STORYLINES

INTO THE RECORD BOOKSNumerous program records were set during Denver’s last meet including the program’s highest-ever road score and third-highest score overall (197.450). It marked the earliest Denver has ever scored a 197.000 or higher, doing so in just four meets. The previous record was six meets in 2004.

Denver’s 49.375 on beam at West Virginia also matches the sixth-best score in program history – and is now the highest road score – and its 49.375 on bars tied the eighth-highest score.

Junior Maddie Karr notched a near-perfect 9.975 on vault, which ties DU’s seventh-highest individual score on the event. Her 39.700 in the all-around is now the sixth-best mark in school history.

KARR KEEPS GOINGKarr captured four event titles at West Virginia – all-around, vault, bars and beam – to bring her career total to 60, which moves her into fourth-most in DU history. She is now chasing third place, which is 63 titles owned by Heather Huffaker.

BIG 12 HONOR FOR RUIZFor the second week in a row, a DU gymnast has captured the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award, this time going to freshman Alexandria Ruiz. She set or tied four career highs during last weekend’s meet including a 39.425 in the all-around to finish tied for second overall. Her new personal best of 9.925 on floor also earned her a share of the event title – the first of her career on floor.

NATIONAL RANKINGS as of February 4, 2019

Three Pioneers have now captured three weekly awards from the Big 12. Sophomore Lynnzee Brown was Gymnast of the Week for the week of January 14 while freshman Alexis Vasquez was Newcomer of the Week last week.

MAGNESS MAGICSunday’s meet is the first of three for DU in Magness Arena this season. The Pioneers are trying to set a new attendance record this week – currently 4,634, which was set on January 14, 2018, during DU’s only Magness Arena meet of the season.

DU will also compete in Magness Arena on February 24 against Iowa State and Boise State, and then again on March 10 against Nebraska, Arizona State and Pittsburgh.

CONFERENCE COMPETITONFor the third-consecutive week, Denver competes against a Big 12 Conference opponent. Oklahoma and Denver faced off two weeks ago at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, and DU topped West Virginia and Iowa State last weekend in Morgantown, W. Va.

DU will see Iowa State again in Denver on February 24 before the Pioneers travel to Ames, Iowa, on March 15. All four teams will convene in Norman, Okla., on March 23 for the 2019 Big 12 Championship.

WHAT TO WATCH FORVault: After a near-perfect 9.975 last weekend at West Virginia, Karr moved into the team lead in average vault scoring for the year. Brown holds the second-highest vault average while Mia Sundstrom, who has scored a career-best 9.875 in each of the last two meets, is third on the team. Senior Diana Chesnok, senior Kaitlyn Schou and freshman Ruiz round out DU’s lineup, and each scored at least a 9.800 last weekend.

Bars: All six of Denver’s bars scores last weekend were above the 9.800 mark including an event-winning 9.925 from Karr and a season-best 9.900 from sophomore Emily Glynn. Karr has the team’s best average score on the event so far while sophomores Glynn and Brown have matching averages to tie for second.

Close behind are senior Claire Kern in fourth, and Sundstrom and Ruiz tied for fifth.

Beam: In the last two meets, Vasquez has led the team on beam with a 9.950 at the Metroplex Challenge and a 9.925 at West Virginia. Karr landed a season-best 9.925 last weekend to share the beam title with Vasquez. Ruiz, who has competed on the event in back-to-back meets, joins Brown and Schou with the highest season averages on the event. Sundstrom, too, had her best beam routine of the season last weekend.

Floor: Denver’s 49.400 on floor at West Virginia was just .025 off the team’s highest score this season and featured two 9.925s from Brown and Ruiz – marking a new career high for the freshman. Brown’s season average of 9.875 leads the team with Schou and Karr rounding out the top three for DU.

EYE ON THE RANKINGSFor the third week in a row, Denver holds the No. 7 spot in the national rankings. DU continues to be ranked inside the top 10 on three events – No. 5 on bars, No. 8 on vault and No. 9 on floor – and improved its beam ranking to No. 14.

Karr is currently tied for No. 4 in the nation on bars and jumped up to No. 7 on vault.

Brown is again ranked No. 11 in the all-around while also tying for No. 22 on vault.

A pair of Denver freshmen hold national rankings as well, starting with Vasquez, who is up to No. 11 on beam. Ruiz is nationally-ranked for the first time in her career, debuting at No. 21 in the all-around.

LAST TIME OUTDenver has its strongest showing of the season – in record fashion – last weekend on the road, tallying a season-best 197.450 to defeat Big 12 opponents West Virginia and Iowa State. Of Denver’s 24 routines, 23 scored at least a 9.800, which is the most in program history for a single meet.

DU’s team scores on vault (49.300) and beam (49.375) were both season highs.

The Pioneers captured all five individual titles, led by Karr’s four-event haul in the all-around (39.700) and on vault (9.975), bars (9.925) and beam (9.925). Vasquez shared the beam win with Karr while Brown and Ruiz took home the win on floor. All four of DU’s all-around competitors landed on the podium as well with three Pioneers sharing second place with matching 39.425s.
