Dear Parents, Teachers and Friends, Holy Week can be a perplexing time for Christians for it has as its climax the death of their founder and leader, Jesus Christ. The passion story in the Gospel reflects a time of great turbulence. However, Jesus seems to anticipate the moment of his arrest, keeps his dignity before the Jewish Sanhedrin and the Roman tribunal and meets death with great dignity.

After the last supper Jesus and the Apostles went for a walk in the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus asks his apostles to pray with him for awhile. For a brief moment we have a glimpse of Jesus struggling with death, as every human must. He is shaken with cold fear. He reaches out to His friends for support as the terrible finality of death bears down on Him, but they are asleep. Later these friends, numbed by terror and confusion, abandon Him to save themselves. Yet Jesus was able to say His prayer of trust: “Not my will Father, but yours be done.”

Of course, Easter Sunday lessens the perplexity of Holy Week. Similar to the manner in which early members of the Church were able to turn with renewed appreciation as to how their Lord had suffered before He went into His glory, so we in all the ups and downs of our lives are able to likewise look at the events of Holy Week with renewed appreciation. We know that if our faith and trust hold true, death is not the end but the beginning of a new life.

“God, Increase within us the Risen Life we share with Christ. Help us to grow as your people towards the fullness of eternal life with You. Amen”

ST PATRICK’S EVENING THANKS

Thanks to all those who ensured we had a very successful St Patrick’s evening last Saturday. Many contributed to the evening, especially Miss Slattery and the Year 10 group, the P & F and all the parents who brought plates to be shared on the evening. Of course, a special mention must be made of Mr Peter Brooks, who ensured all the lighting, stage etc was set up and packed away at the end of the night.

The following came in on Sunday and ensured most was in order for the start of the week on Monday, Mrs Erica Preston, Mrs Michele Lawer and Mr Gavin Griffiths. Thank you all.

UPCOMING EASTER BREAK Easter, which normally occurs during the end of term break this year, occurs next weekend. As such, there is an extended break for students who finish next Thursday 29th March. School resumes for students on Wednesday, 4th April.

MIDDLE SCHOOL INTERIM REPORT MEETINGS

Last Wednesday, the Middle School Interim Report Meetings were held for parents to gain an insight as to how their children had begun the year. I would like to thank all those parents who took the opportunity to speak with learning area and home room teachers regarding their child’s progress thus far this year. It was very disappointing to find that a number of the parents who were asked to come in for an interview, chose not to, and didn’t reply to the request for an interview. Much time and effort is expended preparing Interim Reports and meetings, and for this effort to be disregarded by some is disappointing, and calls into question these families commitment to their child’s learning and support for our school. God Bless

Year 3—6 News The Year 6 camp is well underway and from the photos we have received it looks like they are having a blast! So far they have

played mini golf, visited the Cathedral and Bishop Michael, been to the Monsignor Hawes museum, made rafts from a variety of materials and I ’m sure had many other fabulous experiences.

Our Year 6 campers will return on Friday filled with fun stories.

Last week we welcomed Riley and Ryan from the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA). A development clinic was held on Tuesday for students in Years One through to Year Eight. The gentlemen were incredibly impressed with the level of skill and participation among the students. The Year Five and Year Six students competed in the all day cricket carnival held at the Festival Grounds on the Friday, along with Carnarvon Christian School and Carnarvon Community College. The students displayed excellent sportsmanship and enthusiasm throughout the entire day. Dayne White won the catching competition that was held at the start of the day and we even had one team come away with a win in their division. Each coach also chose one “MVP” (Most Valued Player) from their team, so congratulations go to Xavier Cox, Paulene Braza, Liam Worthington, Chayse Jackson, Keion Mongoo and Javarn Albert. A huge thank you to our teachers, Carey Hodgson, Patricia Van Dongen, Sue-Lyn Munro, Susanne Aiken and Anthony Narrier, and to our two parent volunteers Shane Ferdinandus and Kym Redden for assisting with coaching, scoring and umpiring all of the games.

OUR ANNIVERSARY

Monday 19th March was the anniversary of the very first day of Catholic School teaching in Carnarvon. The Convent School (as it was known back then) opened for “business” by the Presentation Sisters on 19th March, 1906 with 22 students attending. A St Patrick’s Ball was held on the 16th March to raise funds for the Convent. They raised a whopping 10 pounds 10 shillings (the maths gurus can convert this to today’s $’s).

2018 KINDY AND PRE-KINDERGARTEN

3 YEAR OLD ENROLMENTS

Enrolments for children to begin the Kindy and 3 Year Old Pre-Kindergarten Programme

are currently being taken.

All parents that have children turning

3 years of age between 1st July 2017 and

30th July 2018 are welcome to contact the

school office on 99411 328 for further

information.

iPad Plan for 2018 This year, all students from Years 3 – 5 will be expected to have an iPad for use at school. Students from Year 6 to 10 are still able to use their previously purchased laptops. Over the coming years, iPads will become the preferred device for the school. Our requirements and recommendations for iPads are listed below: No iPad minis. They are too small for our educational purposes and place too much strain

on students’ eyes. Must have a lightning adapter (smaller charging cable). Must handle latest operating system iOS 11 (Microsoft Teams is only compatible with recent

operating systems). Must have at least 64GB of memory. The iPad Air is recommended by the school. Latest model is recommended as it will handle the latest operating system and be more

compatible with future operating systems; therefore, it will last longer. A lifeproof or solid protective case is recommended for Year 3 and 4 students. Year 5 upwards will be expected to have an attached keyboard. These can either be an Apple product or an aftermarket version. Students will also need a set of ear phones.
