Grants- Money you don’t pay back, determined by your family’s financial need • The greater your family’s financial need, the more likely you are to receive

grants.Loans- Money you pay the government back, with interest after you have left school

• Subsidized Loans are better: You don’t start accruing interest on your loan until after you have left school

• Unsubsidized Loans start accruing interest as soon as you accept them.Scholarships- Money you don’t pay back, determined by your family’s financial need and/or your academics

• College-specific scholarships (example: Husky Promise at UW)• General scholarships (example: Lindbergh Memorial Scholarship): Non-

college specific.

Government• The federal government is the largest source of need-based gift aid, primarily in

the form of the Pell Grant

– Pell Grant – doesn't have to be repaid • The amount depends on: financial need, costs to attend school, status as

a full-time or part-time student, and plans to attend school for a full academic year or less

• State governments - fund grants and scholarships for residents attending college in their state

• To receive grants: File the FAFSA
