Covering 90 square miles, School District U-46 serves portions of 11 communities in the
northwest suburbs of Chicago in Cook, DuPage and Kane Counties. The District is
approximately 45 minutes west of downtown Chicago, and the majority of our communities
are easily accessible from major interstates and commuter rail lines.
School District U-46 serves over 41,000 children in grades preK-12. The District ranks as
the second largest in Illinois with 40 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 5 high
schools.

Our students come to the classroom with backgrounds representing over 60 cultures making
our schools rich with ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic diversity, mirroring the global
society to which our students will contribute their skills.
The focus of the District is Academic Success for All. To achieve this bold goal, U-46 staff
operates under the guidance of a District Improvement Plan, which was first adopted by the
Board of Education in 2003-2004. The Plan is designed to transform U-46 into a results-
driven culture that focuses staff time, talents and resources on improving student learning
and provides teachers with better data to determine instructional practices. The School Board
directed that an updated Plan be adopted and implemented annually.
Job Description:
Title: Assistant Superintendent, Elementary Education
Location: Educational Service Center
Effective: July 1, 2012
Reports To: Superintendent of Schools
Job Goal: As the primary representative for the District, the Assistant Superintendent leads curriculum
and instructional practices in all elementary schools for the District with a focus on
dramatically improving student achievement for all students and eliminating the achievement
gaps between students of color and other students. The Assistant Superintendent is
responsible for implementing the District's vision and Board of Education policies in setting
the direction for all elementary schools. The Assistant Superintendent implements effective
instructional programs for elementary schools, conducts observations of the schools, and
assists, advises and evaluates principals. The Assistant Superintendent is also responsible for
handling community concerns regarding elementary schools and for working with
communities to address those concerns.
Key Accountabilities:
• Coaches and mentors elementary principals in the school system; serves as liaison
between principals and the District Superintendent; works with principals to resolve
school-based concerns and problems; assists principals and teachers in creating
maximum student achievement.
• Collaborates with students, teachers, principals, coordinators, directors, business
leaders, consultants and parents, receiving suggestions, advice and general feedback on
the operations of the elementary schools; helps ensure an open line of communication
across the school system hierarchy, bringing insight from all levels to incorporate in
policy and decision making.
• Conducts on-site observations of all elementary schools in the system; provides
feedback, support and suggestions to principals; conducts and documents formal
evaluations of principals.
• Assists principals of elementary schools with decision making and problem solving;
plans and develops programs to be implemented across the elementary schools;
monitors the results of programs implemented; develops policies, standards and a vision
for the elementary schools.
• Publicly responds to concerns of the Community regarding elementary schools;
coordinates with community agencies to address the problems and needs of the
elementary schools and their students.
• Leads the instruction and development team with development and implementation of a
relevant and rigorous curriculum.
• Facilitates the school improvement planning process that defines direction for
improvement.
• Supervises the budgeting process for all instructional departments to insure equitable
resources for all schools.
• Ensures specialized programs are meeting all compliance and procedural standards as developed by
Board policy or federal and state regulations.
• Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of cognitive and physical developmental stages of elementary school children.
• Knowledge of the district policies, procedures and standards regarding elementary education.
• Knowledge of the organization and communication channels of the school system.
• Knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional
organizations and/or federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the field of education
administration.
• Skill in coaching and developing staff.
• Ability to develop long range plans for elementary education.
• Ability to collect and analyze statistical data.
• Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop meaningful reports
from data.
• Ability to improve instruction and close the achievement gap between high and low achieving
students.
• Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing.
• Ability to make oral presentations before large groups.
• Ability to exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the public.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Experience and Education
• Fifteen years of experience in K-12 public education, including supervising principals and other
instructional administrators.
• Administrative experience in a large urban school district.
• Master’s degree in educational administration or related area; Ph.D. preferred.
• Illinois Administrative Certification (Type #75 with general administrative endorsement or
equivalent).
• Illinois Superintendent Endorsement (preferred, not required).
Terms of Employment: 12-month work year
