SCHOOL NEWS Mixed emotions at the London Cup Final

On Friday 19th May, the Kingsdale Year 7

girls’ and boys’ football teams attended the

London Cup Final hoping to make history and

bring back both trophies. Sadly, the boys

faced their first defeat in 16 games, losing 3-

0. The girls battled hard and took a 2-0 lead

due to two amazing goals from Tamoi Forbes.

Grey Coat Hospital found a wave of

inspiration and fought their way back into the

game forcing us into extra time with a score

line of 2-2. Kingsdale held their positions with

a solid defence led by Aleyna Demirikilic until

the final whistle. As it was a draw, the

success was shared between both schools.

Kingsdale returned to school with very tired

legs but the trophy in hand!

Well done to all the students involved and a

massive thank you to parents/guardians for

their support this season. We look forward to

more exciting competitions next season.

Kingsdale Foundation School

celebrated the World Day for Cultural

Diversity on Sunday, 21st May 2017

through a vibrant cultural festival.

The Kingsdale Family International Culture Day was a

flamboyant display of music, dances, arts, crafts, cuisine,

costumes and sports from countries across the world

and was a real treat for those involved.

The event raised funds for the charity ‘Mind’ that

provides services to support mental well-being.

The festival was proudly hosted by the Culture Day

Committee, which included students from both Upper

and Lower School, who contributed to the organisation of

this scintillating day. The multicultural feast was the highlight

of the day with contributions of gourmet style cooking from

parents, students and staff representing a wide array of

cuisines - Greek, Palestinian, Caribbean, Algerian, Mexican,

Indian, Chinese, Italian, Turkish - to name a few! The steel

band performances in Trinidad & Tobago style enthralled

the audience, whilst the African drumming workshops

engaged the community in developing a rhythmic talent.

The Martial Arts performance captivated a wide audience

with extraordinary skills demonstrated by the British Guba

Doce Pares Master Nimesh Desai, 8th degree black belt,

highest ranked in the UK. The Kingsdale dancers added

further radiance to the day with the Bollywood and African

dances that were beautifully synchronised and were a real

pleasure to the senses.

The festival was also an opportunity to appreciate the

exotic arts and crafts from around the world - handmade

jewellery with every piece made out of potter’s clay, hair

accessories, henna hand art, knitwear for children,

horticultural stalls, beauty products from Morocco and

then an opportunity to speak in patois and write in the

Chinese script - all of which contributed to an exuberant

experience! The dress code was to come adorned in a

cultural costume and the visitors brought a real zing to the

event by making an extra effort. For those who desired to

try a costume from another country, we offered our very

own fashion boutique for visitors to choose a costume

from and get their photo taken in an exclusive cultural

costume at the Kingsdale PhotoStudio organised by the

school’s Art Department. Several visitors tried tying the

6-yard long Indian saree and made an elegant statement!

The younger audience also had plenty of activities to keep

themselves entertained – the Jump and Ladder bouncy

castle and Minion bouncy castle kept them occupied, along

with an exciting range of party treats like cupcakes, candy

floss, ice creams, slush and popcorns! There were fun and

entertainment interactive games led by the House Captains

whilst the ‘Science Culture’ and the ‘Literature from around

the world’ stalls continued to intellectually stimulate the

audience with plenty to feed the brain.

The day was an absolute joy and it magnificently brought

the community together in a mutual appreciation of the

colour and beauty that cultural diversity adds to our lives.

“The day was an

absolute joy!”

To everyone involved,

a big thank you from

Kingsdale Foundation School for such a

successful endeavour!

Year 7 Mathematics Scholars ‘STEM’ trip to

Westminster University

This exciting excursion saw our scholars explore a simple

idea of what shapes could be made by cutting up a

single loop of paper with ONE TWIST in it….a MOBIUS

STRIP. I don’t wish to spoil the surprise - We were all

astounded. Try it for yourselves using this youtube

link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SArmcV8XyFY

The extension to this investigation, was a challenge to

cut a Bagel into two halves so that two rings would be

created – neither could be cut in half BUT each ring

would be locked inside the

other - like a link on a

chain. Both had to be

separate from each other

so that they could move

about freely within the hole

that they both shared.

Mr Dennington’s perfect Bagel

Following this, students taking the science option on this

trip undertook the challenge to see if they could tell

whether a liquid was an Acid or Alkali – using a single

‘indicator’ for ‘cabbage’!

After that there were more

practical exercises where

pupils had free reign to use

their knowledge on acids

and alkalis, to attempt to

keep the PH value of ‘their’

given fish pond, neutral.

The challenge was to note the ratio of quantities they

had used in their 5ml sample of pond water, and scale it

up for a large pond of 3 by 2 by 1 metres. This was a

good cross curricula maths and science challenge where

lots of conversions of units of measurement with regards

to volume, were required.

It was a successful day that

challenged pupils to think

differently, including in the

mathematics session, ‘popping

into the 4th dimension’ to see

how a 3D shape would look there!

The coach journey was interesting too – past the Houses

of Parliament, over Westminster Bridge, round the garden

wall of Buckingham Palace, down Oxford Street, past the

BBC centre and the Post Office Tower – definitely a

thorough sightseeing tour to get the day off to an

inspiring start.

Year 9 Novel - Willow in the Healing

We are incredibly proud of the achievements of the

following Year 9 students who collaborated to write their

first novel, Willow in the Healing - Darcey Gosford, Edward

Ifekoya, Jahtreas Pitt, Keisi Smajli, Maya Freshwater, Nico

Weide, Ronnie Tidder and Sanjida Khan! This creative

writing project was funded by Shine Foundation and

overseen by the White Water Writers organisation.

Every word of the story, every idea and every chapter is

entirely the work of the students. No teachers, parents or

other students touched a single key during the production

process! It was a true delight and privilege to see this

group of young people turn into professional novelists -

from planning, drafting, editing, proof reading the text to

making crucial decisions about the publication aspects of

this novel and working together as a team of reflective

writers!

The story is set in a High

School, where life is

always full of drama!

Friends turning on each

other, characters falling

head over heels in love,

parents with drinking

problems and relation-

ship issues...

Follow Cassie, Beatrice and Valentina as they find out just

how much drama you can experience in a Sixth Form by turning the pages of this engrossing novel! The novel is

available in the Upper School Library for young adult

readers to relish. Well done to our Year 9 novelists!

Year 7 Cricket

Season opens

with a Smash!

Tuesday 23rd

May 2017 saw

the cricket

season kick off

at Kingsdale

School with the

Year 7 team

playing Colfe’s

School at home.

The boys were eager to impress in the first game and

they certainly did. Colfe’s batted first to score an

impressive 74-5 off 16 overs. However, the mighty

Kingsdale smashed that out the park with 5 overs left

to play scoring an impressive 75-3 off 15 overs putting

the boys in contention to win the league.

Man of the Match was awarded to Max Stewart

The boys’ next opponents come in the form of Alleyn's

School and Bishop Thomas Grant. They will be two

very tough but exciting games. The boys are training

hard and are confident they can again be victorious.

Mock Elections - Thursday June 8th 2017

With less than three weeks to go before the

country goes to the polls again, we want

to kick start the BIG CONVERSATION around

what the next Government is going to have

in store for the British public. We are sure

that at home many parents have already

started getting their sons or daughters

listening to the debates and engaging in the

views portrayed in the media. In school,

students will continue having those

passionate debates during lesson time and

with tutors, on the issues they feel really

matter to them as they look into the future.

What type of society do they want to be

part of? How will the policies that this next

Government implement, shape the next

generation? We would be keen to hear your

views. Contact us via email at
