BURSARIES

ABORIGONAL STUDENT BURSARY This award was established in 2015 by Joan McKay in an effort to support aboriginal students in School District 57.

Number of Awards: 3

Amount of Each Award: $1,000.00

Eligibility: Must be a self-identified aboriginal student.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and financial need

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

BEN GUILLIAMSE MEMORIAL BURSARY

This award was established by the Kiwanis Club of Prince George to honour one of their members, Ben Guilliamse. This award will go to a student who has participated in Science Fairs within School District No. 57 and want to pursue a career in the Sciences.

Number of Awards: 1

Amount of Each Award: $500.00

Eligibility: Open to all students in School District No. 57 who want to pursue a career in the Sciences

Criteria: Demonstrate satisfactory academic achievement and financial need

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

Special Conditions: A letter of reference or certificate outlining active involvement in a school Science Fair.

BUCKHORN ELEMENTARY P.A.C. BURSARY

This award is given to a graduating student who attended Buckhorn Elementary School, who intends to pursue a post-secondary education at any recognized educational institution (including Trade School).

Number of Awards: 1

Amount of Each Award: $500.00

Eligibility: Open to students who completed Grade 7 at Buckhorn Elementary and attended Buckhorn Elementary for at least 3 consecutive years including Grade 7.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and is in financial need. Demonstrated volunteer work, participated within the community and/or school events; show leadership qualities with a willingness to help others. Applicants must indicate current career goals.

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

Special Conditions: A letter of reference outlining volunteer work, community/school participation, leadership etc. must accompany application.

CENTRAL BUILDERS’ HOME BUILDING CENTRE BURSARY

Number of Awards: 1

Amount of Each Award: $250.00

Eligibility: Open to students who attend school in the City of Prince George.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and financial need.

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

CHRISTOPHER WATT MEMORIAL BURSARY

This award was established in the fall of 2001 by the Nukko Lake Parent Advisory Council, to honour the memory of Christopher Watt, son of Rob and Bonnie Watt. Christopher’s parents have been members of this community for over 20 years. His father, Rob Watt, has been a teacher at Nukko Lake Elementary School for over 20 years. Christopher Watt attended Nukko Lake. He was known as a “friend to all” and one who welcomed new challenges with the belief “one could succeed”.

Number of Awards: 1

Amount of Each Award: $500.00

Eligibility: Open to students who attended Nukko Lake Elementary School for a minimum of two years.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement, financial need and commitment to self-improvement as evidenced by 2 letters of reference from school district personnel or other involved adults.

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

Special Condition: This award is targeted at students who do not meet exacting academic standards yet demonstrate potential in other areas and a desire to improve their lives.

2 letters of reference as noted above must accompany application.

COLIN McINTOSH MEMORIAL BURSARY

This bursary was established in 2016 in memory, and to honor Colin McIntosh, a former long-term General Manager of Spruce Credit Union. The Colin McIntosh Memorial Bursary is offered, on a rotating basis, to students graduating from secondary schools within the City of Prince George.

Number of Awards: 1

Amount of Each Award: $750.00

Eligibility: Open to students who attend school within the City of Prince George.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement, financial need, and ability to achieve educational goals. Demonstrated leadership or involvement in extra-curricular and/or community activities.

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

Special Conditions: Awards are to be distributed as follows: June 2017 – Duchess Park Secondary School

A letter of reference outlining leadership or involvement in community must accompany application.

Recipients do not have to be members or a son or daughter of a member of the Spruce Credit Union; however, when two students have equal qualifications for the award, preference will be given to a student who is a member or a son or daughter of a member of the Spruce Credit Union.

Corporal Darren James Fitzpatrick was born in Burnaby, raised in Prince George and graduated from Kelly Road Secondary. Darren was the 141st military casualty of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan. He will forever be remembered as the proud Canadian and courageous leader he was. This award was established as a tribute to the brave service of our military troops in the defense of our country and will be awarded to a grade 12 student from School District No. 57 pursuing a career in the Canadian Forces.

This award was established in 1987 to honour the memory of Jack Lunden, an educator in School District No. 57 who contributed much to the education of students, most notably in the area of Special Education. KARL ANDERSON FOUNDATION BURSARY

Karl Anderson left Denmark at an early age as a member of the Danish Navy and made his way to Canada, arriving in the rapidly growing community of South Fort George in 1913. He opened a newsstand opposite the sternwheeler landing in South Fort George. In 1914 Karl moved his store to a permanent building on George Street in the new town site of Prince George. Karl was a member of the Rotary Club of Prince George as well as the Supreme Lodge of the Danish Brotherhood in America. This award is given to male students who intend to pursue a university education.

A.L. FORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This annual scholarship was established in 1995 by Isabel Ford as a memorial for her late husband, A.L. Ford. A.L. Ford was a communications pioneer in Prince George, serving 48 years with CN Telegraph. From the arrival of telegraph services to Prince George to the evolving telecommunications services of the 1970’s, A.L. Ford worked in areas that we now call “information technology”.

This awards was established by family and friends of Bev Hosker. Born in Fort St. John, Bev was a member of the first ever female RCMP troop. She went on to serve 24 years with the RCMP throughout British Columbia. Bev was in integral member of the District Parent Advisory Councils in both Quesnel and Prince George, and a tireless advocate for the rights of students and parents. She was a particularly strong believer in the need to increase the numbers of young women pursuing studies in math and science. This award will go to someone who embodies Bev’s commitment to community and school and plans to pursue further studies in a mathematics related field.

This scholarship was established in 1994 by the Blackburn family who arrived in the Pineview area in the 1920’s. The Blackburn’s have always taken an active role in the community where the first log school was built on their farm land. This scholarship was established by the friends and family of Bryan Johnson, a Prince George businessman. He was a very warm, friendly person with a tremendous zest for life. The purpose of this scholarship is to acknowledge students who are self-motivated and who pursue excellence in their endeavors. Bryan’s untimely death occurred in an avalanche while skiing on Mount Rider, February 4, 1995. He is sadly missed by his wife, family and friends.

This award was established in 2012 to honour the memory of Mrs. Cheryl Jean Fraser, who passed away from breast cancer on September 7, 2011. Mrs. Fraser was a teacher in Prince George area schools for over 30 years at Beaverly, Lakewood Elementary and Kelly Road Secondary School (also as Ms. Hughes). Although Mrs. Fraser primarily taught classes in English, Literature and Journalism, she also enjoyed teaching Mathematics in years before her retirement in 2006.

This scholarship recognizes the many contributions made by John Stevens to public education in Prince George. During his career, John served School District No. 57 (Prince George) as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent. After his retirement, John continued his interest and support of public education through the Education Heritage Committee of the Prince George Retired Teachers' Association and the Springboard to Success Scholarship Committee partnership between the school district and the Prince George Community Foundation. John was a positive man who looked for the best in everyone he met and everything he did. His family and friends established this award in his memory in 2012.

Eligibility: The P.G.D.T.A. shall make available annually eight scholarships. One scholarship shall be awarded to a

student from each of the secondary schools in School District No.57 which register

grade twelve students provided that there are qualified candidates. If there are no candidates from one or more

of the schools, or if a school’s candidates are deemed ineligible either through insufficient qualifications or failure

to meet the eligibility criteria, then those awards shall be made available at large.

A perpetual scholarship was established in 1986 to commemorate the visit to Prince George of their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales. These are endowed funds held by the Prince George Community Foundation.

Special Conditions: Preference will be given to those students who provide a minimum of one and not more than three testimonial letters, record of marks or other support material substantiating each of the three areas of achievement:

a) Citizenship in school and community

b) Involvement and achievement in Art, Dance, Drama, Music or Speech Arts

c) Academic achievement

Support letters are expected to be very specific to each of the areas of achievement.

The University of Northern British Columbia also agrees to match the $2,500 (tuition waiver) for this award upon the recipients’ enrollment and attendance in any UNBC program.

RALPH SCOTT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Ralph Scott was a well-respected member of the Prince George community. He appreciated the value of education but was also aware of the need for practical knowledge. This award was established in 2000 in his honour.

technical/vocational school. This award is based on scholastic achievement. Students must have attended

Mackenzie Secondary School for at least grades 11 and 12 and have a GPA no lower than 3.5, Canadian Citizenship,

as well as proof of acceptance, and registration at a recognized post-secondary institution must be given. This

scholarship must be committed by the upcoming September. An alternate who can meet the criteria may be

substituted in the event that the winner is unable to use this award. In the event of a tie, the scholarship

committee will select the deserving student based on the academic record of the previous two years.
