HOW DID IT COME ABOUT?
Sugata Mitra pioneered the “Hole in the Wall” experiment in 1999
1999 2007 2013 2015
Sugata Mitra presented three TED talks (07-13), culminating to winning the $1M TED Prize
Around the world, educators are also bringing the SOLE concept to the classroom
The concept: Self-Organizing Learning Environments (SOLEs)
Timeline:

WHAT IS A SELF-ORGANIZED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (SOLE)?
Within a SOLE, students learn collaboratively using the internet. A mediator poses a Big Question and students form groups themselves to find an answer.
The mediator is often a member of the Granny Cloud, a team of e-mediators who reach out via Skype. Educators also mediate, but know not to force the learning!

5
IT’S CHANGING THE FUTURE OF LEARNING!
Results:
Retention: Students retain learnings months after the exercise
Teamwork: Students who don’t get along cooperate in SOLEs
Confidence: Shy children feel proud to present their findings
Reading: Students use sites with high lexile levels (8th to college)
Time: SOLEs have improved the time effectiveness of educators
Results are based on research from 1,000+ classrooms over 5+ years!
Digital Literacy: Children quickly become adept with technology

SOLE Central, a research centre of
Newcastle University, is collecting
and analysing research across the
School in the Cloud ecosystem
Some research areas include:• Using SOLEs to help children learn coding
• Impact of Skype Grannies on aspirations
• Using SOLEs to learn English as a foreign
language

Growth Vision
• Fundraising to ensuring 5-yr sustainability
• Collecting research for best practices
Three labs built by School in the Cloud, in
rural India serving ~120 students each
$10$10 per month cost to sustain a child at a
stand-alone lab, which is significantly
less (3x less) than other NGO models
