School Council What is a school council and what does it do?

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the broad direction of a school in accordance with their constituting Order and the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.

Why is parent membership so important?

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help inform and shape the direction of the school.

Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.

Do I need special experience to be on school council?

Each member brings their own valuable life skills and knowledge to the role. However, councillors may need to develop skills and acquire knowledge in areas that are unfamiliar to them. It is important to have an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future.

We have 3 parent vacancies on School Council to fill. Parent nomination forms are being sent home to families today with the newsletter.

If you would like to be part of this integral part of our school please fill out the form and send it in or just call into school and we will assist you with the paperwork. Please note that forms must be returned to school by 4:00pm on Tuesday, 9 March, 2021.

If you would like to discuss further what is required from School Councillors please talk to Liz, Wayne or Gayle, we are more than happy to explain what is involved. School Council meet twice a term for approximately 1 hour.

Congratulations to one of our past students Ashley Morrison who was recently awarded Royal Perth Hospital’s ‘Graduate Nurse of the Year’ for 2020. Ashley is the middle daughter of our school gardener Deb Farrell. Ashley completed her primary school years at Katunga South before attending St Mary of the Angels for the early part of her secondary school education. She completed secondary school in Western Australia after moving there when she was in year 11. Ashley worked at two jobs while studying for her nursing degree and realised her dreams when she graduated in 2019. Ashley now works as a surgical nurse at the Royal Perth Hospital and according to her mum was surprised and humbled to receive the award, particularly when she is doing a job that she loves. All at Katunga South congratulate Ashley on her award and wish her all the best for the future.
