We Made the News! DidyouseethearticleinSt.LouisCatholicMagazine(forthosewhosubscribetotheSt.LouisReview)aboutSCBUnityDaycelebratingourculturaldiversity?Ifnot,hereitis... avid Lopez and Jason Kulma went through the buffet line set up under the park shelter

and sat at a nearby picnic table with their families. They soon found that they had something in common. Each had moved to St. Charles several years ago from the Chicago area. They talked about their time living in north-ern Illinois and where they live today. The families had just taken part in St. Charles Borromeo Parish’s Unity Day Mass at Bales Dusable Park in St. Charles and came together for a picnic. The event is a gathering of Anglos who normally attend the Eng-lish-speaking Masses and Latinos who attend the Mass in Spanish at the parish church. It is a way to cele-brate the cultural diversity in the par-ish. The Mass began with flags carried in a procession representing the countries of origin of parishioners and their ancestors. Songs, the Gospel, the homilies and prayers were said in English and Spanish. The refrain of the opening song was “We are the body of Christ” or “Somos el cuerpo de Cristo.” Lopez looks forward to the event each year. “You eat a lot of differ-ent dishes and meet people you did-n’t know from the church.” he said.

Kulma noted that he appreciates the work it takes to put the event together. Associate pastor Father Robert Menner said that “God sees each one of us as sons and daughters, and that makes all of us brothers and sisters.” He added in his homily that “the Holy Spirit … makes us one fami-ly even though we may speak many languages.” He urged the congregation to reach out to others.

The Mass and picnic began eight years ago as a way to get people together. Now, he said, they are together for many other purposes, including Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) retreats, the parish picnic, a Cinco de Mayo event, a celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guada-lupe, dialogue and faith-sharing ses-sions and more. Adolfo Zamores has been involved with organizing the event for four years. “Everyone is working together for unity,” he said. Every year more people join in the fun, “and it feels very comfortable,” Carlos Garcia said. The Hispanic ministry began at the parish in 2001. St. Charles serves about 500 Latino families and 1,500 other families. Over at the barbecue stand on the picnic grounds, Chris Burgoyne, a member of the Hibernians, an Irish-Catholic group, chatted with Rapha-el Hernandez of the Los Amigos de St. Patrick. The “cooking group,” as the mix of Anglos and Latinos called themselves, have fun while they work. Community, friendship and espe-cially faith are what’s important to the group, Hernandez said. Burgoyne added that “I love it. It’s great.” Most of all, he said, “We’re one.”

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All the Difference

Contributions for November 22/23

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treas-ure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

“But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.” (Luke 21:28)

We celebrate Advent each year in preparation of the birth of Jesus, His first coming, as we await his second coming. In this Advent season, use the Sacrament of Rec-onciliation to strengthen your relationship with Jesus. It’s never too late.

We pray that we strengthen our relationship with Jesus through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick

December 19/20 at all Masses

The Sacrament is a Real Sign of Jesus coming with His Healing Love for each sick person through the powerful, life-giving prayer and support of us, His church. It is for anyone who is seeking our Lord’s Healing, “In body, mind and spirit.”

If it is possible, parishioners who are shut-in might want to be brought by their family or a Eucharistic Minister or neighbor.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Let us pray for the shepherds of the Church, that they may support and promote the dignity of each person as they guide all people towards Christ.
As we begin Advent we are called to “wait” in joyful anticipation for the grace of Christ-mas to once again bless our lives. Wherever you live in our parish, there are poor fami-lies within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell.
Your gift in the monthly St. Vincent de Paul collection will help the poor celebrate the grace of God’s love this Christmas. For more information on how you can help us help others, contact Joyce Cain at 636-493-0089, or any of the St. Vincent de Paul volunteers.
Help a Neighbor—Donate Your Car Running or not, obtain a tax deduction and help those in need by donating your car, truck, van, boat, motorcy-cle, or motor home to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The Society will handle all the details, including towing, free of charge. Call toll free (800) 322-8284 or fill out the online donation form at www.svdpusacars.com. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic lay organization dedi-cated to providing person-to-person service to those in need. The proceeds will help women in a crisis pregnancy pay for housing and basic expenses for economically struggling families and their babies in the St. Charles area. What a beautiful Ad-vent message this will be.
Please take a bottle, fill it with change during the next few weeks, and return the bottle to the church nar-thex or the church office after the first of the year. Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo!
Sunday Preschool during 8:30 Mass for ages 3-5 (no diaper wearers please)
After School Room, Room 27 (in the new addition of school)
In this dynamic talk Dr. Scott Hahn explains the importance of oaths, which in-voke God’s name and implore His assistance. He shows that oaths are also the means of transforming our personal relationship with Christ into a covenant rela-tionship. Dr. Hahn then explains what led him to move from believing in only two Sacraments to all seven. In sharing these insights, he connects oaths to the seven Sacraments and unveils their mystery and importance. He reveals that the Sacraments are the ordinary means by which God empowers us to do His will. You’ll discover that the Sacraments don’t make holiness easy, but they do make it possible.
This and other CDs are in the narthex. Please use the envelopes provided for your donation and place it in the weekend collection. Thanks!
Today is the first Sunday of Advent, which is also the first Sunday of the new liturgical year (Year C). In this sea-son, we recall two central elements of our faith: the final coming of the Lord in glory and the Incarnation of the Lord in the birth of Jesus. The key themes of the Advent season are watchful waiting, preparation, and justice.
In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus speak to His disciples about the need for vigilance and prayer as they wait for the coming of the Son of Man in glory, and identifies the signs that will signal the Second Coming. Though Jesus predicts a time of destruction and fear, His disciples are not to fear, but are to stand tall. Yet Jesus does not promise deliverance from anxiety or tribulations. He encourages His disciples to pray for strength.
We find in our Christian faith the means by which we witness to God’s unfailing love for us in all circumstances.
Like the first Christians, we may encounter events and circumstances that could lead us to despair. Through prayer, however, we find strength and consolation in Jesus’ words and in His continuing presence with us to endure all things and to witness to the action of God in our world.
• Did the season of Advent catch you by surprise? • How do you feel about the coming of the Lord into
your life during these days? • What will you do to prepare?
There are three steps you will need to do in order to be in compliance: 1. Attend a Protecting God’s Children Workshop. You will need to register for a workshop by going to
www.archstl.org and clicking on “Protecting God’s Children.” The list of workshops will appear. Find a workshop that will work for you and write down the date. Then scroll back up to the top and click “Start Registration” to begin the registration process. It is very quick and easy! It will ask you which workshop you want to attend. When you register you will be asked to read and electronically sign the Code of Ethical Conduct.
2. So, please read and sign the Code of Ethical Conduct. 3. It is also required for us to order a State background screening. Please contact our Child Safety Coordinator, Peggy in
the church office (636-946-1893), to get a copy of the form. We can either email it to you, or send a copy through the mail. The parish pays the fee required by the State. If you have lived outside of Missouri within the past five years, an FBI fingerprint inquiry will be required as well.
Nuestro Santo Padre Francisco, nos ha enseñado con su ejemplo el ir a las periferias, acercarnos a aquellos que no van a la iglesia, que no se acercan. Por tal mo-tivo este año queremos nosotros ir a ellos acercarnos, buscarlos y que mejor motivo que hacerlo con Nuestra Madre la Santísima Virgen María de Guadalupe. El 3 de diciembre comenzamos la Novena Guadalupa-na con algunos cambios, uno de ellos es incorporar las procesiones, para mostrar y pasar esta bella tradición a nuestros hijos. Las procesiones serán en tres barrios diferentes de St Charles donde viven mexicanos, el barrio Sunnydale Mobile Home (en Zumbehl Rd fren-te a Lowe’s), el barrio Town West Mobile Home (94 y Zumbehl Rd) y el barrio Oak Leaf Mobile Home (W Clay frente a Lindenwood).
LA VENIDA DEL REINO Jeremías lo veía venir –el reinado de Jesús y la res-tauración de Jerusalén. Pero, ¿había alguien que le escu-chara? ¿Alguien escucha ahora? Ser profeta tenía que ha-ber sido muy difícil, pero Jeremías era persistente en su mensaje, porque sabía lo necesario que era escucharlo. Persistente en su mensaje también es Pablo, animan-do a los tesalonicenses –y a todos nosotros– a vivir de acuerdo al reino que Jeremías anunció. Nos motiva a comportarnos en el camino de santidad para que este-mos bien preparados para la llegada del rey. Finalmente, Jesús mismo nos dice que estemos siempre atentos para lograr el agrado de nuestro Dios y Rey. Jeremías podía ver que se acercaba el reinado de Jesús. Al comenzar el tiempo de Adviento, Pablo y Jesús nos enseñan no sólo cómo prepararnos para el Reino, sino cómo vivirlo día a día.
