EARLY CHILDHOOD SCHEMATIC DESIGN


EARLY CHILDHOOD COMMITMENTS

»  Cohesion and equity among all Early Childhood Programs. »  Rooms are to be designed to accommodate the populations they are

intended to serve. »  Safe, clean, welcoming, natural-light-filled spaces. »  Colorful, fun vibrant, and overall engaging spaces. »  Facility designed to be easily maintainable. »  Facility is to be prepared for planned future expansion. »  Flexible designs to accommodate Community and/ or Family Education

use outside of regular hours. »  Classrooms shall be zoned to accommodate different learning and

teaching methods.


EARLY CHILDHOOD CRITERIA

»  The design shall designate one main Early Childhood entry.

»  Pick-up and drop-off should be located at the Main Entry of the Early Childhood Center, and shall include

adjacent parking for parents with strollers. Stroller parking near the main entry shall also be provided.

»  Parent and Bus drop-off locations are to be separate.

»  The design shall incorporate a Parent Commons located near the main entry.

»  The design shall incorporate a formal nurse’s station that is located at the main office and is sized

appropriately to serve all of Early Childhood.

»  Classrooms should be universal in design, but customizable to accommodate appropriate age groups.

»  The design shall include conference/ meeting rooms that will serve as spaces for child screening. These

spaces are to be located on the first floor nearby the main entry and be available on the weekend.



»  The design shall include one main Teacher Center located central to all Early Childhood Programs, as well

as several smaller Resource Spaces dispersed throughout the facility.

»  The design shall include small group spaces in the 2-3 year old and 4-5 year old cluster for assessment and

parent discussion.

»  The design shall incorporate an additional Multi-Purpose/ Activity Space similar to the Family Center

Gymnasium.

»  Multi-Purpose/ Activity spaces are to be located in reasonable proximity to age group clusters 18-23 months,

2-3 years, and 4-5 year olds.

»  The Early Childhood Center Based Special Education Program is to be centrally located.

»  A “self regulation room” should be provided central to all classrooms with the ability to use a swing in the

space.



»  A calming room should be provided for sensory reset with appropriate lighting and should be central to all

classrooms.

»  The design shall provide for two child restrooms per every two classrooms, which shall include changing

stations.

»  The design shall provide additional adult restrooms.

»  The design shall incorporate changing/ diapering spaces dispersed throughout the facility so that all age

group clusters have equal access. Restrooms are also to be located within reasonable proximity to the

Parent Education Rooms.

»  The organization/ room sequencing of the Early Childhood Center shall be intuitive.

»  Classrooms are to be clustered together by age group. (Birth-18 months, 18-23 months, 2-3 year olds, and

4-5 year olds, with incorporation of ECSE students.)



»  Parent education / resource rooms are to be provided at each classroom cluster age group.

»  The design shall formally separate the woodshop from the Early Childhood spaces to make the Early

Childhood Center secure.

»  The Speech and OT offices are to be located near the classrooms.

»  The psychologist and social worker offices are to be located near the main office.

»  The design shall incorporate a designated motor room with durable walls to hang equipment from. The motor

room shall also incorporate adjacent storage.

»  Rooms with windows shall be designated for students wherever possible.
