School Links Case StudySam TennantL2 Engineering Apprenticeship Excel Academy

Sam first discovered his love of engineering thanks tothe college’s School Links programme, which offersschool pupils the chance to attend college one day aweek and learn new skills.

After finishing school, Sam joined the Level 2Engineering course at the Stoke on Trent College. He soon impressed tutors and was offered anapprenticeship within the Engineering Departmentat the college’s Burslem Campus.

Sam said: “School Links helped me a lot. I wasn’t sure

what to really expect from it, but I got a lot morethan I thought. I got to know what I wanted to dobefore fully committing to a course and it gave meinsight to what college life was like.

I’m not sure I would have had the confidence to gofor an apprenticeship or even have known where toapply without it. I’m learning all the skills for myfuture. It’s all hands-on which is exactly what Iwanted.

The apprenticeship has definitely given me moreoptions for my future. I come to college one day aweek as a student, the rest of the week I’m amember of staff, which was strange at first but it’sworking out great.

I get to carryout engineering jobs for the otherworkshops, and maintenance jobs across thecampus.”

SCHOOL LINKS AT STOKE ON TRENT COLLEGEStudents prove they are well and truly a cut above

School Link students from Stoke on Trent College stood head and shoulders above the competition at the Regional Hair & Beauty competition held at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.

Over 200 competitors came together to showcase their talent.

Our School Links team were extremely proud of all the students who attended the competition. Not only were they challenging themselves within the competitive arena, some of the students were overcoming personal goals, such as travelling away from their city. Having never left the boundaries of Stoke-on-Trent before, the dizzy heights of Blackpool could have been overwhelming for some of the group, but our students took it all in their stride.

The team did not come home empty-handed either, as Stoke on Trent College took centre stage within the Natural Day Make-Up Category: Jolie Bull-Bradley from Ormiston Horizon Academy took the prize for first place, just pipping to the winning post teammate Catarina Plant from St Thomas More Academy, who took second place.

Within the Hair-Up Category, the team were also pleased to see student Aron Dunn, from Loxley Hall School, placed third, and he will be joining Jolie and Catarina in the National Hair and Beauty Finals, where they will compete against the best in the country.

Both the College and students are delighted about making it through to the National Finals.
