Welcome to

Warrington Collegiate,

a really great place

to learn

I’m Ashlea Sanson, a student at Warrington Collegiate studying for the Advanced BTEC Extended

Diploma in Art & Design. I’m in my second year at the College and plan to go to University next

year.

The College has so many different courses, from Fashion Design and Audio Production to

Construction and Sport. There’s bound to be one to interest you. You will be able to use the wide

range of fantastic facilities whilst you are at College, including the theatre, salons, a restaurant, mac

suites and a very well equipped Learning Resource Centre, which has books and lots more to help

with your assignments.

As well as studying for a qualification, you will be able to get involved in student societies, the

student council and lots of trips and residentials, which will enhance your CV and personal

statement if you want to apply to University in the future. I really enjoyed helping out at College

open days and meeting prospective students. I have also been involved in representing student

views at College meetings and was awarded ‘Gold’ as part of the Warrington Collegiate Graduate

scheme last year which recognises student involvement in College life.

I really enjoy studying at Warrington Collegiate and know that you will too. Why not come along to

one of our open days, talk to tutors and students and find out for yourself.

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are those essential competencies employers look for and include practical English,

Maths and ICT skills. Functional Skills are vital for everyday life and will be invaluable in your future

career.

Depending on your GCSE results, you will have the opportunity to study for either Functional Skills

qualifications alongside your full time course or, alternatively, to re-sit your GCSEs. Students

studying on a Foundation Learning Programme and those embarking on an Apprenticeship will also

undertake Functional Skills as a mandatory part of their course.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship programmes are the perfect route if you are already in employment and you want to

improve your skills and qualifications within your area of work. As employees, Apprentices earn a

wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Whilst most Apprentices

attend college on a day-release basis, others are wholly work-based and are visited on a regular

basis by our team of experienced Assessors. Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of

areas. Please see page 36 for more information.

Earn while you learn

What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships allow you to earn while you learn and gain qualifications as you work. As

STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics]

STEM subjects are integral to the UK’s success: the UK is the world’s sixth largest manufacturer,

engineering turnover is around £800 billion per year, and whilst the UK makes up only 1% of the

world’s population, we produce 10% of the world’s top scientific research. Despite this, it is

remarkable to note that even though STEM graduates have the potential to earn amongst the

highest salaries of all new recruits, employers are finding it difficult to recruit STEM skilled staff.

Alongside our need for a skilled STEM workforce, it is crucial that all young people, regardless of

their future career pathway, have the STEM knowledge and skills they need to be an informed citi-

zen in an increasingly scientific and technological society.

STEM in the North West

The North West has an economy worth more than £119bn, making it the UK’s largest regional

economy. The North West is also home to the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, and is Europe’s

second largest media hub. The region currently has an annual Research & Development investment

of over £2.2bn.

Many of the region’s most high-profile employers are STEM-related and there are increasing

numbers of smaller STEM-related employers in new sectors including nuclear decommissioning

and nano-materials.

STEM at Warrington Collegiate Sixth Form

Warrington Collegiate Sixth Form offers a range of qualifications aimed at providing you with the

knowledge and skills you will need for the future. All qualifications are delivered by highly qualified

and experience of staff who have excellent links with industry. Qualifications are available at a

variety of levels, including Advanced level, which provides an ideal progression route to higher

education. Qualifications include the following:

• Applied Science (Intermediate and Advanced Levels)

• Engineering (Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced Levels)

diverse range of opportunities in Further/ Higher education, training and

alone. At Warrington Collegiate Sixth Form our aim is to provide a range of sports

courses that can start you on the path to a successful career in sport. The
