To combine the water park proficiency and technology of Schlitterbahn Development

Group with the recreational, sports and aquatics expertise of Recreational Design and

Construction in order to develop a revenue-generating destination attraction. This unique

venue will integrate a one-of-a-kind water park with sports-related activities, lodging and

entertainment. Residents, visitors, youngsters, adults, clubs, churches, schools, and bands

can play, train and compete —all in one place. Or simply relax in the park-like setting!

John Schooley and his partner, Jeff Henry, are park engineers who helped design the slides at Aquaventure. They’re also the masterminds behind three Schlitterbahn Waterparks in Texas, which are considered the best around.

From zip lines, rope courses and water slides to soccer matches, football games and concerts, the possibilities for this site are endless. We envision it becoming the go-to place for class reunions, birthdays, school outings—a driving reason for people to come together.

South Florida is a magnet for entertainment celebrities, and this venue would be the ideal place to showcase talent. Sports and recreation by day—world-class music and entertainment by night.

Design and Technology

The Schlitterbahn Development Group (SDG) designs and develops Transportainment-based water parks and resorts that integrate Schlitterbahn’s patented and innovative aquatic attractions and designs, as well as the operational and safety protocols developed at Schlitterbahn Waterparks.

SDG was instrumental in the design of Kerzner International’s Atlantis Paradise Island Phase III water park expansion in the Bahamas and the Kerzner International water park “The Palm” located in Dubai. Both projects received rave reviews for the Transportainment River and the award-winning Master Blaster uphill water coasters. SDG’sinnovation and vision make them a much sought-after company for high-profile projects.

River Concept

The Transportainment system functionally makes the majority of the waterpark into an exciting multi-dimensional, interconnected ride that reduces and eliminates most queue lines, increases safety, greatly increases the percentage of guests in the park that can be actively experiencing rides and provides unparalleled ADA access to the waterpark experience.

Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark in South Padre Island introduced Rio Aventura—the world’s first Transportainment water park in 2001. This state-of-the-art river system moves guests around the park while floating on water. The attraction combines the elements of transportation, sports and entertainment, while minimizing the time park guests spend standing in lines.

The Rio Aventura is approximately a half-mile long. Guests begin their river adventure by entering from a variety of beaches scattered throughout the park or from the wave pool level by riding uphill on a massive conveyor called an AquaVeyer. They float through sections of slow-moving water and whitewater rapids, detouring through two tube chutes and three Master Blaster uphill water coasters, for a ride that is never the same twice.

The next generation of Transportainment technology debuted at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark in 2006. This award-winning concept combines three separate river adventures into a never-ending tubing experience. Guests can take on the tidal waves of the Torrent River, challenge the rapids of the White Water River or meander along the Crystal River.

Fort Lauderdale enjoys a rich history of direct access to professional and amateur sports. Schlitterbahn, the nations premier family waterpark, has been growing to integrate multiple sports, lodging and entertainment facilities into its successful model. Now Schlitterbahn wishes to bring its latest generation of award winning destination level multiuse family sports, lodging and water entertainment to Fort Lauderdale. We call it the Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Sports Village of Fort Lauderdale.

Given Fort Lauderdale’s extensive history of professional and amateur sports, Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Sports Village of Fort Lauderdale is excited to incorporate amateur athletics into the overall concept. Schlitterbahn Waterpark & Vacation Village of Fort Lauderdale will create a multi-sport multi-use, state-of-the-art athletic facility, complete with environmentally friendly, high quality products, with both player and fan friendly amenities.

The Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Sports Village of Fort Lauderdale proposes to use the present locations of Lockhart and Fort Lauderdale stadiums as the physical basis of the Schlitterbahn waterpark and sports complex. As much as possible, the present stadiums will be retained and morphed and upgraded into the multiuse center. These will include in addition to the new waterpark resort, renovations to the existing Fort Lauderdale Stadium, allowing for virtual golf, baseball and softball simulators. At the Sports Retail Center, the food and beverage service will be creatively themed taking visitors back in time. Food offerings will range from healthful selections to family-favorites of pizza and burgers. Adults will enjoy the wide selection of beers and wines available.

At the Schlitterbahn Sports Village guests can participate in a wide variety of activities ranging from the mild to the wild. Visitors can bike, climb, jump and run, or play in almost any sport imaginable, all located in modern facilities within the Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Sports Village. The Sports Village would be used for intramural team sports and local recreational team sports use, but its main intent is designed to increase the number of teams, players and families coming to Fort Lauderdale. When you bring together the existing 18,500-seat Lockhart Stadium, the entire multi-sport multi-use, state-of-the-art athletic facility is complete.

Adding new amenities to the existing Lockhart Stadium will transform the stadium into a state-of-the-art tournament-sized multi-use athletic field that will meet the standards for National Federation State High School Association (NFHS) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

According to John Webb, Executive Director of Sports Development for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau and according to a recently published article with Fort Lauderdale’s “sunny weather, great venues, easy airport access and diverse hotel products” Webb said that sporting events held in Fort Lauderdale speak for themselves-bringing in $400 million annually to the city.

The Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Sports Village will create a tremendous positive economic impact.

The Schlitterbahn Sports Center will also be the permanent home of The Broward County Sports Hall of Fame. The Sports Hall of Fame honors and recognizes Broward County residents that have set the standard of excellence and have positively affected our county through sports and athletic involvement. The following Broward County sports legends will finally have a permanent spot in Broward County. Each inductee has been a long time Broward resident and has attended high school or competed in Broward County as an athlete or coach.

FAA Similar Projects

Schlitterbahn Galveston Island, Texas

Schlitterbahn Galveston Island, Texas is a 26-acre water park situated on 36 acres of FAA property with more than 35 attractions, has been voted the #1 indoor water park in the country.

The lease approval process consisted of evaluating the existing airport leases to arrive at a fair market value for the land. The Galveston, Texas property was zoned non-aviation as defined in the City Master Plan, and recreation was an approved use. The same is true of the Fort Lauderdale FXE Airport property; the existing Fort Lauderdale stadium and Lockhart stadiums are presently listed on the Broward County property appraisers web site as Recreational and Open Space.

In Galveston the airport development process worked so well that the city is now putting forward a $35 Million bond issue to independently develop a Sports Complex adjacent to the Schlitterbahn Waterpark on airport land in an effort to further expand Galveston’s ability to attract tourists and enhance the quality of the city for its residents.

• Atlantis Resort Paradise Island, Bahamas and Palm Jumeirah, Dubai (Spring 2008): Starting in 1994 CLOWARD H2O has worked on every phase of development of these two sister projects on opposite sides of the globe creating the iconic water environments these developments are known for. Each includes extensive freshwater pools, fountains, and waterpark elements along side of some of the largest marine aquariums and interactive dolphin facilities in the world.

• Schlitterbahn Galveston (Summer 2006): Newly opened for the 2006 season the 15 acre Schlitterbahn Galveston Park was completed, Design through Construction, in less than 12 months. The park continues the success of other Schlitterbahn parks by connecting the pools, slides, and play features with a river system creating the “Endless Ride”. The park also includes an industry first Convertible Waterpark area for indoor/outdoor year round use. CLOWARD H2O provided site civil engineering, water treatment and circulation, Structural and electrical systems for all pools, slides and water features.
