Welcome to a new school year at Yandina State School. I would like to take this

opportunity to welcome back everyone and to express a warm welcome our

new families.

Our school is looking great

It is always a positive start to have our school looking so clean and tidy. Well done to our

grounds staff who have ensured the school looks great for the year even in this very hot and

dry spell!

School numbers

Our enrolment numbers look strong with 269 students enrolled – Great News! As you are

aware, some classes have started with numbers of students higher than we could predicted

due to the stronger growth in the lower grades of Prep and Year 1. Currently I am working

with Regional Office HR and staff to support the larger classes. We will continue with our cur-

rent class structure for now, but changes may occur with our classes later in the year to cater

for this growth.

New Staff

I would like to welcome Ms Tammy Hazel and Mrs Monica Hurrell to our staff. I have worked

with Ms Hazel before at Mapoon State School where she was a graduate teacher who taught

Prep/1. Monica has transferred into our school from Hopevale State School with glowing

reports. Both teachers bring a great knowledge of the curriculum and a wide range of

experiences. I am very excited to have them here at Yandina State School.

Drop Off Times and Before School Areas

I request that parents and care givers drop off students for school after 8:30am. Bus students

who arrive earlier than this time sit under A Block until they are dismissed. Areas for students

Welcome to the 2017 school year. As partners in education, we endeavour to keep you

informed about your child’s learning throughout the year. Through my role as Head of

Curriculum, I aim to provide items in the newsletter and on the school website that will

inform you about all things curriculum.

At Yandina State School, the teaching and learning that takes place in classrooms is

informed by the guidelines of the Australian Curriculum. For an overview of the Australian

Curriculum, and what your child will typically learn in each year level, take a look at the

information brochures on the ‘Teaching and Learning’ section of our school’s website.

In 2017 we will continue our focus on READING as a school improvement priority. Please

see your child’s teacher to offer support for reading where you can. WRITING will be an

added focus as we strive to improve the quality of writing across the year levels. In

addition, in 2017 we are fortunate as a school to be involved in an action research project

around the teaching of Mathematics run by Professor Merrilyn Goos, head of the School of

Education, University of Queensland. This project is a continuation of work started

throughout the second part of 2016, along with schools in the Noosa and Hinterland cluster,

Gympie and Bundaberg regions. It’s very exciting for us to be part of a project that is

gaining recognition across the nation.

Looking forward to an exciting year in curriculum!

Jason.

Find us on Facebook. Thank you for your

continued support.

P&C Meeting—AGM

The P&C are holding their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday the 21st of March at 5.00pm

in the resource centre. This meeting is when executive roles become vacant and nomina-

tions are accepted. Membership forms for joining the P&C are attached to the back of this

newsletter and will also be available at the meeting. We would love to see some new faces

getting involved in the school community and to see new people become members of our

committee by volunteering for executive positions or signing up to be part of our team. Our

P&C is a great way to be involved in the extra support we provide to our wonderful teachers

and children of Yandina State School. It’s also a wonderful way to meet with other parents

and members of our school community and is very rewarding. If you would like any further

information regarding positions or general membership please contact the P&C at:

[email protected]

Tuckshop

Our amazing Tuckshop ladies are still looking for helpers. You don't need experience to be

helpful. If you can flip pikelets and make jelly, we want you! If you can stay longer, morning

tea and lunch will be provided. If you require further information please go and see Grace

or Kathy in the Tuckshop!

Donations

This month 2MR is the class for donations, however we are always happy to accept dona-

tions from anyone! As it is the start of the new year, supplies definitely need replenishing.

We would love to receive strawberry jam; tomato and BBQ sauce; tinned sliced beetroot;

Cadbury drinking chocolate; milo; dishwashing liquid; plastic teaspoons and forks; and also

garbage bags to fit 50L bins. Any donation, big or small, makes such a huge difference and is

greatly appreciated!

Second Hand Uniforms

Our second hand uniform shop is open every Thursday 8:30am-9:00am, and 2:45-3:15pm. If

anyone else would like to volunteer some time to open the shop another day throughout the

week, please contact the office.

P&C President

Hello Everybody,

My name is Tony Sinclair and I am honoured to be the new Guidance Officer at Yandina State School. Over the past eight years as a Guidance Officer I have serviced many schools in areas around Charleville and Longreach and more recently the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. I was born and educated on the Gold Coast and only left to pursue my dream of being a teacher. My first teaching post was at Coolum State School in 1999. Fortunately enough through teaching I have been able to touch the lives of many and watch the growth, achievements and successes of hundreds of children in my care. Teaching also led me to my wife and for that I am truly thankful. The love of my life gave me three beautiful children Heath, 12 years, William, 10 years and Nova, 6 years. These gifts of life have taught me more than anything about everything. All with their unique personalities and varying characteristics they continue to challenge my every thought. Anyway enough about me, I can’t wait to meet all of you and thank you so much for the generous welcoming I have had into your community.

P.S. I hope you enjoy my first article below about the importance of “Connectedness”.

Feeling Connected at School

When kids feel part of their school community and are cared for by people at their school, they are less likely to get into trouble. They also have higher levels of emotional well-being.

This feeling of belonging, often called “connectedness,” can be especially important during times of stress or when difficult decisions have to be made.

Adults and peers, curricular and extracurricular activities, policies and practices all affect the level of connectedness your child feels at school.

What Is School Connectedness? These are some of the major elements that help kids feel they belong and are cared for at their school:

Teachers who support and care for individual students.

Good friends at school.

Parents and students caring about current and future academic performance.

Discipline policies that are fair and efficient.

Participating in extracurricular activities.

Benefits of Connectedness

Some of the benefits of helping students feel a sense of connectedness to their school community are listed below.

Academic benefits: “Connected” kids are more likely to attend school regularly, pay attention to their grades and

pursue post-secondary education.

Reducing risky behaviour: Students who feel a sense of belonging to the school community are less likely to be

involved in activities such as smoking, alcohol and substance abuse, early sexual activity, drinking and driving, suicide attempts and weapon-related violence.

Mental well-being: Connected kids are less likely to have emotional distress or experience abuse. They are able

to handle stress effectively and are more resilient (that is, they can bounce back from stress).

How Parents Can Help Kids Feel More Connected At School The first step is to recognize the importance of school connectedness in your child’s life and development. Second, use the information in the “What Is School Connectedness?” section above to assess your child’s school situation. As a parent, you can take these steps to influence your child’s level of connectedness:

Attend parent-teacher meetings and get to know all of your child’s teachers through regular conversations.

Be involved with the school. Go on field trips, volunteer and know what is happening at the school.

Get to know your child’s friends and their families, and encourage positive peer relationships.

Talk to your children about their grades and effort, and access resources to help you ensure they are reaching

their potential and taking ownership of their performance.

Discuss the school’s discipline policy with teachers and administrators.

Encourage your child to get involved. Most schools offer a wide variety of extracurricular options, from band to

basketball.

Your child’s sense of belonging to school (connectedness) plays a key role, not only in academic success but also in decreasing risky behaviour and supporting mental well-being.

Talk with your children about how connected they feel at school. Above all, involve yourself in their school lives and be aware of what happens there, both negatively and positively.
