Principal’s Message : Principals Message: Research shows that students need to learn more than just facts if they want to succeed in post secondary education and the world of work. Ontario's students are also learning to take initiative, work independently, be self-reliant and work in a team. Schools are teaching critical thinking and problem solving skills in order to give your child the ability to seize every opportunity for jobs and growth in the new knowledge economy. The report card reflects this and emphasizes the importance of learning skills and work habits in your childs progress. When evaluating subject areas, as always, teachers look at assignments, tests, presentations, and projects for evidence that your child is learning the curriculum. This learning means more than just knowing the facts. Students must also show an understanding of what they are studying by communicating and applying what they have learned. All assessments are reviewed with special attention given to the quality of work at the end of a unit of study or term. Teachers do not simply calculate averages. As well as looking at tests or assignments, they also talk to and observe your child in the classroom to gather as much information as possible before making a decision on the final grade. There are two distinct feedback sections to be returned to school: one each for student comments and parent comments. The report card which will be sent home on February 15th is a checkpoint in your childs learning and should be understood as just that. There is always room to grow and opportunity to learn. The communication of achievement, next steps, and learning for your child is always a partnership between school and home. Set goals together and always ensure that your child is part of the conversation. Parents are encouraged to contact their childs teacher at any time throughout the year when there are questions or concerns. Principal’s Message :

Principal’s Message:

Research shows that students need to learn more than just facts if they want to succeed in post secondary education and the world of work. Ontario's students are also learning to take initiative, work independently, be self-reliant and work in a team. Schools are teaching critical thinking and problem solving skills in order to give your child the ability to seize every opportunity for jobs and growth in the new knowledge economy. The report card reflects this and emphasizes the importance of learning skills and work habits in your child’s progress.

The report card which will be sent home on February 15th is a checkpoint in your child’s learning and should be understood as just that. There is always room to grow and opportunity to learn. The communication of achievement, next steps, and learning for your child is always a partnership between school and home. Set goals together and always ensure that your child is part of the conversation. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher at any time throughout the year when there are questions or concerns.

Triple P Tip of the Month ~ FEBRUARY ~ Being Bullied

Most children will experience bullying at some time in their life. Bullying is usually hidden from adults and can be a traumatic experience that can affect your child’s self-esteem.

KEY STEPS: If bullying is occurring, take action right away Talk to the adults in charge of the place where the bullying occurs Calmly listen to your child and find out exactly what has been happening Summarize the problem and tell your child possible reasons for bullying Ask your child’s opinion on how to deal with the problem Act out the solution with your child before they try it out If bullying occurs at school, make sure the school is aware of the problem

Did you know??? Groundhog Day Groundhog day is an annual holiday celebrated on February 2nd. It is held in the US and Canada. According to folklore, if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day fails to see its shadow, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If, on the other hand the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow and winter will continue for six more weeks! BELL LET’S TALK DAY AT SCHOMBERG PUBLIC SCHOOL

January 31st

Many people living with a mental illness report that

negative stereotypes about mental illness, and the resulting potential for discrimination, causes them more suffering than the illness itself. As a result, two thirds of those suffering from mental illness are too afraid to seek the help that they need. Mental illness affects people of all ages and from all walks of life. It can take many forms, including depression, anxiety and schizophre-nia. Most individuals find ways to live with their illnesses but how they are treated by others of-ten proves to be more of a challenge than the illness itself. That’s why we are joining the conversation around mental health On “Bell Let’s Talk Day”, Jan-uary 31. Stigma surrounded many diseases in the past, but concerted efforts to confront these attitudes resulted in change for the better, including better treatment, more funding for research, and greater understanding from family, friends and colleagues. The goal is to achieve the same level of acceptance and understanding regarding mental illness. At Schomberg Public School our staff will engage in age appropriate talk/discussions around Mental Health with our students in the coming days. In addition, we will address this topic at our next Good News Assembly on January 31

st.

Join us as we work together to break down the stigma that surrounds mental illness.

Building Self Regulation Skills An important life skill is to be on time. From time to time, things happen and let’s face it life can be busy and you

might be running late. However, if this is happening more than once a term and the result is your child being late

for school, it might be a problem.

10 Things to Consider

1) Routine is important.

2) Habits are learned early and good habits will help students achieve their goals later in life.

3) Students who are late often feel unsettled and unsure of themselves when theirs peers have started the day

without them.

4) Teachers and students are distracted by late entries.

5) Report Cards reflect absences and lates which often in turn effect learning and grades.

6) Learning and school matters. Being prepared and ready to learn supports that belief.

7) The sense of being rushed can lead to feelings of being anxious. We can’t learn when we are anxious.

8) Being on time shows respect.

9) Being on time shows responsibility.

10) We are all in this together and both school and home need to support student success.

about taking children on vacation, we ask that

you notify the office in writing with the timelines

of your holidays. Please also let the main office

your child, and if someone else will be looking

After school – time to get active!

Children need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily to live healthier, happier lives. Most children spend their after school time sitting and playing video or computer games, watching television or read-ing. Try these tips to get your kids active after school: Get outside with your kids Use active modes of travel such as walking and cycling as much as possible Restrict television viewing and video/computer games during the after school period Encourage children to participate in sports or intramural activities after school Research available programs from your local Parks and Recreation Depart-ment Help children find activities that they enjoy and suit their abilities

For more information on physical activity visit york.ca/physicalactivity This material is provided by York Region Public Health.
