T HE F RIENDS S CHOOL S CHOOL A WARDS Behavioural Studies Prize Awarded to a student who excels in both Psychology and Sociology. The prize is awarded from a donation provided by the McCartney family, and the recipient receives a book voucher. Wendy Chapman Award An annual award for the Clemes student who consistently displays sensitivity to the needs of others in the School community. It is named after Wendy Chapman, who taught at Friends’ between 1964 and 1970, and 1974 and 1999. Wendy was known for her warmth and the care she demonstrated towards students and staff. The Mona Chepmell Award Awarded for Instrumental and Vocal Tuition, the Mona Chepmell Award was established in 1988 and recognises outstanding contributions to the musical life of the School. It is for students from Years 3 to 12 and covers a proportion of the cost of instrumental or vocal tuition over four terms. Mona Chepmell was a well-known mezzo soprano in Tasmania who attended The Friends’ School for 10 years, which she described as the happiest of her life. Awarded to a student who excels in both Psychology and Sociology. The prize is awarded from a donation provided by the McCartney family, and the recipient receives a book voucher.

WendyChapmanAward

An annual award for the Clemes student who consistently displays sensitivity to the needs of others in the School community. GertrudeClemesAward

Awarded annually for Service based on Quaker ideals in remembrance of Gertrude Clemes, the wife of William Clemes, Headmaster of Clemes College. Nominations for the award are received from staff, and particularly the K-12 Service Coordinator.

RayGreenSpeakingPrize

Awarded late in Term 1 each year to a student who has excelled in public speaking in honour of Ray Green. The prize was established by his parents in 1944, following his death in 1943 during an Air Force training exercise. Ray Green commenced at Friends’ in 1925 at five years of age. He participated in the School Lecturette and School Annual Literary Society Competitions every year and was often successful. The honour board for this prize hangs at Clemes.

PeterJonesPeacePrize

Established in 2016, this prize honours the Quaker Peace Testimony and Friends’ long-serving Teacher of Humanities Peter Jones. It is presented in response to a reflective piece of writing inspired by a provided theme.

OldScholars’AwardforLeadership

The male recipient of this award is voted by students and has their name inscribed on the honour board that hangs at Clemes.

OldScholars’PerformingArtsPrize

Awarded to a student for outstanding contribution to the performing arts in Years 11 and 12.

NancyReardonAward

This award is given in remembrance of Nancy, a vital and energetic Friends’ teacher who loved games and sport. She was Mistress in Charge of Games and Physical Culture from July 1936 to 1939, an accomplished athlete and the first Tasmanian ever to be appointed to the All-Australian basketball (netball) team in 1939. She stroked the Tasmanian Women’s Crew in five Australian Championships, winning four. This annual award takes the form of a Cup bearing the recipient’s name and is displayed in the Palfreyman foyer. It is awarded for Service to Girls’ Sport.

ClariceRogersAwardforLeadership

The female recipient of this award is voted by students and has their name inscribed on the honour board that hangs at Clemes.

ClariceTeggAward

This award was introduced in 1997 and donated by Graeme Lindridge. It is named after his mother and awarded for outstanding work in musical composition.

JeanYeatesAward

Like the Nancy Reardon Award, the Jean Yeates award is a cup bearing the recipient’s name displayed in the Palfreyman foyer. It is awarded for service to boys’ sport and is named after Jean who served the School for 30 years.

The recipients of the Nancy Reardon and Jean Yeates Awards are determined by staff on the Sports Committee.

JeanYeatesWritingPrize

An award sponsored by the Old Scholars’ Association the Jean Yeates Writing Prize is awarded at the beginning of Term 4 each year in memory of Jean, who joined the School staff in 1950. She had a passion for the English language and is remembered for her teaching of the classic novels and great poetry to enthralled classes. She served The Friends’ School for 30 years, many of which were in the role of Senior Mistress. The recipient of this prize is determined by Year 11 and 12 staff.

MartinZochlingAward

Awarded to a male Year 12 student in recognition of academic endeavour, contribution to sport and commitment to the School. This award is in remembrance of Martin Zochling, an Old Scholar described as a ‘very pleasant young man – unfailingly polite, cooperative and friendly’. Martin was an enthusiastic sportsman, involved in basketball, badminton, tennis, soccer, football, athletics, rowing and rugby union. He died in 1989 at the age of 20.

The recipient of the award receives a cash prize donated by Martin’s parents in his honour.
