SCHOOL HOLIDAYS : Monday, 11th July – Friday, 22nd July.

School recommences on Monday, 25th July at 8.55am. Newsletter No 21 Phone 03 547 7399 Cellphone 021 629 635 7 July 2016 Email: office@ naylandprimary.school.nz www.naylandprimary.school.nz

Kia ora Families and Whanau On Tuesday the Maunga Syndicate and Room 12 were privileged to listen to Mitchell Chandler talk about his leadership work and achieving goals and dreams. Mitchell, who used to attend Nayland Primary, was here as part of the Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Week. His talk was inspiring and he shared the story of wearing red socks to support making your dreams come true. On Friday it is officially Red Socks Day in New Zealand so all students are encouraged to wear their red socks to school if they have some! This week we have been celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Maori. Our students have had lots of exposure to Te Reo this week and they have all been learning their mihi. Our assembly at 9am tomorrow will see us celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Maori. Congratulations to our competitors at the Regional Cross Country on Tuesday. A fine effort from everyone and a special mention of Alana who qualified to attend the Inter-Regional Championships in Wellington in September. It was great to meet many of you at the Student Led Conferences last week. Your children’s school reports, sent home today, support the information which was shared with you at the conferences. Tomorrow the Kapa Haka group are performing at the District Health Services luncheon at the Stoke Hall. They will be wearing their new uniforms in public for the first time. Sincere thanks to Whaea Tamika and Whaea Belinda for preparing our students for this performance. Next term our fundraising team have organised Calendar Art for all children to complete in class. This fundraiser results in students designing art work to go on a calendar, diary or cards which families can purchase. The calendars and cards make great Christmas gifts and will be commercially printed in time for posting overseas.

Tomorrow is the last day of term and in the holidays the junior playground is going to have new bark put down. This involves digging out all of the old bark and replacing it with new Bounce Bark which meets the NZ Playground Safety Standards. While this part of the playground will be fenced off, we ask that you stay away from the area in the holidays. The holidays are a great time to spend time with your family. Children love to get out and about on fine days. Put away the technology and take trips to the park and the beach, go on family bike rides, enjoy reading afternoons, play games and do puzzles. These are just a few of the great family activities to enjoy over the holiday break. I look forward to welcoming you all back to school on Monday 25 July. Noho ora mai ra Janice Gulbransen PRINCIPAL

END OF TERM ASSEMBLY : 9.05am tomorrow, Friday, 8th July in the Multi Purpose Learning Centre.

RETURN OF LIBRARY BOOKS Please return any outstanding books to the Library tomorrow. Thank you.

HEALTHY DIETS FOR SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN

Eating becomes a social activity at this stage of life. Children probably spend more time at school than home; eat meals at friends’ houses; and adopt eating habits from their peers. It can be difficult to ensure they are getting adequate nutrition when you are not around to monitor their choices, so try to maintain regular family mealtimes.

For children aged 5-12 the key word is variety. Creative serving ideas will go a long way towards maintaining the healthy eating habits established in the first years of life.

Not only do family meals provide an opportunity to catch up on your children’s daily lives, they also enable you to “teach by example”. Let them see you eating a wide variety of healthy foods while keeping your portions in check. Refrain from obsessive calorie counting, though, or commenting on your own weight so that children don’t adopt negative associations with food.

The Stoke loop is a “hail and ride” service so you don’t even need to wait at a formal bus stop. Just look out

Calling all old Mobile Phones to help Sustainable Coastlines look after NZ’s coastlines and waterways. After $2.5 million donated to the Starship Foundation from the sale of unwanted old mobile phones it is time for a new multi award winning NZ charity - Sustainable Coastline to benefit from this scheme.

It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers and toy boxes and bring into School any unwanted mobile phones you may have. Phones collected help our School gain valuable rewards and also the environment benefits by keeping our landfills free of mobile phones and their array of hazardous toxic substances. Please drop any unwanted mobile phones you may have in the collection box in the reception area at School.

KAN TABS FOR KIDNEY KIDS (AND SCREW TOPS FROM WINE BOTTLES) Your contribution DOES make a difference. Collect tabs and tops from relatives, friends and neighbours. “Each time a tab is torn from a can and placed in a pocket or a bag, a conscious thought is made to support a sick child.” The Kan Tab is A Symbol for Hope. It is estimated that one tab is worth one second of support for a child waiting for a better chance of life through dialysis or a kidney transplant. Keep the Kan Tabs and screw tops separate and take them to Nayland Primary School office.
