Tier III math students attain the basic skills they will need to be

successful in grade level math classes we plan to implement a variety of interventions and supports. We will make a Tier III math intervention class available to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The math department will use CRT scores and present levels of achievement to place students in these classes, which will be offered as a “double-dose” of mathematics instruction. Students in these classes will have opportunities for review and remediation, front-loading of concepts, and additional time with teacher support to complete assignments and master concepts. Placement in these classes will be based on 9-week quarters, and students who reach mastery goals will be graduated out of the program. Another Tier III intervention will be the use of ALEKS computer software. Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. Math teachers will use M-COMP and M-CAP scores to identify students for placement in classes that will specifically focus on the ALEKS program.

Implementation Tier 3 math classes were built into the

schedule. The math department used CRT and achievement data to place students into those classes. Math instruction was delivered as outlined in the action plan.

We are under way doing this now Mondays are dedicated to individual

counseling and we are currently running 8 groups. We have initiated a new protocol where we assess the needs of students based on issue and amount of time needed to assist, so our groups are divided into weekly and biweekly groups. This gives us the ability to provide services to more students.

Student Needs Assessment Results Students feel like they know who their

counselor is and that they can get help from their counselor if need be. Only 17% of students needed help resolving an issue with a counselor so far this year.

Students identified a need to have more interests and skills assessed (or at least be helped to understand what this looks like)
