Our school is a lively and caring community school where children come to enjoy their learning. We aim to achieve a happy and nurturing school environment where all children are given the opportunity to realise their full potential in all aspects of school life. We believe a child is far more likely to succeed when staff and parents work together to support children with their learning and we therefore aim to develop a close co-operation between home and school.

Tywardreath School is at the heart of the community which it serves.

“Our aim is to ensure every child feels safe and secure and that the learning they receive is appropriate to them as individuals. We strive

to be an inclusive school. Every child is encouraged to try their best and is given the tools to know what they need to do to get even better! I have high expectations and together as team we

are all fully committed to providing the highest quality of education for all our children.”

Claire McColville, Acting Principal

“Tywardreath School prides itself on providing a happy, safe, secure and supportive learning environment. At Tywardreath

every child is special and unique. All our children are encouraged to care for and support one another. At the centre of

our ethos is an unwavering belief that all children can succeed and should enjoy their school experience while achieving their full potential. We believe this is achieved through a close and trusting

relationship between home and school, both working together to promote the vision, aims and ethos of the school.

I consider it to be a great privilege to be the Executive Principal of such a busy, vibrant and successful school. If you would like to visit or have

any questions, please do not hesitate to call us, and either Claire McColville our Acting Principal or myself would be pleased to see you.”

Heidi Hoskin, Executive Principal

Learn Grow ProsperTywardreath School is part of the Adventure Learning Academy Trust (ALAT) family and our vision is underpinned by the ALAT principles of ‘Learn’, ‘Grow’ and ‘Prosper’ so that pupils receive the very best education and realise their full potential in a happy and caring environment, enabling them to lead a full, purposeful and happy life.

ALAT shares the same vision for teaching and learning and school ethos as Tywardreath School; a vision focused on the

individual learning needs of every child. ALAT has developed a personal learning approach that enables each pupil to reach the

highest level of individual achievement through a customised curriculum and a range of learning skills.

Through proven practices, ALAT transforms learning, raises standards and provides the highest quality learning environments, enabling pupils and

teaching staff to thrive and be the best.

Inspirational learning activities Here at Tywardreath School we believe that a successful curriculum is built on inspirational learning activities and high quality teaching. It’s about creating a classroom environment that allows children to learn in a way that motivates and interest them.

We follow the Cornerstones Curriculum which features more than 70 Imaginative Learning Projects. Each project is split into sections, which see children progress through four stages of learning: Engage, Develop, Innovate, Express.

In addition, all our pupils have access to Adventure Learning. Adventure Learning is a teaching methodology that provides exciting and challenging ways for children to develop their learning skills through bringing ‘real life’ context to learning concepts and ideas. This is achieved through ‘learning expeditions’ – both inside the classroom and in out of school settings.

Learning through adventure has a proven track record in developing personal qualities of independence, problem solving ability, discipline, team working and confidence – skills that are in demand in the modern workplace and which underpin successful social development.

“I like creating and

working on things I’ve never done

before.” Year 5 pupil

Learning and fun beyond the classroom Our school offers an extensive range of fun, challenging and enriching activities designed to complement your child’s formal learning in the classroom. They provide valuable opportunities for your child to challenge themselves, to learn new skills, make new friends, and broaden their school experience.

Sport plays an important role in every child’s education. We believe that how schools introduce and promote sport affects not only children’s development of a healthy lifestyle, but also their attitudes towards sport and exercise in the future. We have a wide variety of both competitive and non-competitive sports and we encourage all children to take part so they increase their physical exercise beyond the Government’s two hours a week guideline.

We are very fortunate to live in an area so rich in environmental opportunities. We try to take as much advantage of this as possible, using the area immediately around the school

and further afield to cover many aspects of the curriculum.

Older children have the opportunity to take part in residential activities, usually during the summer term. These visits always prove to be very valuable and

we often use the county outdoor education centres, where we know safety is of paramount importance and your child is in the hands of very competent, experienced and fully qualified instructors.

We hope every child takes part in a residential at least once during their primary school life as the children thoroughly enjoy the experience and they develop greater independence, self-reliance and self-confidence.

We welcome parents into school and value the partnerships that exist between home and school. We offer opportunities to meet through a whole range of events including parental consultations, concerts and sports and fundraising events.

“At the heart of the community with traditional values and high standards”

At Tywardreath School, we value the importance of developing strong links between the school and local, regional and national communities. Through assemblies, concerts and special events, we involve our pupils in the local community, so that they learn how to participate in a practical way in the life and concerns of their neighbourhood and communities. Working with parents, local residents, the business community, public services, and voluntary services teaches the children to become active young citizens.
