First Reading Is 62:1-5

For Zion's sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her vindication shines forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch. Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory; you shall be called by a new name pronounced by the mouth of the LORD. You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the LORD, a royal diadem held by your God. No more shall people call you "Forsaken, " or your land "Desolate, " but you shall be called "My Delight, " and your land "Espoused." For the LORD delights in you and makes your land his spouse. As a young man marries a virgin, your Builder shall marry you; and as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride so shall your God rejoice in you.

Responsorial Psalm

R.(3) Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations. Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all you lands. Sing to the LORD; bless his name. R. Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations. Announce his salvation, day after day. Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds. R. Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations. Give to the LORD, you families of nations, give to the LORD glory and praise; give to the LORD the glory due his name! R. Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations. Worship the LORD in holy attire. Tremble before him, all the earth; Say among the nations: The LORD is king. He governs the peoples with equity. R. Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations.

Second Reading 1 Cor 12:4-11

Brothers and sisters: There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another, the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another, faith by the same Spirit; to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another, mighty deeds; to another, prophecy; to another, discernment of spirits; to another, varieties of tongues; to another, interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes.

Alleluia Cf. 2 Thes 2:14

R. Alleluia, alleluia. God has called us through the Gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Jn 2:1-11

There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servers, "Do whatever he tells you." Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

THE WEDDING AT CANA Today’s Gospel is a favorite of everyone. Dostoyevsky wrote, “Cana, the first miracle, the compassionate one when Jesus joined not in human sorrow but in human happiness.” It is only John who writes of this miracle. Possibly he was among the guests present. He wrote of it as an old man. The Cana incident was something which he could never forget. He wrote of it because he felt the miracle has much to teach us. The tale tells us a good deal about Mary. It was she who informed her on that the wine had run out. How did she know? One author says she was working in the kitchen with the bride’s parents and helping them cook. There she saw her brother-in law’s alarm. There is a tradition that the bride was Mary’s niece. So, we must conclude that Mary was a warm Jewish woman. She was most anxious to help her sister and her niece keep the costs down by volunteering her labor. This picture of Mary is a fresh one for many. That is true of those who think only of Mary as a woman in wrinkle free blue and white. But the latter is the picture of a plastic person who is constantly looking devoutly into the heavens with hands folded. Thus, John draws for us a flesh and blood Mary. Your prayers to her will come easier if you keep this tableau before you. Furthermore, the miracle reveals that whenever Mary found herself is a bind, she turned to her Son. Having lived with Him for thirty years, she knew He would respond to human needs. When you pray to Jesus, you may want to keep this in mind. Even when her Son turned down her request, Mary did not take no for an answer. Is there anyone here who is still wondering why people have been praying to Mary for 20 centuries? She turned to the maître d’ and instructed him to stand ready. Her faith in the Christ remained firm. She knew He would not see the couple humiliated before their guests. Is not John instructing us that our faith in the Teacher must be similar to that of His own mother? Do we take no for an answer too soon? Notice too where this miracle tales place. It is situated in the home of working class people in an inconsequential, even run down town in Galilee. This is a word picture of Christ the populist. He is willing to squeeze Himself into our kitchen, slip off his sandals, and take a seat at out scarred tables. God is obviously more than willing to involve Himself in our everyday lives. The same God, who keeps the cosmos alive in the palm of his hand, is likewise willing to concern Himself with our ordinary problems. Notice too the occasion, it is of course a wedding. It is a time for laughter, music and very obviously wine. John draws for us a Jesus who Himself enjoys a good time. A party was obviously not something which was beneath him. The miracle produced about 180 gallons of wine. Crashaw wrote, “The bashful maiden water saw its God and blushed.” That was enough wine for a dozen weddings. Jesus is extraordinarily generous. Should we be less? By His presence, Christ showed His belief in the sanctity of marriage.

A Recipe for Happiness in Marriage

Take 2 heaping cups of Patience, 1 heartful of Love, 2 handful of Generosity, a dash of Laughter, and 1 headful of Understanding. Sprinkle with Kindness. Add plenty of Faith and mix well. Spread over a period of a Lifetime and serve to one another. Marriages may be made in heaven, says the psychologist, but they have to be worked out here on earth.

The Art of Marriage A good marriage must be created. In the marriage, the little things are the big things…. It is never being too old to hold hands. It is remembering to say “I love you’ at least once each day. It is never going to sleep angry. It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives. It is standing together and facing the world. It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family. It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways. It is having the capacity to forgive and forget. It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow. It is common search for the good and the beautiful. It is not only marrying the right person.
