Reference Letters and creating your

story for scholarship applications

Page 10: Scholarship Meeting #3 - Surrey Schools

Reference Letters You should always allow at least 2 WEEKS for your reference to write you

a strong reference letter

Provide your reference with as many details as possible about your academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, leadership, and volunteer opportunities

Make the writing experience as easy as possible for your reference

Read the instructions carefully on each scholarship application!!! If they have a specific committee responsible for the selection you should provide this to your reference so they can properly address their letter

Confirm if they want online PDF reference letters or hard copy letters inside an envelope

Creating your Story for Scholarship Applications

• Make your story stand out! Include the following…Your motivation Your issue/conflict/something you’ve overcome Your solution Your success (refer back to how you learnt through the process)

• Draw upon the reader’s empathy

• What did you learn? What have you overcome? How did your hardships make you better?

Scholarship winners all stand out for one reason - they have an amazing sense of who they are because they have spent the time to analyze their

lives and understand why they act the way they do.
