The Commercial Vehicle Alliance, that is the Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster for Digital Commercial Vehicle Technology (DNT), the Commercial Vehicle Cluster South-West (CVC) as well as the Centre for Commercial Vehicle Tech-nology (ZNT), aims at a close cooperation between business and science.

With regard to the economic and scientifi c relevance of the commercial vehicle sector in Rhineland-Palatinate, it is highly consistent that the federal state has appointed the automotive and commercial vehicle industry to be one of its major focuses in its Regional Innovation Strategies (RIS) in 2014. Rhineland-Palatinate will continue to further and support this potential in the future, in order to guarantee the contestability of all stakeholders involved. I am con-vinced that this measure is indispensable to maintain the region’s position in global competition.

Malu DreyerPrime Minister, Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

in times of increasing digitalisation and emerging virtual worlds, of new busi-ness models and web-based enterprises, we shall not forget that our modern economy is still highly dependent on effi cient commercial vehicles. These ma-chines are necessary to maintain and improve our infrastructure, to guarantee food supply as well as the transport of materials and goods. Commercial vehi-cles are a principal requirement for our highly effi cient economic processes.

A great number of performance-enhancing measures result from digitising vehicles as well as their operating systems. Phenomena such as autonomous driving, man-machine-interface, real-time analysis, on-board diagnostics and networking vehicles prove that IT and vehicle technology are inseparable nowadays.

This year, the Commercial Vehicle Alliance hosts their fourth International Commercial Vehicle Symposium since 2010. Rhineland-Palatinate is the ideal location for such an infl uential event: It offers excellent competences and re-sources in the fi eld of utility vehicles. More than 25% of all German commer-cial vehicles are produced in the south-west of Rhineland-Palatinate and the neighbouring Rhine-Neckar region. Not only are we home to major suppliers of the vehicle production industry, but we also offer an outstanding network of researchers who cooperate closely with local enterprises. In Kaiserslautern and the greater area, the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, the Fraunhofer-Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE, the Fraunhofer-Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM and the Research Institute for Artifi cial Intelligence (DFKI) employ about 150 researchers, who analyse the techno-logical challenges which the commercial vehicle industry has to face in the future.
