Principals Message :
Dear Carrie Weedon Families,
The entire faculty and staff have been working diligently to foster a safe, positive and nurturing learning environment
that promotes student success. September 10, 2019 was the first day that all 60 students entered the doors of Carrie
Weedon EEC at the same time. Students have grown tremendously and are well versed in school routines. Teachers
continue to plan and deliver differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students.
I would like to thank all the parents who visited their child’s classroom for American Education Week! It’s a great way
to strengthen the teamwork between school and home. Mrs. Nabinger, our music teacher, and Mrs. Braithwaite, our
art teacher, planned a beautiful age-appropriate Veteran’s Day program to honor veterans in our community. Veter-
ans and active duty family members attended the assembly. The American flags created by students were displayed.
Students sung patriotic songs that touched the hearts of each person present at the program.
Carrie Weedon families were so generous with their giving for the Harvest for the Hungry. We collected nearly 100
non-perishable items to donate to the Anne Arundel County Food Bank. Thank you! At this time, we are collecting Toys
for Tots and gloves and hats for children in need. If you do give, families in need will truly appreciate it.
Thursday, December 5th is Unity Day, and our students will receive a Unity Day shirt paid for by our very generous Art
Teacher, Mrs. Braithwait’s Artworks Studio. Unity Day is a time where students participate in activities that promote
unity and kindness.
Carrie Weedon families we need your help!!!! Carrie Weedon EEC has been sponsored to participate in the Rotary’s
LIGHTS OF KINDNESS tree decorating contest at Homestead Gardens. This is a huge fundraiser for our school. We need
your family, extended family, and friends to vote for Carrie Weedon’s tree. Our theme will be “Like puzzle pieces, we
are all unique but with love and kindness, we fit together.” For every dollar that you donate, Carrie Weedon EEC will
receive a vote and $.50. For example, if you donate $20.00, Carrie Weedon EEC will receive 20 votes and $10.00. Vot-
ing options:
Online voting: 24 hours a day at www.RotaryLightsofKindness.org Dec. 6th-Dec. 9th at 4:00pm On-site voting hours: Dec. 6th -7th , 9:00 AM-8:00PM Dec. 8th 9:00 AM-5:00 PM ****Remember, that every dollar counts as a vote, and benefits our local community!
Our next parent meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 21sst.. We look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Harris
Teeter’s Together in Education program is established for Carrie Weedon EEC. The account number is 6438. Present
the number to the cashier during check-out and give the school’s name. Tell the cashier that you want the school’s
account number to your Harris Teeter VIC card. Once the account number is linked, every time you shop during the
program, 5% of your Harris Teeter brand purchases will be contributed by Harris Teeter to the school’s account.
Pre-K Registration will begin on Wednesday, February 5, 2020. Registration will be from 8:30-2:00. After February 6th,
registration will be from 8:30-12:00 noon daily. Kindergarten registration will begin April 1, 2020. More information
will be coming for kindergarten registration.

have received complaints from the community about people speeding between 8:15am and 8:30am.
Parents, a reminder to provide your child with jacket, hat and gloves during the cold weather months. Children will
have outdoor recess when the temperature is 32 degrees or above. Listed below is the Cultural Arts schedule.

About Attendance
• If your child arrives after 8:40
a.m., he/she will be late.
• If your child leaves before
11:15 a.m., he/she will be
absent for the day.
• If your child leaves after
11:15 a.m., but before 12:45
p.m., he/she will receive an
early dismissal with half day
absence.
• When a child is absent, please
send a note. When these pro-
cedures are not followed, the
absence code must be as-
sumed to be unlawful and will
be coded as unexcused.
• After 12:45p.m., early dismis-
sal will be given any student
who leaves before 2:50 p.m.
Parents, keep in mind that habits
are formed early. It is more diffi-
cult to break a bad habit. For ex-
ample, when a child begs to stay
home and parent says, “just this
once” rather than saying “no” in
the beginning.

Emergency Forms
Emergency Forms and other important documents were
distributed at Parent/Teacher Conferences. Please re-
turn these forms ASAP. Make sure the forms are com-
plete with up-to-date phone numbers, email and emer-
gency contacts. Also remember to sign the form.
This is vital information for the office, health room, and
the staff in case of an emergency.
From The Health Room
Please keep your contact information updated with office, as well as the health
room. Also, if your child is absent because of a visit to the doctor, we must
have a doctor's note for that date. Also, no over-the-counter medicine is permit-
ted without a doctor’s note This includes cough drops
If your child has a fever, is ill, or has vomited, please do not send them to
school the next day. Students should be fever free for 24 hours, without fever
reducing medicine. We can’t prevent the flu, but we can do our best to keep it
at bay.
Check out the complete newsletter on our website for important information
from our Nurse, Tracy Marcalus, and our Health Assistant, Brenda Robinson.
EMERGENCY DRILLS
During each school year, various drills are conducted at every school to
ensure that staff and students are prepared in the event of an emergency.
These drills include monthly fire/evacuation drills. In addition, five drills
with scenarios developed by the school system’s Office of School Security
and based upon various possible emergency scenarios are done each year.
These include, but are not limited to: evacuation for natural gas emergencies;
shelter for tornado and earthquake; shelter for outside hazardous materials
release; lockout for danger outside of the school building, reverse evacuation
back into the school for students and staff outside; and lockdown for a dan-
gerous situation inside of the school.
These drills are discussed with staff prior to the drill and evaluated once the
drill is complete. In some cases, age-appropriate essential drill information
may be discussed with students before they take place. Please know that
visitors may not be able to access the building for a few minutes during the
drills.

A message from the Pre—K Team: Mrs. Barber, Ms. Frank, and Mrs. Pumphrey:
During the month of December, we will complete our unit about communities. We will discuss ways to help our community and discuss what is a world community. In Language Arts, we are continuing to learn our let-ters and sounds. Please review all letters, sounds and proper letter strokes for the letters in your child’s name. We will also be exploring letters Kk, Dd, and Ff. The everyday words that we will learn are have, what, a, and do. The best way to help kids learn the alphabet is through fun and games. Here are some resources you might like for your youngsters. Alphabet Fun I Spy: One of the oldest games, this is nevertheless a great one as it needs no equipment and can be played anywhere. If you see a piano for example, you would tell your child, "I spy with my little eye, something begin-ning with "p." Your child tries to work out what it is. Alphabet Books: Look for printed alphabet books with pictures that will interest your child, and large simple letters. Children will often learn such books by heart, an important stage in the road to real reading. Also con-sider making your own alphabet books, perhaps from photos of your child's toys or of family members. Making Letters: Tracing, painting, and modeling letters from play dough are all excellent activities to help chil-dren focus on the way a letter is made. Keep it fresh by painting outside with a wall painting brush and water-color or trying other different paints, brushes, and surfaces. I like to teach kids from the start how to make a letter according to the correct model for their school, but some people think this is me being a fuddy-duddy. Hide the Letter: It's great to have letters printed on cards, or plastic letters or even foam ones for the bathtub. Incidental remarks like "Oh, what is that 'W' doing under the tap?" or "Mummy has hidden the 'B.' Can you find it?" take only a few seconds, but constant repetition means that over time it aids letter recognition. Magnet Letters: Having magnet letters attached to the fridge or a simple metal baking sheet means you have a ready source for simple games of hide-the-letter, word making, word muddling, etc. Alphabet blocks are won-derful too. Make it a habit to leave little messages or muddled up words on the fridge each day, and your child can do the same. Toy Letter: One simple way to encourage letter recognition is to tape letters to toys or blocks. LEGO Duplo is great for this, especially once kids have moved on to making words from letters, because the blocks link to-gether. Try incidental questions like, "Where is the D truck?" or even games where you are the traffic controller and your youngster needs to bring certain vehicles of the alphabet to designated places. If your child has a large doll collection, try matching letters to the dolls' names. Build towers in turn with toddlers, naming the letter facing you as you do. Letter Sentences: Try making sentences where each word mostly starts with the same letter, e.g., Andrew Ant accidentally ate an apricot.
In Math, we will complete the unit about measurable attributes. Be sure to keep using the words small, big, short, long, tall, heavy and light during everyday activities. We will then explore numbers 5-10. We will prac-tice writing, identifying and making sets to 10.

The Reading Corner with Mrs. Kasulke, Carrie Weedon Reading Teacher
Write to A Friend Month
December is Write to A Friend month. Children enjoy drawing pictures and “writing” about their
pictures, too. Children begin writing at first by simply scribbling with a crayon, pencil or marker. Later,
they begin to write random letters, letter strings and finally conventional spelling. It would be a fun expe-
rience during the winter break for your child to “write” a letter to a friend or relative. Ask your child what
they wrote about. I’m sure that they will have a lot to say to that special person.
Winter Picture Books
Making time each day to read together is a wonderful way to promote literacy. Visiting your local
library is a great way to find some new books to read at home during the approaching winter break. Here
are a few titles that you might want to consider checking out from your local library:
Bear Snores On by: Karma Wilson
Froggy Gets Dressed by: Jonathon London
Katy and the Big Snow by: Virginia Lee Burton
Red Sled by: Patricia Thomas
Snowballs by: Lois Ehlert
The Mitten by: Jan Brett
The Snowman by: Raymond Briggs
When the Snow Falls by: Linda Booth Sweeney
It is very important to make time each day to read together at home. Routines that are estab-
lished at home while your child is in Pre-K will be very valuable for Kindergarten success.
I hope that you have a wonderful winter break! I look forward to seeing each of you in 2020!
