WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS On November 26th 2015, the Vic. Parliament passed the Child Wellbeing Safety Amendment (Child safe standards Bill 2015) to introduce seven child safety standards into law. Ministerial Order 870 provides the framework for how schools will be required to comply with the standards. Under the law schools have an important role to play in supporting children and families and in protecting students who may be at risk of harm due to abuse or neglect. Under the Children Youth and Families, primary and secondary staff, teachers and principals are prescribed mandatory reporters. They must make a report to Child Protection if they believe there are reasonable grounds, that a child or a person is in need of protection. Schools must establish and implement policies to assess and verify the suitability of volunteers who will work with children including requiring all volunteers to provide evidence of their suitability. This evidence is a (WWCC) Working with children check. LEARNING A SECOND LANGUAGE Would you encourage your child to learn another language? One important reason- “Language skills and cultural sensitivity will be the currency of this new world over”………………General Cosgrove speaking to a conference concerned with the state of language learning in Australian schools. 2005 Another obvious reason is to enable more effective communication with non- English speaking people-Learning another language is about recognising the realities of life- 94% of the population speak a language other than English. In Australia there are more than 200 different languages spoken and 16% of our population speaks a language other than English at home. In learning a new language, students learn new things that they can learn in other ways: An important part of our PYP programme is the importance of Mother Tongue language. Part of being a responsible citizen in the 21st century is to be able to communicate effectively and the transfer of knowledge across cultures. Through learning another language children can understand and value their culture and the culture s of others and they can view the world from another perspective. Second language learning can be an important aid to the development of generic cognitive and life skills. It is often forgotten that learning a second language develops literacy skills. There is considerable evidence to suggest that learning another language can enhance literacy and a student’s first language. For example, second language learners develop and enhance their skills and strategies for making meaning from words which transfers to English. What can you do to help…………………..

1. Discuss the benefits of language learning with your child. Language seem hard

but there is a great deal gained from sticking with it.

2. Just as with any other subject, share interest in what your child is learning and

listen. Let children teach you what they have learnt and let them practice their

vocabulary.

3. Get details of the school’s language offerings, the content and quality of the LOTE

program and how proficient our school languages teacher expects your child to

become

4. If you are a speaker of a language other than English, as many parents are, there

may be ways in which you can support Language learning and the development

of intercultural knowledge and Mother Tongue at your school.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge began a few weeks ago and we are excited to be participating. The challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 7th September 2018. Children from Prep to 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name on the Honour Roll. To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and visit www.education.vic.gov.au/prc. If you require more information please speak to Maureen Luke the PRC, Coordinator.

Student Enrolments for 2019 It is very pleasing that high interest is regularly shown at our school. Prospective parents have already begun making enquiries about 2019 places for Foundation students. Enquiries will continue throughout the year and will come from local families, those looking to move into the area and, families from much further afield. Through these encounters, we gain feedback about Glenroy West and information which clearly indicates that our learning environment and practices are held in high regard. Foundation for 2019 This is very important information not just for current parents who will have another child beginning foundation in 2019 but for all members of our school community. Our enrolment policy and how decisions are made about admission to Glenroy West Primary School is public information and as such is detailed in newsletters, information sessions and on our website. If any family has a child to enrol for Foundation 2019, please email the Assistant Principal, Anne Kyriacou- [email protected] or call the school on 9306-8955. Enrolment Packs- Please note the collection of enrolment packs are available at the school office. Enrolment Places for 2019 The demand for places at Glenroy West PS and kindergarten is high. Enrolment forms are located on the school website or alternatively an enrolment form can be obtained from the school office. School Tours are conducted on Tuesday and Thursday from 9.15am. If these days are not suitable we can arrange an alternate day and time for your convenience. A personalised tour with the Principal Pam Streete or Anne Kyriacou Assistant Principal can be arranged at your request. Please arrange a suitable day and time via the office staff. Term 2: CHESS- GRADES 2-6 Dear Parents/carers, We will be requesting $5.00 per lesson which will go towards the cost of the program and our CHESS Master Endre teaching the strategies and skills. A one hour class operates after sport on a Friday morning. Any queries please speak to Pam or your child’s teacher. Thank you.

ABSENCES When your child is absent or late to school we are required to present a reason for the absence to the Department of Education DET. You are welcome to write a note to the class teacher brought to school by your child on their return. There are other avenues you can use to inform us of your child’s absence. A phone call or via Compass is extremely helpful. It is very important that children attend school daily except if they are unwell or in extreme circumstances. We know that every day at school counts! EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY.EVERY DAY COUNTS We are presently reviewing our processes for daily attendance and ‘lateness.’ DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD’S BEST LEARNING TIME IS THE START OF THE SCHOOL DAY? THAT’S WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS THE MOST! It is very important to receive notification from parents or guardians when children are absent from school as we have an accountability to the Department of Education. Please use the following methods to inform us and include your child’s name and grade, date and reason for the absence.

Phone in

Written note

Speak directly to the Classroom teacher. Teachers have a Duty of Care to call parents if a child is absent

more than 2 days.

Respond to text message

At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. This information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement. OSCH PROGRAM- BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE Please phone OSCH Coordinator Donna Kirby for any bookings on her Mobile 0422 584 965. If your child is attending OSCH School Care please ensure you have completed the application form. Please ensure that invoices are paid on a weekly basis. All bookings need to be communicated to Donna via the mobile above 0422 584 965. Thanks for your cooperation. Have a great week ahead Kind regards, Pam & Staff.

Effective ‘Hand Hygiene’ to prevent infectious diseases

Infectious disease outbreaks such as gastroenteritis and influenza can severely impact student attendance, learning and the welfare of the school community. Establishing good hand hygiene practices at a young age is key to preventing the spread of infectious disease. The creation of healthy habits during childhood is important to ensure lifelong healthy decisions and actions. Effective hand hygiene practices are critical to the prevention of communicable disease outbreaks in schools and local communities. It will also help build healthy habits into the future.

Washing hands with soap and water at key times is the most effective way to prevent the spread of gastrointestinal and respiratory infections in community settings. The key times are:

after going to the toilet before and after eating after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose after touching pets and other animals whenever your hands look dirty In addition, washing hands before and after eating is encouraged as a strategy to minimise the risks associated with known food allergies.

This curriculum is supported by a public education campaign. You can access this 'Soapy Hero' campaign, which includes animation and resources, on the Better Health Channel, see: www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/soapy-hero.

Literacy Snippets from Anne Reading and Word-Attack Strategies: Relevant to all age groups of students

From last week: Reading is not just pronouncing words—it requires understanding. Most experienced

readers use a variety of strategies to understand text. Teachers at Glenroy West teach these strategies to

beginning readers through literacy lessons. The following strategies can help students understand any text

in any subject. You can encourage the use of these strategies at home as well.

Strategy 2

Visualizing

Many children think visually, using shapes, spatial relationships, movement, and colors, and can benefit

greatly from this strategy. How to help your child:

Imagine a fiction story taking place as if it were a movie. Imagine the characters' features. Picture

the plot in time and space.

Imagine processes and explanations happening visually. Use nouns, verbs, and adjectives to create

pictures, diagrams, or other mental images.

Strategy 3

Asking and Answering Questions

Having your child form their own questions helps them recognize confusion and encourages active

learning. Explain to them:

Before reading, think about the subject based on the title, chapter heads, and visual information.

Make note of anything you are curious about.

While reading, pause and write down any questions. Be sure to ask any questions if there is

confusion.

Look for the answers while reading.

Anne Kyriacou Assistant Principal

Parents and carers can have a big impact on their children’s education. By providing learning opportunities and

support at home you can help encourage numeracy learning from an early age right through to high school. You

can help your child in many ways – below are some suggestions from the DET website.

Help your child see how you use maths in everyday life. For example, explore how you use fractions in

cooking; percentages while shopping; distance in driving; keeping score in sports games and telling the time.

Encourage your child to practise the times tables and to solve simple maths problems in their head. Try asking

them to:

work out how many pieces they will need to cut the birthday cake into so that everyone has a slice

work out the actual cost of discounted items (e.g. 25% off $20)

figure out when you will arrive at a destination (e.g. “It is 4:15 pm now. It will take us 30 minutes to get

home, what time will we arrive?”)

If your child is struggling to work it out, suggest they show you on paper or talk you through how they are trying to work it out so you can help them.

Maths is a learned skill that improves with practise. Talk positively about maths and encourage your child to

practise as much as possible as part of a regular routine.
