WhatamiraculousstoryunfoldedlastAugustwhenSCEAwascalledinforhelpconcerningtwoemaciatedhorsesfoundontheoutskirtsofLatrobe.Previousowner,KimRoman,hadsoldthetwoWalkerstoawomanshethoughtwouldtakegoodcareofthemandhadalsotoldherthatshewouldbuythembackifneedbe.However,unbe-knownsttoKim,thewomanmovedfromtheareatakingthehorseswithherandleavingKimwithnocontactinformation.Shehadsuchanuneasyfeelingaboutherhorseswelfarethatshesearchedfruit-lesslyforthemforaperiodoftwoyears.Shewouldevendrivearoundcheckinganyfieldsthatlookedliketheyhadthepossibilityofcontainingahorse.Givinguphopethatshewouldeverfindthem,Kimwasshockedandappalledtoseeherhorsesontheeveningnewsthatfatefulday.Con-tactingusimmediately,arrangementsweremadeforanadoptionassoonastheWalkershadregainedenoughhealthtomakethemove.Sincethen,thecourthearingwasheld,theabuserwasfoundguiltyofallchargesandhasbeenorderedtopayallrestitution,finesandcourtcosts.

ThefollowingletterisfromKimalongwithrecentphotosofthehorsesshowingthefantasticimprovementsbothanimalshavemade.Shehopestoberidingthemagainthiscomingsummer.
IthasbeenalittlemorethanfourmonthssinceEbonyandDukecamebackhometome,andImustsaytherewerealotofchallengesalongtheway.Itwasveryhardtoseethemintheconditionstheywerein.IwasHeartBroken!ButitmademeevenmoredeterminedtogetthembacktobethehorsesthatIhadbefore.Dukewasgoingtobethebiggestchallenge!Hishoovesweresoovergrownandsplit,thatitcausedrotationandgreatpainwhenhetriedtowalk.Imadesomephonecallstotrytofigureoutwhatcouldbedonetohelphim.NobodyseemedtobeabletotellmewhatIcoulddo.Itwaslookinghopeless.Iprayedforguidanceandwisdom,andIfinallygottheanswerthatIhadbeenwaitingfor.Mystepdaughterputmeintouchwithafarrierthatwouldbethean-swertomyprayers.WaylonCameronandToddAllencameouttoseewhattheycoulddo,andthethreehourstheyspentwithDuketotallychangedhim. Thecorrectiveshoeingtheydidchangedeverything!Dukecannotonlywalk,hecanrun,andImeanRun!Iwitnessedamiracle!
Ebony’sbiggesthurdlewasthatheneededtoputweighton.SoImadethearrangementstohavehisteethfloated.Heisgettinggrainwithsomecornoil3timesaday,andititpayingoff.HelooksGreat!Youcannotseehisribsanymore.Hiscoatisblack,andhismaneandtailaregrowingin.Amazing!Ebonyisandwillalwaysbemy“BlackBeauty”.IamforevergratefultoallwhosavedEbonyandDuke,andasGodasmywitness,-theywillneverbeneglectedagain!

OnSat.Nov.5th,SecondChanceEquineAssociationandRollingRockHuntPonyClubco-sponsoredthe “Save Your Horse, a Safety Seminar” attheLigonierTownHall.EdChildressfromtheNorthStrabaneTownshipFireDept.wastheprimaryspeaker.
ThroughSCEAsponsorshiptheseminarwasofferedfreetothepublicandtoallhorseenthusiasts.
Topicsofdiscussionwere:•WhentocallyourEquineVeterinarian•WorkingwithEmergencyRespondersthroughtheIncident•SafeHorseHauling•TrailSafety•BarnFireSafety•FireExtinguishers•PastureSafety
Livefiredemonstrationsandtipsforsafetyduringanemergencywithequinemadeforanexcitingday.Over80peopleattendedtheeventandtheTribuneReviewnewspapersentareportertocovertheevent.DonationswereacceptedatthedoortosupporttheLigonierVolunteerFireDept.

Prevent Dehydration and Colic by Heating Drinking Water in Winter
Whilemosthorseownersnaturallymonitortheirhorse’swaterintakeduringthehotsummermonths,manyrelaxthatvigilanceduringthewinter.However,gettingenoughwaterduringcoldweatherisjustasimportantasitisduringthesummer.Horsesneedlesswaterinthewinter,andtherefore,naturallydrinkless.However,oftentheydrinktoolittle.Researchershavediscoveredthatthisten-dencytodrinktoolittlewatercanbecounteredbysimplyofferingyourhorsewarmwaterduringthewinter.Butdoesitreallymakethatmuchdifferencehowmuchwateryourhorsedrinks?Absolutely!AccordingtoresearchdoneattheUniversityofPennsylvania,thereareanecdotalcorrelationsbetweendecreasedwaterandfecalimpactioncolic.Increasingtheamountofwaterahorsedrinksisaneasyandinexpensivesolutiontokeepyourhorseatthepeakofhealthduringthewinter.
Aresearchprojectcompletedattheuniversity’sNewColtonCenterprovedthatponies,whenofferedwarmwaterornearfreezingwater,drankawhopping40%morewarmwater.Thisstatisticremainedconstantwhethertheponieswereofferedwaterthatwaskeptwarmconstantly,oriftheirdrinkingbucketsweresimplyfilledwithwarmwatertwicedaily.Theponiesdrankthemostwithinthreehoursafterfeeding,orafterthewatercontainerswererefilled.Thisstudyalsoshowedthattheponiesactuallydrankmorewaterthanindicatedinpreviouslypublishedmaintenancerequirementswhentheywereofferedwarmwater.Theponiesinthestudygroupdrankanaverageof9.9liters,orabouttwoandahalfgallons.Thisis62%morethanthemaintenanceguidelineofonly6.1litersperday.Providingwarmwaterisrelativelyeasyforhorsesthatwinterindoors,butturnoutsprovideabitmoreofachallenge. Automaticwatersareagoodsolutionforoutdoorwinteringhorsesandtherearemanydifferentmodelsavail-able.Makingsurethatthewatereriscorrectlyinstalledisthemostimportantkeyinpreventingproblemslateron.Thewaterershouldbecheckedandcleaneddailytoensurenoproblemsormalfunctions.Ifanautomaticwatererisnotanoption,considercarryingbucketsofhotwaterouttwicedailytothehorses.Mixalittlecoldwaterfromthebarntapbeforeofferingit,creatinganicelywarmdrink. Ifyouarewonderinghowwarmorcooltomakeit,remember,ifyouwouldnotdrinkit,don’taskyourhorseto.Thereareotherwaystoheatyourhorseswaterwhichincludedifferenttypesoftankheaters. Oneheatermodelisenclosedandcreatedtofloatinastocktank.Itiscontrolledbyathermostatandhasanautomaticshut-off,butgivenahorsestendencytoplaywithobjects,itmaynotbetheidealchoice.Othertypesofheat-ersandde-icersdon’tfloat,butaredesignedtositonthebottomofthetanktokeeplivestockfromdisturbingthem.Someareequippedwiththermostatsandautomaticshut-offswiththethermostatsbeingadjustableandreplaceableincaseofmalfunction. Rubbermaidstocktanksnowhaveaheaterunitwhichinstallsthroughthedrainplugopeningatthebottomofthetank.Thiskeepstheelectricalcordoutoftheway.Thisunitisalsocontrolledbyathermostatandautomaticshut-off.

Theysoldavarietyofgoodfoodandbeveragestoamultitudeofvendorsandbargainshoppersalike.Itwasaverywellplannedandexecutedeventandeveryoneseemedtothoroughlyenjoytheday.SCEAparticipatedasoneofthevendorssellingourwaresandpromotingtheorganization. Thedayconcludedwithmanyvendorsdonatinguseditemsfortherescues.Weseemedtobringbackwaymorethanwewentdownwithandgreatlyappreciatebeingthoughtof.WewouldliketothankRheinholdSchmittandRickDillonformanningtheboothwithBryce.
