HOME/SCHOOL READING LINK At The Jenny Hammond Primary School, we have a home/school reading system which enables parents to play an important role in the development of their child’s reading. An initial meeting is held with the parents when their child joins our school. Children are encouraged to take books home to read daily. Each child has a reading diary where they can share information with their parents and teachers about how they are progressing with their reading. In Key Stage 2 the children are given reading and writing journals rather than the reading diaries and are asked to include an entry in their journals on a weekly basis as part of their homework. These journals are read by the Class Teacher who then writes back to your child. Jenny Hammond book bags can be bought from the school office costing £5.00. (Book Bags and PE bags can be bought together at a reduced cost of £7.50).

HOMEWORK Homework is given in Years 1 to 6 in the form of POWer Projects which relate to their topic. The children have the half term to complete their work before presenting it to their class. The children are also expected to read daily and to learn their spellings. Reading and writing journals are also completed at home on a weekly basis in Key Stage 2 and in the last term of Year 2.

INCLUSION At The Jenny Hammond Primary School we are committed to promoting a teaching and learning environment for all that embeds the values of inclusive educational practices. We aim to ensure that education is accessible and relevant to all our learners through a child-centred approach. This helps to foster an understanding and develop respect for each other and to celebrate diversity and difference. The Inclusion Policy can be found on the school website; a hard copy is available from the school office.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES We want all members of our community to be able to participate in the life of the school and to feel that their contributions are valid. Equal Opportunities are about enabling every person to achieve their highest potential both inside and outside the classroom. This means that teachers are aware of issues of culture, gender, sexuality, language and ability and provide age and ability-appropriate resources, activities and tasks for their pupils which reflect this. We encourage awareness and understanding of each other’s differences and will not accept verbal abuse of any kind, stereotyping, disrespect or physical violence. The Equal Opportunities Policy can be found on the school website; a hard copy is available from the school office.

BULLYING PREVENTION Bullying is not tolerated at The Jenny Hammond Primary School. Ofsted, in May 2017, recognised that there is a highly positive climate for learning across the school and that the adults have high expectations for our children in terms of behaviour and outcomes. There are very few incidents of bullying here and these are always dealt with immediately and are taken very seriously. All children in the school are clear about procedures for reporting bullying and can do so in confidence. A copy of our bullying prevention policy can be found outside the school office and on our school website.

CHILD PROTECTION & SAFEGUARDING The governors and staff at The Jenny Hammond Primary School fully recognise the contribution they make to safeguarding children. We recognise that all staff, including volunteers, have a full and active part to play in protecting our pupils from harm. Our school procedures for safeguarding children are in line with Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures. We wish to work with parents and carers to ensure the best possible care for children, but this may occasionally require situations about which we have cause for concern to be referred to Social Services. Our prime concern is always the well-being of our pupils and if we act it is to protect the individual. Every school is required to have a designated teacher for child protection and at The Jenny Hammond Primary School the Assistant Head Teacher, Diana Williams is the Designated Lead with Andrew Warren, Assistant Head, the Deputy Designated Leads. Any child in need or child at risk of significant harm will be reported to them in the first instance and they will contact MASH, (Multi Agency Support Hub) or Social Services if appropriate. You will always be informed if Social Services have been contacted unless by doing so it is considered to put your child at risk.

All policies relating to safeguarding, including E-Safety, are available from the School Office and can be viewed on the school website.

HEALTH AND SAFETY Our Health and Safety Policy, set out in a separate document, reflects the consideration we give to the protection of our children both within the school environment and when away from the school on trips and visits.

FIRE DRILL Fire drills take place at least once a term, every term. This gives the children, staff and community users the opportunity to practise leaving the school building in a safe, orderly way in the event of an emergency.

COMPLIMENTS AND COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE CURRICULUM In all aspects of school life, we aim to develop an open, sharing, professional dialogue with the families who attend our school. This includes items ranging from curriculum matters to fundraising and social events. If parents are satisfied about our work we like to know. Similarly, if parents are unhappy about any aspect of the school’s work, we need to know. If you wish to share compliments, please speak directly to the member of staff concerned. Please also speak to Deborah, the Head Teacher or Diana and Andrew, the Assistant Head Teachers. If you have concerns or wish to make a complaint, please follow the appropriate procedure:

SCHOOL UNIFORM/DRESS CODE Our school colours are red, white and navy blue. Red sweatshirts, cardigans, v-necked jumpers and white polo shirts embroidered with the school logo can be bought online from www.speedstitch.co.uk or from www. Brigadeuniformdirect.uk.com. worn with navy blue trousers or skirts. PE kits of white top and navy blue shorts can also be bought online. You can also buy clothes in the school colours (without the embroidered logo) from local supermarkets. It is important to ensure that your child is dressed for school in clothes that are appropriate and comfortable and which they can manage by themselves. Appropriate footwear must also be worn; this could include either trainers or shoes. It is also important that all your child’s items of clothing are clearly marked with their name and year group.

JEWELLERY Children may only wear stud earrings if they have pierced ears. We only allow necklaces if they have a particular religious significance. Wearing jewellery of any kind can be dangerous for your child because the jewellery may get caught or accidentally pulled which can cause a painful and unpleasant accident. Please ensure that if your child does wear jewellery that it complies with these rules. The children are also not allowed to wear any make-up including nail varnish.

2. Is the matter resolved? If not speak with the Head Teacher or Assistant Head Teachers

1. Have you spoken with the Class Teacher?

3. Contact the Chair of Governors, via the School Office

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (P.E.) To comply with Health and Safety rules, children are required to change for P.E. Your child’s P.E. clothes should be clearly marked with their name and year group and kept in a bag also marked with their name and year group. This bag should be kept on your child’s peg at all times and the clothes taken home to be washed at regular intervals; for example, at the end of every half term or more frequently. Jenny Hammond PE bags can be bought from the school office for £4.00 Please ensure that your child wears navy blue or black shorts and a plain white t-shirt for P.E. Plimsolls can be worn when P.E. takes place outside; in the hall, P.E. is always done in bare feet. Navy blue tracksuit bottoms can be worn in the winter. Swimming is part of the PE National Curriculum.

ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY It is very important that your child is at school on time because the first 10 minutes of the day is when parents/carers have the opportunity to share a story, exchange books or do an “Early Bird” activity with their child or your child is taking part in other activities. It is most important for all children to attend school on a regular basis in order to make progress. Equally, it is important to develop good working habits by making sure your child arrives promptly to start lessons.

LATENESS If your child is late, please report to the office before your child goes into class. If your child is having a school dinner we have to order it by a certain time each morning. School dinners can not be ordered after 9.30 am. Class registers are taken at the beginning of the morning and afternoon sessions. Children arriving late after the register has been completed are given a late mark. These marks are regularly checked and monitored. If your child is continually late, you will be sent a written reminder. The Educational Welfare Officer will be informed if no improvement has been noticed following two written reminders.

12

ABSENCES If your child is ill, you should notify the school on the first day of absence. Absences are monitored by our admin officer, Marie McKenzie and our Educational Welfare Officer, (EWO). Holidays taken during term time will not be authorised. However, if your child needs to be absent in exceptional circumstances, this will be authorised if appropriate. Please contact the office to arrange a meeting with Marie and our EWO to discuss the absence and to complete an exceptional circumstance form. You may be fined if you take your children out of school in term time. All absences must be explained and reasons will be carefully noted. If the school is concerned about the number of absences, whether authorised by the parent or unexplained, the Learning Mentor will investigate.

ILLNESS & MEDICINES If your child is ill during the night or in the morning, or if s/he has a heavy cold, cough or high temperature, please do not bring him/her to school. As well as spreading germs, your child may be unhappy or not in the right mood for learning. If your child has asthma or any other medical condition, please inform the school. Inhalers and other such medicines need to be available in school for use should your child need it during the day. Please ensure that inhalers are clearly labelled with your child’s name and year group, what the dosage needs to be and when it is to be administered. All inhalers and other medicines are kept in the medical room except for the inhalers of children in year 5 and 6 here the inhalers are kept in the classrooms. If your child requires medicines as part of long-term treatment, please speak with Jacquie, Office Manager or Diana Williams, our Special Needs and Disabilities Coordinator. Health Care Plans will be completed for children that need particular care.

ACCESS TO THE SCHOOL The main access to our school at the beginning and end of each school day is through the playground entrance on Elsham Road. The gate to this entrance is open between the hours of 9am and 9.25am and between 3.25pm and 3.45pm. The entrance is kept locked at all other times for security reasons. During the school day you can access the school through our main entrance on Elsham Road. The school operates an entry phone system which ensures that visitors to the site are properly monitored by our staff. We also ask all visitors to sign our visitors’ book and wear a visitor’s lanyard. Parents/carers can feel confident that their children are properly supervised by vigilant staff in a safe and secure environment. We want our children, parents/carers and staff to enjoy the outside areas of our school confident in the knowledge that they are safe. The children have devised a Playground Charter to help them achieve a ‘happy playtime’.

PARKING If you bring your child to school by car, we would ask you to note and respect the zigzag parking restrictions which appear in the road outside the school in Elsham Road. Please help us to keep our children and families safe by keeping to the speed restriction of 20 mph in the streets around school; by parking safely and carefully; and by being aware that children and adults may be crossing the road. Also be aware that the surrounding roads are all controlled parking zones and parents should apply to Waltham Forest council for a school drop off permit which allows you to park to drop off your child.

BREAKFAST CLUB Breakfast Club meets in the dining hall every morning from 8.00am - 9.05am. All children must come with a parent/carer initially to register for this provision. We stop serving breakfasts at 8.40am however your children are supervised until the bell goes for class. Children are not allowed in the classrooms with parents before the start of the school day and must take their child directly to breakfast club. Entrance is from our main reception on Elsham Road.

DRINKS/FRUIT In KS1, children are provided with a piece of fruit as a morning playtime snack. In KS2, children can bring in some fruit for them to eat at morning play. We do not allow sweets of any kind in school. This includes chewing gum. Water is available throughout the day from the drinking fountains in the playground, designated taps throughout the school and from water bottles which the children can bring in from home.

SCHOOL LUNCHTIME MEALS School meals are available for all families who would like their child to have one. The meals are prepared and cooked in our school kitchen and all meals are served and eaten in our dining hall. School meals are cooked to a high standard and give your child the opportunity to receive a well-balanced midday meal. The weekly menu is displayed in the dining hall and can be found on our school website and on the Waltham Forest website. There are choices on the menu each day which include vegetarian and Halal. If your child has a special diet, please let us know so that we can ensure that one of midday assistants helps your child with their choice. Monday is a meat free day. School dinners are £2.00 a day and should be paid through our online system Parentpay. Please request an activation letter from our Office Manager, Jacquie Reid. If you are entitled to certain benefits, your child may be entitled to free school meals. Please ask at the office for further details or apply directly through the Waltham Forest Council website. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 currently do not pay for their school dinners as this is funded by the Government. It is still important to apply for free school meals though as this supports the school in terms of funding and allows you to carry the free school meals in to Year 3 if your circumstances haven’t changed. If you are in receipt of free school meals this also allows you to access discounts to certain trips and clubs.

PACKED LUNCHES Your child may bring a packed lunch as an alternative to a school lunch; this is also eaten in the dining hall. As we are a Healthy School, we encourage fruit and other healthy snacks as part of a well-balanced meal. We do not allow sweets (including chocolate) and fizzy drinks as part of a healthy packed lunch; nuts are also not allowed. Peanut Butter and Chocolate spread are not allowed. Please ensure that your child’s packed lunch box is clearly labelled with your child’s name and year group. Children who wish to transfer from school meals to packed lunches must give a week’s notice to the office staff.

HOME LUNCHES If you want to take your child home for their lunch, please remember that the lunchtime is from 12 noon - 1.15 pm. for Reception and KS1 children and 12.10 pm - 1.15 pm. for KS2 children. Children who go home to lunch must be collected by an adult who is known to the school and be returned to school no earlier than 1.10 p.m. It is very important that you inform the Class Teacher as to who is collecting and returning your child to school.

LUNCHTIME SUPERVISION The Midday Assistants (MDAs) and our Play Leader are employed to supervise the children who are having a school dinner or packed lunch. We expect our children to treat our MDAs and Play Leader as well as they treat other members of staff. Any form of disrespect shown towards our lunchtime staff or kitchen staff will not be tolerated. Similarly, any persistent negative behavioural issues at lunchtime will not be tolerated. You will be kept informed of any problems and asked to come into school should the need arise.

END OF THE DAY ARRANGEMENTS Children who are in Reception and KS1 classes must always be collected by an adult who is known to the school staff. You will be asked, as part of the admissions process, to name the adult who will collect your child. Children in KS2 may be collected by an older brother/sister or an adult known to the school staff. For children in Years 5 and 6 only, we ask that parents send a note in to their child’s Class Teacher giving permission for their child to walk home alone if you live close enough to the school for your child to do this safely. If, for any reason, the arrangements for collection change, please contact the school by telephone or letter.

Page 15: SCHOOL HANDBOOK 2018-2019fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/JennyHammond/... · Engage inspire empower This school continues to be good. The leadership team

15

It is important that your child is collected on time because s/he can become distressed if they are the last child to go after the afternoon session is over. Staff also continue to work on planning, administration and training after school ends. We ask for your cooperation and vigilance to help us ensure that all our children are handed over safely from our care at the end of the day.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUB An after school club meets every day from 3.30 pm - 5.30 pm offering childcare and is organised by an external provider, Early Rise. Please contact the school office if you wish your child to attend. The office will also be able to provide further information about the after school club including cost. Early Rise can be contacted direct through Joy Ventour on 07532 002 898.

OUTINGS Your child’s class will go on educational outings during the school year to places of interest linked to the topic which is being explored at the time. The trips might be to art galleries, museums, theatres, and so on. These trips are of immense educational value and children build on the experiences when they return to school. Your child’s Class Teacher will let you know when a visit has been organised. Letters and further details will be sent as they are needed. If volunteers are required to support groups during the visit, please offer your help if you are able. Your support will be very much appreciated and, who knows, you may find that you enjoy the visit more than the children! The majority of our educational visits are free. However, on occasion, we do ask parents and carers to contribute to cover the cost of an entrance fee or workshops which may take place during a visit. These visits should be paid through Parentpay however we can on occasion still take cash. We aim for Reception, KS1 and KS2 children to visit theatres at the end of the Autumn term to see a Christmas pantomime. End of year outings for Reception and KS1 include visits to such locations as Paradise Park or the Princess Diana Memorial Park and Hobbledown. Children in Year 3, 4 and 5 visit Legoland or Thorpe Park.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is it possible to take my child out during term time for holidays? No. In exceptional circumstances, the Head Teacher may give permission for you to take your child out during term time. Parents/carers must write to the Head Teacher to ask permission or fill out an Exceptional Circumstance form which you can get from the school office.

2. How often do the children get homework? Homework is given out in the form of POWer projects which relate to the half term topics. The children are asked to complete small projects every half term relating to the different areas of learning that total at least 5 points. The completed work, once handed in, is presented to the class by the child and all POWer projects are showcased to the parents every half term. This is alongside completing reading and writing journals on a weekly basis in Key stage 2. All children are expected to read on a daily basis and learn their spellings. Children in Reception are also expected to read on a daily basis and work on their key word recognition

3. How often can I see my child’s Class Teacher? Parent consultations are held every Tuesday after school. Parents/carers are encouraged to sign up for one 15-minute appointment every term. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss your child’s progress and/or behaviour or any concerns parents/carers and the Class Teacher may have. You can also see your child’s Class Teacher briefly before or after school. Appointments to see Deborah, the Head Teacher or Diana or Andrew, the Assistant Head Teachers, can be made through the office.

4. Are we able to observe our own religious holidays if they fall during term time? Of course. Please inform the school office and your child’s Class Teacher. Your child will be marked in the register as “religious observance” and this will be an authorised absence.

5. When do reports come out? The Class Teachers write annual reports which are sent out in June. This is followed by two open evenings where parents/carers are able to discuss their child’s report with the Class Teacher.

6. When are the SATs? SATS stand for Standard Assessment Tests and Tasks. The Year 6 SATs are usually every May for one week. The Year 2 SATs are in the Summer Term and are not sat as traditional tests. The Class Teacher and Teaching Assistant works with groups of children and a teacher assessment is given.

7. How is my child assessed? Class Teachers assess the children all the time using a mixture of observation and established criteria. Progress is tracked on school tracking systems. Work samples are taken in writing and maths. Reading conferences are held once every term which informs reading groups in class. Teachers regularly meet to discuss the progress of different groups in the class. This information is then used to decide whether particular children need specific work in smaller focus groups. Parents will be informed if this is necessary.
