Parents join their children for this special first day of school (All students must be accompanied by an adult family member)

This is an open house - so choose a convenient time of day that works for you There will be no buses for Elementary students (JK-6th Grade) on this day We will not have regular classes, and students will remain with parents

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019

(The First Day of School) 10:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Full details and schedule will be shared in early August (Jr./Sr. High students (Grades 7-12) will have a “normal” first day

of school on September 3rd, with classes and buses running as usual)

School Lunch/Breakfast Program

E-Funds On-line payment option for Foodservice accounts

The School District of Clear Lake serves meals each day. Lunch prices per day are: Elementary - $2.75; Junior High $2.85; High School - $2.95; Adult - $3.60; reduced lunch price – 40 cents. Breakfast prices per day are Elementary $1.25; High School $1.35; Adult $1.80. Reduced breakfast price is 30 cents per breakfast.

One carton of milk is provided with each meal. Each additional milk, or milk without the purchase of a school meal, is $.30. Milk for elementary milk break is still provided by the District at no cost.

Each student is assigned a lunch ID for the school year. Every family will have one lunch account for all of their children. As your child(ren) make purchases, the cost of the purchase will be deducted from your family account. Due to this type of accounting, we request that each family deposit no less than $25 into their

account. This amount can be used at any time during the school year. Food service accounts must maintain a positive balance. When the balance of an account becomes negative, further charges will not be allowed.

**A reminder to parents of the school board policy on delinquent lunch accounts

Grades 4K-6: Students coming through the food service line shall pay the daily rate or they will be offered a peanut butter sandwich and a carton of milk for lunch up to three days.

Grades 7-12: Students coming through the food service line shall pay the daily rate or be refused service. This refusal of service shall continue until the account has a positive balance.

The ability to pay shall not be a deterrent to participation in the lunch program. Low-income families may qualify for free or reduced prices upon submitting an application.

Please see the complete Board Policy – Food Service 763 within this newsletter.

The Clear Lake School District would like to remind you of the program called e-Funds for Schools. This program offers an option for parents/guardians to make payments to their Foodservice account on-line. This program may be accessed through your “Family Access” or use the link on the District web site. Parents/Guardians are able to have their lunch payments electronically withdrawn from their checking account or charged to their credit card and have the ability to do so at any time. Families set up and maintain their own logins, passwords, and payment preferences similar to other on-line banking services.

The “e-Funds for Schools” electronic payment service is provided to the school by a third party service provider. The service provider has a nominal fee for their service. If you have any questions, please call the Business Office at 715-263-2114.

Registration FeesRegistration fees include the costs of school events, school supplies, lyceum programs, towel usage, etc. The fees are as follows:

• Grades 7-12 $10.00 – Required Registration fee for all students at the beginning of each school year. Students are required to pay the $2 admission fee to attend school athletics events until their Registration fee is paid.

• Grades K-6 No fee, but students will have the choice of purchasing a season athletic pass for $5.00 or pay $2.00 per game for admission.

The above information, plus bus rider rules, attendance policies and free lunch applications have been sent to parents. If you did not receive this information, please call the Business Office (263-2114), and it will be sent to you.

The School District of Clear Lake Food Service program operates on a pre-payment system for school meals, milk, and ala carte. We require that parents pre-pay and maintain a positive balance in their family accounts in order to participate. Families can monitor their meal accounts through Family Access (Contact the School District on how to sign up if you have not already done so). All families should review their estimated charges and make a deposit to their family account to assure uninterrupted participation in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program.

Every effort will be made by the Clear Lake School District to keep parent(s)/guardian(s) informed regarding their child’s meal accounts. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the parent(s)/guardian(s) to maintain a positive balance in the account. School Messenger calls and emails are sent out several times a week notifying of negative balances and low balances. If you receive a call, please add money to your student’s account immediately. Your students may not be allowed to participate in the District’s meal program until a positive balance is available for use. When the account balance is above zero, regular charging may resume.

Payments on account may be made by sending a check/cash with your student, mailing a check or money order, using E-funds for Schools on line payment service, or in person at any school office.

WHEN A STUDENT’S MEAL ACCOUNT BECOMES NEGATIVE (UNPAID MEAL CHARGES):Junior High and High School students are informed during the school day when their account has gone negative and that they are not to make any further purchases until payment is made on their account. They are responsible for communicating with you that they need money deposited into their account. Parents/Guardians can also request a low balance e-mail notification in Family Access when their account balance goes below a specified amount. Students may bring in payment to the Business office each day to purchase a meal for that day only prior to going through the breakfast or lunch line. Payments are not accepted in the lunch line.

A family may apply for free or reduced priced meals at any time by completing an application form found on the website or in any office. If income decreases or family size increases, another application may be completed. Meal charges prior to the approval for free or reduced cannot be changed per federal government regulations; those charges must be paid. Students approved for free or reduced must pay the full cost of ala carte items, extra milk, or sport lunches.

Elementary Students will be spoken to by the Principal or Counselor and instructed they may bring a lunch from home or may be provided a peanut butter sandwich and milk for up to three days (which will be charged at an Ala carte price to the family account). A personal call will be made or an e-mail notification will be sent by the District Office to let the parent/guardian know that they will need to provide meals and beverages from home until sufficient funds are deposited in the account to bring it back to a positive balance. After the three days, if the account is not up-to-date, the

student will be required to bring a lunch from home. If a student repeatedly or continuously has a negative balance, and the parent fails to provide a cold lunch or lunch money, school district personnel may intercede on behalf of the student(s) by filing a report with Social Services or another appropriate agency.

Ala Carte purchases – (with the exception of Elementary milk purchases) may be available at the Junior High/High School only and can only be purchased if there is a positive balance in the meal account. (This includes milk purchased for a meal brought from home). Parents/Guardians are asked to fill out an Ala Carte Form if you want your child to be able to make ala carte purchases (sport lunches are not considered ala carte). Students are not allowed to purchase ala carte items for other students. Administration has the right to revoke ala carte privileges from any student if they deem necessary. Students eligible for free meals will not be denied a meal because of a negative account balance. However, they will not be allowed to charge ala carte items, including milk, to have with a meal brought from home.

Milk purchases: Milk purchased for a meal brought from home, or a second milk is considered ala carte and is charged at the annual determined price.

Delinquent Accounts: If an account is delinquent, a payment plan may be arranged with the District Office. If a payment plan is agreed upon, the student may resume charging meals as long as payments are being made on time and according to the plan. If payment plan is not followed, student/parents/guardians will be notified that no charges are allowed until the account has a positive balance.

Administration is expected to protect taxpayers of the District by making reasonable effort to collect all delinquent food service charges. If there are any unpaid meal charges at the end of the school year, they will carryover with the student/family to the new school year. Graduating seniors must have their lunch account paid in full before participating in the Graduation ceremonies. Accounts with a positive balance at the end of the school year will carry over to the following school year. If a family moves out of district, or becomes eligible for free meals and would like a refund, requests can be made to the District Office.

2019 WI All-State Mixed Choir

“Hamilton: The Musical”

Elizabeth Larson has been selected as an Alto for the 2019 Wisconsin All-State Mixed Choir. She auditioned in February and was notified that she was selected. The Wisconsin School Music Association holds auditions for about 700+ vocalists from schools of all sizes, both private and public, throughout Wisconsin. Around 100 are chosen. Elizabeth was the only vocalist in any of the 13 schools of the Lakeland Music Conference who was selected for this honor. She rehearsed with other choir members for a week in June in Green Bay, and will reunite with the group in October to perform during the annual Music Teachers’ Convention in Madison. Congrats Elizabeth!

As an exclamation point to the “Hamilton: The Musical” class running during the 2018-2019 school year, 12 Clear Lakers traveled to Chicago the first weekend in July, toured the city and saw the play. Other than Broadway in New York, Chicago is the only city in the U.S. with a permanent Hamilton Musical residency.

The Hamilton Musical is a pop-culture phenomenon and is 2 hours and 40 minutes of non-stop motion, song, dance, and U.S. History. The class is a semester-long course using the 46 songs as the textbook, teaching history, civics, political science, economics, foreign policy, and musical theory.

Students, sign up to take the class when you are a Junior or Senior!

Travel Club’s Costa Rica AdventureLeaving June 11th, 22 Clear Lake students, parents, and staff spent 10 days in this tropical Central American country. Our students experienced Latin American language, music, dancing, food, wildlife, and a strong sense of conservation of natural resources, which is a proud constitution of this ecologically minded, rain-forested nation. Our students also had a sense for adventure and went kayaking, whitewater rafting, ziplining, played soccer with a local high school, and swam in the Pacific Ocean, among many other activities. They viewed an assortment of wildlife including crocodiles, toucans, sloths, and more.

We couldn’t have been more impressed and proud of our students in how they represented themselves, had open minds, a sense of adventure. They came back more confident, more accepting of differences of others, and more well-rounded, young adults.

Stay tuned for information on the 2021 Travel Club coming this fall!

Character Education: Medal of Honor ClassMr. Crawford’s “Character Education: Medal of Honor” class has had the pleasure of some amazing guest speakers. Centered around the Core Values of Integrity, Courage, Commitment, Sacrifice, Patriotism, and Citizenship, the purpose of the class is to teach the students to live with, and do honorable things, every day. We have been fortunate to have Mr. Jim Adams, NASA Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineer, Dr. Lang Jacobson, US Navy and Marine Veteran of Afghanistan, Laura Nguyen, nurse anesthetist and 3rd World Africa Volunteer, and Molly Hudgens, Citizen Medal of Honor recipient join the class. Both Mr. Adams and Dr. Jacobson also stayed for Contemporary History as well. EMS Visit to Elementary Box Tops WinnerMembers of our local ambulance crew visited the Elementary School this week. They talked about what they do and helped students feel more familiar with emergency services. They also did a talk and skit on bike helmets and safety.

2nd Grader Oliver Wood earned the chance to give Mr. Petersen a pie in the face at the end of the school year. He won the right by turning in Box Tops for Education to the PTO and then having his name drawn.

FCCLA State Office Leadership CampSamantha Kelly enjoyed a Summer Leadership Camp for the Wisconsin State Officers at UW Stevens Point. Officers engaged in active leadership, teamwork, etiquette and goal setting.

Sam spent time helping to organize upcoming events such as our Wisconsin Leadership Academy’s (WLA), the State Leadership Conference and the National Leadership Conference.

Some of Sam’s goals include: increasing state membership, updating technology & social media influence as well as gaining new sponsors/partners in FCCLA.

Clear Lake FCCLA is very proud of Sam’s outstanding leadership and the journey she will take as this year’s Vice President of Public Relations.

** If you are interested in becoming a FCCLA sponsor or partner at the local chapter level or state level, please contact Clear Lake FCCLA for your donations. No gift is too small.

FCCLA LeadershipClear Lake FCCLA (Family, Career and Community, Leaders of America) is proud of their hard work and accomplishments in their competitive STAR event categories.

Each team worked eagerly to positively influence our school, community and families and showed off their talents at the State Leadership Conference in the Wisconsin Dells, April 8-10.

Members worked with elementary students through elderly adults and made an impactful contribution to be proud of. Whether it was teaching sign language to 6th grade or personal space to 1st grade, promoting FCCLA throughout the high school, closing the generational gap between teens and adults or running a full prom dress exchange, these kids have proven - they are leaders!!

Aside from the competitive events, members also got to hear a motivational speech from keynote speaker “The Voice” star Kat Perkins, many breakout sessions related to leadership development & personal growth plus a live concert with “The Voice” runner up, Chris Kroeze.

Additionally, Samantha Kelly will represent Clear Lake FCCLA and the State of Wisconsin as the 2019-2020 WI FCCLA Vice President of Public Relations. This is a high honor and we are so proud of Sam!!
