Summary of Available Scholarships 2018Century College Foundation Scholarships

The Century College Foundation awards over 100 scholarships totaling to deserving students each year.

You may apply for more than one scholarship but only one will be awarded.

The application process is online only. Applicants must create an account online and gather the required materials to apply.

Once you have all the materials required, upload them with your online scholarship application and submit online before

April 1, 2018.

Scholarship Guidelines • You may apply for multiple scholarships but can only be awarded one. If you are in the top ranking position for

more than one scholarship, you will receive the scholarship with the higher dollar award.• To receive a scholarship, you must be in good academic standing.

• You must meet all of the criteria stated in the scholarship profile in order to apply.

• You must submit at least one written letter of recommendation and provide all requested information as indicated in the criteria for each scholarship for which you wish to apply.

• You may reapply each year for scholarships even if you were a previous recipient.

• The term “credits” refers to those earned by the end of spring semester in the current academic year or as stated in the criteria.

• If you are awarded a scholarship, you must sign an acceptance letter agreeing to the terms of the scholarship and write a thank you letter to the donor before funds will be released, and you will be invited to attend the scholarship awards banquet in the fall of the year of your scholarship award.

PurposeTo encourage education for adults age 30 or older who have demonstrated aptitude and desire for higher education, career development, life enrichment, and/or self-sufficiency.

Adult Students Barbara Ann Hoff Memorial ScholarshipPurposeTo pay tribute to Barbara Ann Hoff, a loving and caring single mom and Century College employee for 19 years, by supporting single parents who are striving to overcome life’s obstacles while pursuing careers.

PurposeTo encourage and support a single parent who has financial need, is highly motivated and shows promise in their pursuit of an education.

Adult Students Kathy DeShane Scholarship PurposeTo pay tribute to the memory of Kathy DeShane, one of Century College’s original staff members for over 32 years, by continuing her belief and practice in paying it forward by helping returning students who are in extreme financial need.

To pay tribute to Stefanie Dojka Loupe, a dedicated Century College English instructor for 19 years, by supporting the educational goals of nontraditional/returning students who show promise in their English courses and who may need financial assistance to pursue their education.

PurposeEstablished by the White Bear Unitarian Universalist church to provide opportunities to adults seeking an education in order to earn a living wage.


Criteria• Applicant must have successfully completed 6 College credits.

• Applicant will be enrolled for a minimum of six credits during each semester the award is received.

• Applicant must submit a personal letter outlining personal goals and education objectives.

• Applicant should be enrolled or taking prerequisites for a two-year program that will enable them toearn a living wage upon completion;

• Applicant must submit at least one letter of recommendation from a Century College instructor oradministrator, current or former supervisor, or community mentor;

Buerkle Memorial ScholarshipPurposeEstablished by Mary Buerkle-Grant and John Grant in remembrance of William Buerkle’s entrepreneurial spirit and love of the automobile industry, to encourage students from the White Bear Lake community pursuing automotive related studies at Century.

PurposeTo encourage and support students interested in pursuing a career in the Business or Finance area.


Criteria

• Applicant is enrolled at Century College for a minimum of 6 credits during each semester the award isreceived;

• Applicant must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher during each semester the award isreceived;

• Applicant submits a personal essay that declares an interest in the study of business or financeoutlining personal goals and education objectives;

• Applicant can be either a high school graduate or a current Century College student;

• Applicant submits at least one letter of recommendation from a teacher or former teacher, a Century College instructor, community member, or a current or former employer.

Business Ritt Family Foundation Scholarship

PurposeTo encourage high school students or returning adults who have an interest in obtaining a degree in business to attend Century College prior to transfer to a four-year program.


Criteria

• Applicant has a 3.0 GPA or higher in high school or in previous college courses and submits a copy of an academic transcript to support this;

• Applicant registers for at least twelve credits at Century College during each semester the award isreceived;

• Applicant enrolls in business-related courses with emphases that will lead to a degree in BusinessAdministration, Marketing, Accounting, Advertising, etc.;

• Applicant maintains a GPA of 3.0 or higher during each semester the award is received;

• Applicant’s personal letter outlines future goals and explains the need for financial assistance.

Career and Technical CenterPoint Energy/ Home Service Plus Scholarship

Purpose

To encourage and support a student at Century College who is pursuing either an AAS degree in HVAC-R Technology or HVAC-R Technician diploma. The specialty of the HVAC-R technician is the installation, repair and maintenance of heating, cooling, ventilation and refrigeration equipment in both residential and commercial applications.

To empower students to overcome obstacles and barriers that limit their chances for success and their access to higher education.

• Applicant is enrolled at Century College in a building trades area: HVAC, solar, pre-engineering,welding, or area that would be utilized by a contractor;

• Applicant attends or has been accepted for admission to Century College with a highschool or college GPA of at least 2.5;

• Applicant’s personal letter explains the obstacles or barriers that could potentially limit his/herchances for success and how this scholarship would assist in overcoming these issues;

• Applicant submits two (2) letters of recommendation from an instructor or administrator and from a community organization or organization representative;

Purpose

To pay tribute to John W. Dalton, founder of Century’s Cosmetology Program, by supporting the educational goals of highly motivated students dedicated to the field of cosmetology.

Purpose

To encourage and support the educational goals of students dedicated to obtaining a degree in Dental Assisting.

PurposeEstablished by Mark Vukelich’s wife and daughters, in honor of his positive and encouraging nature, his generosity of spirit, and in memory of him and of his mother, Sophie “Dolla,” to provide a scholarship to a student with financial need who shows promise in their career and educational pursuits.

• Applicant is a graduate of Stillwater High School-District #834 or a resident of the Stillwater area and includes this information in the personal letter;

• Applicant is a beginning or returning student at Century College. If a returning student, applicant has a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher;

Emmanuel Ogbebor was someone who put a smile on people’s faces. He was driven to make a difference in people’s lives through his profession as a nurse. He loved education and was a graduate of Century College. His generosity of spirit led him to donate a kidney to a stranger. He was not only kind, he was also filled with joy and humor. Sadly he passed away when only 29 years old. This scholarship was created in his honor by the people who worked with him. It is their hope that the student who receives this scholarship will be inspired by the caring legacy of Emmanuel.

Special Faculty Association Scholarship

Purpose

To support the educational goals of students taking summer courses.

Amount

TBD @ $ 500 for summer tuition

Criteria

• Must be enrolled in at least 3 credits for summer.

• Must have completed at least 6 credits at Century College with a GPA of at least 2.5 cumulative GPA.

• Student must not be on academic probation or warning.

• Must write a brief (500 word) essay explaining how taking this course or courses fit with theireducation/career plan.

• At least one recommendation letter must be written by a Century College faculty.

Special Jenna Ann Fredrickson Memorial Scholarship

Purpose

To encourage and support a student at Century College who has dealt with mental health and/or substance abuse problems or issues. Jenna grew up in White Bear Lake, MN and graduated from WBLHS. She was creative, with a sense of humor while being adventurous. Her interests included reading, writing, animals, and nature. The scholarship is sponsored by her family who remember her for her spirit, courage, and love of life.

Special Harold Johnson Scholarship PurposeTo encourage students who are from Pine County and may have graduated from a high school in Pine County or Northern communities in Minnesota to attend Century College.


Criteria

• Applicant has or will graduate from a high school located in Pine County, Hugo, Center City, or other Northern communities;

• Applicant ranks in the top one-third of his/her high school classand submits an official high school transcript to verify;

• Applicant maintains a GPA of 2.8 or higher during each semesterthe award is received;

• Applicant submits at least one letter of recommendation from a high school counselor, instructor, or community member;

• Applicant will be enrolled at Century College for a minimum of 6credits during each semester the award is received;

• Preference will be given to previous recipients.

Special Kopp TRiO Scholarship

PurposeTo encourage current/past participants in Federal TRiO programs, including Upward Bound, Student Support Services, and Educational Talent Search, to pursue their college education.

Amount TBD @ $1,500 prorated between fall and spring semesters

Criteria

• Applicant has been accepted for admission to Century College;

• Applicant has a high school or college cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher and submits an official highschool transcript, if applicable;

• Applicant has successfully participated in one of the pre-collegiate TRiO programs for at least twoyears or Student Support Services for at least one year;

• Applicant submits documentation of accomplishing TRiO program personal and academic goals;

• Applicant submits two (2) recommendations from a TRiO program staff and from a teacher or counselor;

• Applicant is enrolled at Century College for a minimum of six credits during each semester the award is received.

Special Mary Lou Mardaus Skramstad Scholarship

PurposeTo help a student who has been in foster care succeed in college.

Amount 1 @ $1,000 pro-rated prorated between fall and spring semesters

Criteria

• Applicant can be either a high school graduate or a current Century College students who has lived infoster care at some time in his/her life;

• Applicant is enrolled at Century College for a minimum of 6 credits during each semester the award isreceived; and

• Applicant must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher during each semester the award isreceived; and

• Applicant submits a personal essay outlining personal goals and educational objectives; and

• Applicant submits at least one letter of recommendation from a former teacher, Century College instructor, or community member.

Special Mohamad Anwar TRIN Scholarship

PurposeTo help reduce expenses for two (2) students or alumni of Century College’s TRIN program in attending the annual International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) conference.

Amount2 @ $500 for a total of $1,000, to be reimbursed after attending the IMIA conference

Criteria• Applicants must be accepted into Century College’s TRIN program, or graduated with a degree from

Century College’s TRJN program. If a candidate is a first semester student, they need to be enrolled inTRIN 1041;

• Applicants must submit a recording which describes why they seek to attend the conference;• Applicants must agree to share about their experience at the conference with other current or

prospective Century College TRIN students (such as via an interview or article).

Special Paw Boh Htoo Memorial Scholarship

PurposeIn honor of Paw Boh Htoo, a Century College student, active member of the Karen community, and mother of two, who was tragically killed while attempting to intervene in a neighbor’s domestic assault, to encourage and support students of diverse cultural backgrounds who are the first in their family to attend or graduate from college to achieve educational success.

Special SSS/TRiO Scholarship

PurposeTo encourage Century College students participating in the SSS/TRiO program to continue their education towards a bachelor’s degree


Criteria• Applicant is a first generation college student (both parents do not have a bachelor’s degree) who is

planning to complete a bachelor’s degree immediately after attending Century College.

• Applicant is or will be enrolled fulltime (12 or more credits) at Century College during each semesterthat the award is received.

• Applicant must submit a short statement explaining academic and career goals.

• Applicant submits a copy of an Academic Plan developed with and signed by the SSS/TRIO Counselorwhich is allied with the applicants stated goals.

• Applicant submits two (2) recommendations, one from an instructor and one from an SSS/TRIO staff member.

• Applicant is a current Century College student who has completed 10 or more MNTC credits with a3.0 or higher MNTC GPA and has satisfactorly completed a college-level math class.

STEM William J. Nielsen Memorial Scholarship

Purpose

To support the educational goals of motivated students who are preparing for a career in engineering.

• Applicant has completed or is enrolled in at least 3 pre-engineering courses, such as Math, Physics,or Chemistry.

STEM Mathematics ScholarshipPurposeTo recognize students for past academic achievement in mathematics and to support their continued pursuit of mathematics and/or mathematics-related fields.


Criteria• Applicant has completed 16 credits at Century College with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher;

• Applicant meets the following requirements: - Completion of Math 1061 or higher level course at time of application;- Minimum grade of B in each mathematics course taken at Century College; - Cumulative GPA in mathematics courses of 3.25 or higher with a B or better in the last college-level

mathematics course;

• Applicants who rank among the top 25% of students at Century College in at least one round of theStudent Mathematics League Contest, sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges and given twice each academic year, will receive preference;


• Applicant submits two (2) letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a CenturyCollege mathematics instructor.

STEM Dr. Tamlin Olson Memorial Scholarship

PurposeTo encourage and support students pursuing math or science at Century College. Tamlin Olson received his PhD from Purdue University in soil physics. He worked for the USDA, serving as a regional director at the time of his death. The scholarship is sponsored by his family who remember him for his courage, encouragement, and support.


Criteria• Applicant must be a student who will be entering his/her second

year of classes and has declared his/her intention to get a degree in math or science;

• Applicant will be enrolled at Century College for a minimum of sixcredits during each semester the award is received and maintainsa cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher;

• Applicant must write a personal letter that states academic andcareer goals;

• Applicant must submit at least one recommendation from aninstructor at Century College or community member;

• Preference will be given to a student with financial need;

• Preference will be given to female applicants.

STEM George S. Hill Scholarship

Purpose

Established by George S. Hill’s siblings, in honor of his 70th birthday, to encourage and support students studying in one of the STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) to pursue a career in one of these fields.

Purpose

The Simmons STEM Scholarship was established to support students studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) courses, encouraging them to pursue a career in one of these fields.

Purpose

To provide a scholarship to a Minnesota high school junior or senior with declared interest in pursuing a technology oriented career pathway who meets the criteria outlined below.

Teaching Gladys Dickey Scholarship

Purpose

To honor Gladys Dickey, a lifelong educator, by encouraging students to enter the field of education.Gladys Dickey was born in Iowa in 1888 and by 1911 had completed the two year course at Harris Teachers College in Saint Louis, Missouri. She began her lifelong career as an elementary school teacher in 1912. She loved children and children’s literature. Her enthusiasm for the stories of early American history was contagious. She touched so many lives and enriched them all, not only of her pupils, but of her nephews and nieces as well who hope that this scholarship, named in her honor, will enable others to follow her example.


Criteria• Applicant has been enrolled in Century College for at least two semesters

and has completed at least 12 credits in college-levelor developmentalcourses;

• Applicant has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher;• Applicant’s personal letter indicates intent to become a teacher and

demonstrates financial need;• Applicant submits two (2) letters of recommendation, one from a college instructor or

administrator and also from a current or former employer or community representative;• Applicant will be enrolled at Century College for a minimum of six credits during each semester the

award is received.

Teaching Larry Litecky Legacy Scholarship Purpose To encourage and support the educational goals of those aspiring to teach at any level.

Dr. Larry Litecky served as president of Century College from 2000-2011. Under his leadership the campus experienced dynamic growth and change. Enrollment more than doubled, building projects resulted in a new science/library building, a technology center, a renovated West campus, a connecting bridge between the two campuses, and more. New initiatives to support student success resulted in Century College’s rise to becoming the first college in Minnesota selected for the national Achieving the Dream program, as well as winning a number of prominent awards.

Dr. Litecky believed in the power of Century’s teachers. This scholarship supports the educational goals of those aspiring to teach at the post-secondary level, especially in the community colleges.

PurposeTo recognize students interested in the pursuit of public policy and/or teaching.


Criteria• Applicant has completed 12 credits at Century College with a

cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher;• Applicant is enrolled at Century College for a minimum

of six credits during each semester the award is received;• Applicant’s personal letter details the principles and

values shared with Paul and/or Sheila Wellstone;• Applicant submits at least one

recommendation from a college instructor or administrator.

Transfer AAUW Northeast Metro Branch Scholarship Purpose

To encourage students to seek four-year degrees.

Veterans Colonel Phillip L. Potter Scholarship for VeteransPurposeAmerican Legion Post 566 in Lino Lakes, MN is proud to partner with Century College and offer the Colonel Phillip L. Potter scholarship for Veterans that are continuing their college education.

Amount1 @ $1,000 scholarship, prorated over fall and spring semesters

Criteria• Applicants must be either honorably discharged or currently serving members of any branch of the

United Stated Armed Forces (Must submit DD Form 214, NGB Form 22, or a memorandum from applicant’s commander if still serving);

• All Veterans are eligible to apply for the scholarship, but priority will be given to applicants that fallinto the following;– Enrolled members of American Legion Post 566 that are in good standing– Residents of Lino Lakes, Circle Pines, Centerville, Lexington, and Blaine– Combat Veteran (as defined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs)

Veterans Tango Mike Veterans Orthotic and ProstheticPurposeTo foster veteran students who want to pursue an orthotic and prosthetic career pathway.


Criteria• Applicant has been granted an honorary discharge from the United States Armed Forces;

• Applicant is currently enrolled (or will be enrolled) in an orthotic or prosthetic program with a minimumof 12 credits per semester;

• Applicant’s personal letter must demonstrate that he/she is committed to achieving academic successwhile in pursuit of acquiring an orthotic or prosthetic degree;

• Applicant must submit at least one letter of recommendation from a practitioner or educator in the orthotic and prosthetic field or from a former military unit supervisor.

Veterans Sherman Family Scholarship

Purpose

To encourage and support a Century student who is a military veteran or currently serving in the U.S. armed forces. The Sherman Family Scholarship shall be a $500 annual cash grant scholarship.

It is given in memory of Daniel W. Sherman Jr. who served in WWII as a B24 bomber pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corp.
