For additional information, please see Appendix 3.

Homework Homework is an extension of the classroom learning process. It is one method to help students establish self-discipline and study skills. Homework is also a way to keep parents informed and involved with their child’s schoolwork. Assignments may be brief or may include long-range projects. Assignments may be individualized for remediation or enrichment. Time spent on homework should promote productive and positive experiences. Parents can help by encouraging their children to establish effective study habits and by reviewing homework with their child. It is very helpful for parents to establish set times for the homework. If your child has no current assignment, he/she should be encouraged to read. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s homework, please contact your child’s teacher directly. Student Performance Assessments There are five items to be considered for students’ performance assessment: Homework, in-class-quiz, participation, attendance, mid-term and final exams. Students’ Grade (report card) will be sent home in two weeks after each exam. Please contact your classroom teacher for any questions or concerns. Make-Up Exam and Work All students are required to take part in the mid and final exams. If missed the finals, students are supposed to make it up. The make-up finals will be arranged by campus principal or administrator in charge. Missed homework assignments will be given upon the child’s return. The parent should contact the teacher to create a plan for missed work. Promotion Requirements The ACCA Board believes the mission of the school system is to pursue excellence in academic knowledge and skills for each student through a process of measured improvement. The Board also believes that students should earn promotion from one grade level to another by documenting acceptable performance on appropriate

Page 13: School Handbook - ACCA · The Atlanta Contemporary Chinese Academy (ACCA), formerly Emory Chinese Academy (ECA), was founded in 1992 by a group of community-oriented volunteers in

assessments. Therefore, promotion for social or other non-academic reasons is not permissible in ACCA. For promotion, students must demonstrate proficiency of the grade level academic requirements and pass the grade level assessments. Textbooks Three sets/series of textbooks are available for purchase. Student Placement We are very proud of our outstanding teachers. Each year, we make every effort to place each child with a teacher that best meets his or her needs. Parents are given the opportunity each term to submit placement request before class lists are formed. After class lists are published, if a parent has a serious concern regarding placement, they should put the concern in writing to the campus principal for that particular grade level. The principal will set up a conference to work with the parent and teacher to resolve whatever issues are involved. All cases are handled on an individual basis. Teacher-Parent Communication Communication between parents and teachers is an essential component of student success. We encourage parents to communicate regularly with the child’s teacher. If you have a concern about your child, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher. After talking with the teacher, if you continue to have a concern, please contact the assistant principal for your child’s grade level for further assistance.

Student Behavior and Conduct Students learn best in a safe, positive and orderly environment. With the appropriate support and encouragement, all students are capable of being responsible for their own behavior. Parents and educators must work together as partners in teaching students to make good decisions about their behavior and to understand there are consequences for making poor decisions. Action Plan • Classroom Management: Additional warning, time out within the classroom • Email parent an action plan • Phone call from teacher to parent • Parent signs and returns Action Plan

An Action Plan is a document that allows the teacher and student to discuss and address the student's behavior, the school and classroom rule that was not followed, and appropriate behaviors. The form is a communication tool between the school, student and parent about making good choices.

If a situation occurs at the end of the day, the teacher will call parents that day and an administrator will follow up the next day. Formal Disciplinary Action The consequences for major behavior offenses that include fighting, destroying school or private property, defying authority, or repeated violations of school rules may result in school suspension and dismissal. Toys and Electronics (*Note: BYOD Policy) In order to provide the best learning environment for students, please do not allow your child to bring the following items to school. ACCA will not be held liable for cell phone damages. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) As we broaden our use of technology, some teachers may choose to do activities which involve inviting students to bring their own electronic devices (smart phone, tablet, e-readers, etc.). The owner of the device is responsible for ensuring that the device is safe and secure. ACCA and employees of ACCA are not liable or responsible for any theft, damage, or loss of any non-district device or the information on any such device. ACCA is not responsible for any damages, fees, lost functionality, support, or costs that may be the result of students or staff members participating in BYOD. This is a voluntary program, and students will not be penalized if they cannot participate. Whether the device is owned by a parent, student, staff member, or school, the user of the device is responsible for protecting the device at school, on the bus, or at school functions.

First Aid All campuses have First Aid Kit onsite. Student Illness If a child becomes ill during the school day, the front desk will attempt to reach the child’s parents. understanding of the principles and concepts of oral and written proficiency testing and of one’s ability to apply theory to practice.

Hiring Procedures Those who qualified to teach at ACCA can apply. We accept email application together with Resume attached. When the application is received, School administrator will start the review and arrange sample teaching if the applicants are good fit. When the interview is completed, the new teachers or potential teachers will be assigned to classroom training for at least 4 weeks before starting teaching. Some teacher trainees spend more than 6 months before assigned to teach. ACCA Contract If a person is hired to teach, a teaching contract is signed for one year. The trial teaching is one semester. After the trial-teaching period is over, the teacher will become ACCA teacher and salary is increased. Training and Development ACCA teachers are required to take one mandatory training in each semester. The training is usually organized by the school. Teachers are also encouraged to attend professional trainings on their own. See Appendix 8 for Teacher and Staff Codes and Appendix 9 for Teacher Work Rules.

Emergency Procedures Fire/Evacuation, Severe Weather, and Lock Down drills are held throughout the school year. ACCA teachers, staff and students follow specific procedures for each emergency situation. If it is necessary for students to be checked out during an emergency situation, the school will accommodate only if it does not jeopardize the safety of students. If the emergency requires parents to pick up students from school or an alternate location, parents’ identification will be verified prior to releasing the student. It is imperative that the student information form is updated. If an emergency situation occurs, parents will be notified as soon as administration is available to do so. For more emergency information, please see Appendix 10.

Appendix 10: ACCA Emergency Plan (应急计划)

ACCA Emergency Plan Overview Being physically and psychologically prepared for emergencies, disasters, accidents, injuries, and crime is the responsibility of an individual as well as an organization. ACCA cares about the safety of the students, parents, teachers, staff, and volunteers who come to the campuses for Chinese learning-related activities. This ACCA Emergency Plan is developed to provide a quick reference to minimize the negative effects resulting from an emergency. An emergency is a sudden, urgent, usually unexpected occurrence or occasion requiring immediate action. A building evacuation can be required for a variety of emergencies: fire, tornadoes, blizzards, floods, toxic chemical releases, and others. The ACCA Emergency Plan addresses emergencies that may be reasonably expected in the campuses. This document is updated as needed and can be located under the “Other” tab of the ACCA website at http://acca-web.org/. Emergency Contact Information 911 – Calls to Police, Fire, and Medical Emergency Personnel 678-576-2238 – Calls to ACCA Emergency Plan Manager, Hui Qin 678-654-1168 – Calls to ACCA General Principal, Linda Sun Building Evacuation Team Building Evacuation Team is made up of the Building Evacuation Leader, the Principal of a particular ACCA Campus, Floor Coordinator, the Administrator of a particular ACCA Campus, and Class Monitors by teachers of each particular class. During an evacuation, floor coordinators carry a sign that identifies the building and floor numbers. The floor coordinator reports to the building evacuation leader. The Class Monitors are the teachers for each classroom and report to the floor coordinator.
