Finance

M&S School invoices were sent out last week. Payments of invoices can be made to the finance office. Payment can be made by card, cash, centre-pay or an agreed upon payment plan.

School Card applications can now be made for this year. To access the service we ask you to lodge your application online or alternatively we do have an iPad set up in the front office for you to do your application online. We encourage all parents/guardians who believe they may be eligible for assistance, to complete online for 2020 as soon as possible.

Please be aware that no student will be automatically approved for school card, a new application must be completed each year. If you have students at more than one school, an application must be completed for each school.

School Photos 2020 School Photos for 2020 will be held on the 20th of March. More information will be available closer to the date.

Labelling To all of our families I would like to give you the reminder to label all your child’s belongings, hats, drink bottles, jumpers etc.

Lunch Orders The price list for Adams Deli, who supply our lunches, can be accessed on the School website or on the school facebook page. Please check the price of your child’s order as there have been a few increases this year and the shop has been covering these but cannot continue to do so and do not want students to miss out on their lunches. Thank you.

Wellbeing I am Rick and I’m the Wellbeing Leader at Morphett Vale East Primary School. Prior to starting here, I was the Wellbeing Leader at Seaford K-7 School. I spent 10 years at Seaford in various roles before moving to Morphett Vale East. This has seen me go from being deep in my comfort zone to being the “new kid at school”. So far, this has been made easier by the great team we have here as well as the friendly and welcoming students. What exactly is wellbeing I hear you ask? The dictionary definition of wellbeing is

'the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy.'

Feelings of wellbeing are fundamental to the overall health of an individual, enabling them to successfully overcome difficulties and achieve what they want out of life. Past experiences, attitudes and outlook can all impact wellbeing as can physical or emotional trauma following specific incidents. Recently the Department for Education has increased the focus on the wellbeing of students in the school setting. Research has shown that mentally healthy children learn better and are less likely to engage in behaviours that interfere with learning. When students can meet academic expectations, they feel better about themselves, become more connected to school and participate more actively in the community. I am not a qualified counsellor and I do not offer therapeutic intervention or professional counselling services. My main role is to foster positive engagement and behavior and learning at school, educating and coaching students to manage relationships with peers, teachers and families and making referrals to professional services when required. I look forward to getting to know the students and families at Morphett Vale East over the coming months and supporting them in their learning journey. Rick Whitbread Student Wellbeing

The Parent’s library is open Tuesday mornings from 8:30-9:00. To borrow a book, fill in the details in the details in the book provided

Sports News Term 1 State-wide Schools Sport (Knockout) For the first time since I have been at the school, we have been able to enter a team in the SAPSASA State-wide School Sport (formerly known as knockout sport) boy’s tennis competition. Our tennis boys will play games against another school hoping to progress to the next round, good luck boys! District Trials There are a number of trials currently happening for the Onkaparinga North SAPSASA District. Please see Mitch Hume ASAP for information and permission to trial forms. Boys/Girls Tennis – Year 6/7 – Trials Thursday 13th, 20th & 27th February, Morphett Vale Tennis Club. Swimming – Born in 2007-2010 – Monday 24th February, Marion Outdoor Swimming Pool For up to date info about SAPSASA District sports and trials follow the Onkaparinga North SAPSASA Facebook page. Cross Country 2020 As we have done the last few years, we will be looking to send a strong contingent of runners to the Onkaparinga North/South cross-country running event. We have always had a strong running group at the school highlighted in 2017 by our 10-year-old girls coming first in the team classification. Our runners regularly place in the top 20, a great achievement against 100+ runners. The event will be held at Noarlunga Downs Primary School Thursday 2nd of April (Week 10). This year the event will be open to students born in the year 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007. Information and nomination forms will be given to students in the coming weeks. Sports Day 2020 Sports Day is an opportunity for students at Morphett Vale East School to come together and participate in games, challenges, physical activity and friendly competition. It is also a day where we welcome families to come to the school to support their kids in a fun and friendly environment. It will be once again held on the final day of term 1, Thursday 9th of April. Preparation and planning has already begun so stay tuned for more details later in the term. Health and Physical Education Health and PE is an important part of the Australian Curriculum. In health, students learn about nutrition, exercise, safety, growth, relationships, family as well as many more topics. Research shows that when kids feel comfortable talking about their health with their families, they are more likely to make strong healthy choices, as they get older and speak up if there is a problem. Therefore, I always encourage families to support your child’s learning and their health by having regular conversations with them. Physical Education (or ‘PE’) is also another important part of a child’s learning and development. In the early years of PE students, learn the fundamental skills that will allow them to join in games and sports later on in life. Skills like running, jumping, throwing, catching among others. They also learn how to cooperate with others, follow rules, fair play and many social skills. During the latter years of primary PE, I try to provide opportunities for students try as many different games and sports as possible. The main aim of PE is not necessarily to develop the next Lebron James or Lionel Messi, but to give students the skills to be able to be active for the rest of their life, whatever their interest is. A great way to support your child’s learning in PE is to get out there and be active with your child. What to wear? Due to the active nature of PE is important that students have clothes and footwear suitable for active play. So I do ask that on their PE day (please check with your child’s teacher if you are unsure of the day) that your child wears flat and enclosed shoes. Lace-up or Velcro sneakers are ideal. Also please ensure that your child has a wide-brimmed hat and clothes that will allow them to run, jump, throw etc. Illness and Injury I understand that from time to time children are unable to participate in PE due to illness or injury. In these cases, I do ask that parents or caregivers to notify me or your child’s teacher with a brief written and signed note, or email prior to their PE day. If you have any questions or concerns about Health and PE at the school, I encourage you to send me an email at [email protected], or come and have a chat. I can normally be found around the gym or in room 12 (opposite the bike racks). Mitch Hume PE Teacher I SAPSASA Coordinator
