Krahn offers a way for children to get assistance with problems through the SNAP bags (student needs assistance pronto) and the peer mediation program. We also offer an extensive mentoring program which includes members of the community, school personnel and community members known as the Grand Pals. Opportunities for participation also are available as the winter holidays approach as we have classroom elves who help collect food and toys for needy children. Conferences and counseling with students, parents and teachers keep the counselor busy and involved in every aspect of the school. Our elementary school was named after the Krahn family because they were a family of hard-working people who contributed to the Klein community. Krahn Elementary has continued in the tradition of the early Krahn family by making contributions to the community it serves. Today our school is a large, two-story building with 61 classrooms, a stationary computer lab, two mobile wireless laptop labs, an art room, a science lab, a library, and a multi-purpose cafeteria. Approximately 770 students in early childhood through fifth grade are currently enrolled at Krahn.

Krahn Elementary enjoys the support of a very involved PTO that sponsors many activities, fundraisers and education enrichment programs during the school year. This includes five teacher appreciation luncheons, holiday parties, family fun nights and field trips. Our PTO strives to facilitate positive relationships between families and staff while supplementing our children’s education and fostering an appreciation for learning.

Krahn Elementary is rated a Met Standard campus in Klein ISD and received a Top 25 percent Student Progress Distinction Designation.

At Krahn, the counselor provides opportunities for children to participate in the life of the school through the Cardinal Crews. The Crews operate all year and involve up to 300 children who do jobs around the school such as delivering birthday cards and taking pictures of outstanding children each week.

Special ProgramsKrahn Elementary has many musical opportunities for our students. The fourth and fifth grade Cardinal Choir meets one day per week. Fifth graders also have an opportunity to join the string class, which is held two days a week. MIDI for KIDS is a group keyboard program held weekday afternoons for students in first through fifth grades. The Music and Math Connection is a program for Pre-K and Kindergarten children, and is a fun class based on the National Standards of math and music education.

Krahn’s P.E. department exposes students to as many activities as possible. We also teach sound wellness information, so that students can realize the importance of physical activity/healthy choices and implement them at home and school. Other activities include: Go Western Day Hoe-down, field days, Krahn fun run and family fun nights. Third through fifth grade students also participate in the Fitnessgram testing required by the State of Texas. We have also sponsored a skating program, tennis program, H.E.B. pedometer program for second graders, and Be Fit program sponsored by the Houston Rockets.

Art Classes at Krahn are focused on the development of both technical and critical thinking skills in the realm of fine arts. Students have the opportunity to explore techniques including painting, sculpting and collage creation as well as printmaking, stitching and weaving. Throughout the year, students are given the opportunity to participate in art competitions such as Texas Rodeo Art Contest, Youth Art Month, Houston Northwest Medical Center Art Competition, Doodle 4 Google, Pearl Fincher Art Museum Contest, Texas Association of School Boards Art Contest and Dr. Mari Jon Filla Dog Show Art contest.

Krahn Elementary has a strong instructional program and high student success. Klein ISD employs a rigorous curriculum based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. At Krahn, our goal is for all students to demonstrate mastery of the statewide Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Our students will continue to benefit from high expectations, a shared vision of quality education, and open communication between home and school.

English Language ArtsIn the elementary ELA program, the emphasis is on the development of fundamental reading and writing skills. Reading instruction includes training in phonics, structural analysis, sight word recognition, context clues, vocabulary development, comprehension, study skills, and literary appreciation. Writing instruction teaches students how to use written language appropriately. Instruction includes specific training in grammar, spelling, handwriting, word usage, punctuation, and capitalization, as well as more generalized training in composing written expressions. Skills in speaking and listening are also taught with the instruction for reading and writing.

MathAt the elementary level, students build a foundation of basic understandings for the following: number operation and quantitative reasoning; patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking; geometry and spatial reasoning; measurement; and probability and statistics.

ScienceAt the elementary level, students learn science basic skills and how to identify components of the natural world. Students study life, earth, and physical science concepts.

Social StudiesIn grades K-12, students build a foundation in history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, culture, science, technology and society, and social studies skills. The content, as appropriate for the grade level or course, enables students to understand the importance of patriotism, function in a free enterprise society, and appreciate the basic democratic values of our state and nation.
