Questions for Chapters 3 and 4: Steam turbine, Gas turbine, Internal Combustion Engine and Combined Cycle Power Plants. 1. Recognize the T-S diagrams for: Carnot Cycle, Rankine Cycle, Brayton Cycle, Combined Cycle and Diesel Cycle. 2. In each cycle from question 1 point out where is heat added () and subtracted (), and where is work added () and subtracted ().

4. Recognize the schematic symbols for Turbine, Compressor, Boiler, Heat Exchanger, Condenser, Generator, Cooling Tower, Pumps and Electric Substation.

5. Recognize the schematic layout of Gas turbine, Internal Combustion Engine and Combined Cycle power plants and name their most important components. (Chapter 3, slides 19, 20, 51, 52; chapter 4, slides 6, 7). Steam power plant

6. Can Gas Turbines only operate with Natural Gas? If not, what other fuel? No. The other fuels are Fuel oil, syngas, naphtha, low BTU gas, crude oil, and other fuels

7. How many water circuits do a Steam Turbine Power Plants have?

8. Why is air filtered in a combined cycle power plant? Because we need toprovide clean air into the compressor. During continuous operation the impurities and dust in the air deposits on the compressor blades. This reduces the efficiency and output of the plant. The Air Filter in the Air Intake system prevents this.

9. What is a combined cycle power plant? A combined cycle power plant is one of the most efficient thermal power plants: 60% of the fuel consumed is transformed into electrical power, versus 40% in a single cycle power plant.

10. Why are thermoelectric power plants usually located near rivers, lakes or the ocean? Because they require cooling water for the system to reuse the steam which is cooled and condensed back into water.

11. Name 4 advantages and 3 disadvantages of ICE power plants. Advantages:

Design and plant layout are quiet simple. Occupies less space. It can be started in short time. Less water for cooling.

Disadvantages Running cost is higher. Maintenance cost is high. Limited power output

12. Which energy sources studied in class can use a Steam Turbine to produce electric power? Coal, nuclear, thermoelectric, biomass, geothermal
