As one of the nation’s largest college financial aid programs in the
country, the Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program is one of the
major scholarship programs nationally that specifically assists high
school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives.
The National Scholarship Program is awarded to eligible students in
all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. National
Scholars receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. during
the spring of their senior year to participate in the National Scholars
Conference.
To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger National Scholarship,
applicants must meet the following criteria: Be enrolled full time as
a high school senior in the United States; be progressing normally
toward graduation in spring/summer of 2016 with plans to enter a college in the United States no later than the fall following graduation
Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a
bachelor’s degree at an accredited non-profit public or private

foundation funds programs that foster high-quality public education
and childhood health, and improve the economic stability of families
living in poverty. Not affiliated with Dell, Inc., the computer

Dell Scholars receive $20,000 to continue their higher education
over the course of six years. The Foundation awards 300
scholarships annually and since 2004, has provided students with

SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST RULES
The contest is open to all students currently in grades 6-
11 who will attend in the 2016-17 academic year a
Catholic school located in the Diocese of Buffalo.
All scholarship applicants must submit an essay on the
following topic:
St. Thomas More was known as "A Man for All
Seasons". During his life he was a scholar, an author, a
lawyer, a politician, a teacher, a husband and a father. In
all of his activities, he was motivated and guided by the
unfailing moral compass in his life, his Catholic faith.
Identify someone that you consider to be a modern St.
Thomas More and explain why you chose that person and
what makes that person a modern day St. Thomas More.
The essay must be typed. The maximum length of the
essay is 500 words.
The application must accompany the essay. The current
grade of the student should be placed in the upper right
hand corner of the first page of the essay. The essay must
not contain the writer’s name or school.

The Voice of Democracy Program is open to students in grades 9-12
(on the Nov. 1 deadline), who are enrolled in a public, private or
parochial high school or home study program in the United States
and its territories.
• The deadline for submissions for the 2015-2016 program is
November 1, 2015.
• The theme for 2015-2016 is: “My Vision For America”
• Students should record their reading of the draft to a CD.
The recording can be no shorter than 3 minutes and no
longer than 5 minutes (plus or minus 5 seconds).
• Entries begin at the Post level. Once the student creates their
essay and completes burning the audio version to a CD, they
can submit their typed version, CD and the Voice of
Democracy entry form to their local participating VFW Post
by the November 1 deadline.
JUDGING CRITERIA:
Originality is worth 30 points: Treatment of the theme
should show imagination and human interest.
Content is worth 35 points: Clearly express your ideas in an
organized manner. Fully develop your theme and use
transitions to move smoothly from one idea to the other.
