“Applause begets applause in the theatre, as laughter begets laughter and tears beget tears .”

—Clayton Hamilton, Theory of the Theatre

What does it mean to be community theatre? It means you . Each role supports another—and your role as audience is no different! Our production staff, actors, and volunteers have had a great time working hard to take these shows from page to stage . The final step is inviting you, our audience, into the world we’ve created just for you .

This season, we present you with a slate of performances that bring laughter and tears, joy and sadness—and all things in between. We take you from the set of a biblical epic to an English flat to a spelling competition to the Warsaw ghetto to magical woods and, finally, to a Pennsylvanian estate where nothing short of hilarity can ensue .

Thank you for joining us on this adventure—sit back, relax, and enjoy the world we’ve created for you .

Directing is always a challenge . Epic Proportions presents several especially interesting challenges, requiring me to hold many emotional, dramatic, techni-cal and theatrical concepts in mind at once . First, it is a very complex techni-cal production . The sound and lighting requirements which we have set for ourselves are exacting and difficult to accomplish . The set is no less than the greatest epic movie set, but “in progress .” The props are a challenge, requir-ing some fairly arcane weaponry and equipment . The costumes range from contemporary 1930s to ancient Egyptian and Roman and involve many “quick changes .” The acting must run from high romance to action and fighting to slapstick hilarity, but must still ring true to life . And all this must be melded into one continuous, harmonious and funny whole. Whew!

A note on the music . The music used throughout this production has been especially fun to choose. Excluding sound effects, I have used only music from motion pictures. Including preshow, intermission, curtain call and post show music, over 30 movies are represented. Like the movies themselves, I have not felt obligated to stay “in period .” Many creative anachronisms are purposely part of our score . See if you can identify all the movies!

It has, as always, been a pleasure working with such a talented group of peo-ple, and with the staff and board of the SCCT .

ARTISTIC STAFF figuring out how to make a stage into an entirely dif-ferent world for a short period of time. Theatre is all about creating a different reality, and I love to help make that happen.

GINA BOWKER (Stage Manager) Gina is excited to be back for her fourth season at the Barn. In pre-vious years, she Stage Managed Twelve Angry Men, Hello, Dolly! and West Side Story, among others. Later this summer, Gina will be Assistant Directing Spirits Willing at West End Studio Theatre in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She’d like to thank Bruce for this opportunity and Adam for his love.

BRUCE FLEISCHER (Director) is thrilled to be directing his second play for the SCCT. He has an extensive background in many areas of the enter-tainment industry, as a performer, director, teacher, technician and administrator. Bruce is an attorney and the Executive Director of the Centre County Bar Association. He is extremely grateful to the cast and crew of this production for all their wonderful and cre-ative work. As always, he thanks his wife and family for their love, support and patience.

DAN ALBRIGHT (Drafter) I am currently a Technical Director student at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. I have worked as a crew member for “The Matchmaker,” “Rent” and “Dialogues of the Carmelites.” I enjoy

ARTISTIC STAFF JILLIAN WARBURTON (Scenic Designer) is excited to be returning to the barn for her fifth season! Last summer she worked for the Cortland Repertory Theatre in Cortland, NY as their scenic intern/carpen-ter and then completed her last 2 weeks of summer as a rigging and automation intern for Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère in Las Vegas, NV. She’s overjoyed to be returning to the barn for another great season and is even more excited to be given the opportunity to merge her best friends from college with her commu-nity theatre family. At the completion of this 2011 sea-son, Jillian will be returning for her junior year at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music as a B.F.A. in Technical Direction.
