Welcome
School Newsletter
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of The Deanery, I hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. I am delighted to introduce our latest special newsletter. It is great to see the work that our pupils are doing across all areas of the curriculum. We are very proud of them and look forward to seeing them all again soon. Stay safe. Mr Wood
Year 11 Prom Update
As stated in one of Mr Wood's earlier letters, one of the very disappointing aspects of "lockdown" is not being able to celebrate with the Year 11 pupils at our annual prom, which was scheduled for 3rd July.
We are delighted to confirm that we have managed to secure a provisional date (provisional, as we don't know where we will be with social distancing regulations; this will need to be reviewed nearer the time).
Our new prom date is Friday 20th November 2020. All arrangements remain the same. Any money paid is carried over. More details will follow nearer the time.

Year 10 Prefects
Year 10 pupils were invited by email to apply to be a Prefect for the following academic year. Pupils
completed an application form and short letter detailing their reasons for wanting to be a prefect and
explaining why they thought they were the best candidates for this role. We were looking for pupils who
will always uphold the school values, and the words of the Deanery mantra, to the highest level!
After careful consideration and lengthy discussions, the following pupils were appointed and will be
wearing the coveted grey Prefect tie on their return to school. Congratulations to them all!

Food Technology
Eat your way around the world One of the many joys of holidays is getting to try local delicacies from around our own country and explore
delicious treats when travelling abroad. With all travel currently suspended, local restaurants closed we may be
missing some of our favourite tasty dishes.
Pupils are being challenged each week to find out about local British delicacies and also investigate countries from
different continents by finding out about climate, staple foods and traditional dishes. When possible pupils are
also being encouraged to make a dish they have found out about and send photographs in to their teacher.
Pupils are busy eating their way around the world – so far:
Charlie Cummins and Madeline Calder both found out all about the traditional Lancashire Hot Pot.
Cameron Haren researched Cuba looking at climate, staple foods and traditional dishes. Chovin Faik has told
us all about her favourite restaurant - Albert’s Schloss and researched traditional German foods.
Jason Tran Nguyen researched into his favourite dish Pho from Vietnam, traditional foods from Norway and
closer to home found out all about The Coventry God Cake, a traditional pastry baked by Godparents and
eaten at Christenings.
Joe Taylor explored the tradition of everyone’s favourite Fish & Chips
Finn Murphy Baker has looked in to the history of the Full English Breakfast and
also Raggmunk a traditional Swedish winter dish.
Some pupils have even had a go at producing some dishes from around the world:

Business Studies
AND THE WINNER IS …
The Business Studies Department ran a competition to create a social distanced advertisement for a brand of your choice.
The winners of the competition are:
Daniel Moore Year 10 (Mercedes AMG) Sam Halliwell L6 (GAP)
They will both receive a £10 Amazon voucher. Well done.
A Poetic Week.
This week, Year 9 have been writing some carefully crafted poetry with the only theme being ‘Thoughts’.
Here are some wonderful pieces we have had so far:
My Mind Today I Thought About
My mind playing tricks, My mind making me sick, My mind making me mop, My mind never stops. I need to do work, I need to revise, I need to sleep, I need to eat. My mind confusing me, My mind needs to be free, My mind wants school My mind is so cruel Liam Bowker
Today I thought about my family,
The bonding and love we have shared
24/7: with my sister, brother, and parents.
Today I thought about my school,
Empty classrooms, abandoned corridors
And history of smiling teachers.
Today I thought about my friends,
Conversations that strive happily.
Cameron Haren
No escape from the stale lockdown life.
Today I thought about once thriving schools,
Collecting dust, abandoned.
Today I thought about the stormy weather,
People unable to get out
Begging to be reunited with freedom.
Today I thought about people playing online,
What used to be one of many ways to have fun with friends
Now lacklustre and monotonous.
Today I thought about families, divided
The closest of family members.
Now gone months without a single visit.
No escape from the stale lockdown life.

Over the next few weeks, we are going to be investigating how Computing may affect our future world.
We will start by learning about Artificial Intelligence and examples of how this is used in our lives at the
moment.
We will begin by finding out how machines gain their ‘intelligence’ through the process of Machine
Learning. Students will then have an opportunity to program their own Artificial Intelligence program to
help save the world’s oceans.

The Great Commission
Religious Studies
What is the great commission?
The great commission is the message that Jesus gave his disciples to spread around the
world after he ascended to heaven. Jesus asked the disciples to go and spread his
teachings and his world across the globe so everyone can know. And that’s what the
disciples did and thus the religion Christianity was born!
Quote from the bible:
“Go and make disciples of all
nations, baptising them in the name
of their Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
obey everything that I have
commanded you.”
What did the disciples do?
The disciples travelled around the world, spreading
the word of God and making disciples in every
nation like Jesus asked them too. This meant that
other people would spread the world of Christianity
until there was disciples in every single nation
across the world. This was how Christianity was
founded and born!
What might Christians do to show they are now following the teachings of Jesus?
Some Christians carry out missionary work across the globe, others commit themselves to
religious life (becoming a priest or minister) while others live a Christian life to others.
Abbie Downey Year 7
Our pupils have produced some excellent work during home learning. Here are some examples.
Ines Huete-Proffitt
Where is God?
1. Is God wise and just?
2. A heavenly control centre.
3. A servant of God.
4. The one who is opposed.
5. So God rewards him.
6. To take everything away from job.
7. Job loses everyone and everything.
I agree with the quote ‘God cannot exist if there is evil and suffering in the world.’ As God is
supposedly omnipotent and omnibenevolent, which means he is all powerful and all loving, in
which case he would stop the suffering in the world and not just that he would want to do
that as he is all loving and would not want to see suffering on those is claimed to love. On the
contrary it is possible there is a God but is testing everyone like in Job which would justify why
there are highs and lows in life
8. He begins to doubt God and is in despair.
9. Job’s friends think he has done something to be punished.
10. Job asks God to explain why he punished him.
11. God shows Job the universe and shows him how complicated it
is.
12. Job learns how complex the world is.
13. God gives Job double of what he had in the beginning.
14. The story of Job could help a response as people can learn to
appreciate the things we walk by and ignore on a normal day
and to be grateful for the simple yet complexed things of life.

Year 8 have been learning about the rise of Hitler and the destruction
of democracy in Germany during the 1930s. Shown here is an
excellent piece of work from Rhiannon who has explained how the
actions of Hitler and the Nazis exploited the feelings of the people in
Germany at this time. To support your learning we recommend “Hitler:
The Rise of Evil”, available in two parts on YouTube here -

History
Hello Historians,
Over the past 3 months, we have shown our support for the incredible workers in the NHS in a
number of ways, including our regular Thursday “claps” and “Thank you, NHS” displays.
We recognise that proper health care is a fundamental right for everyone in our country. The NHS is
funded by us, the public, so that everyone can have access to treatment or support they may need.
However, it hasn’t always been this way. The NHS was founded in 1948, following on from the
Beveridge Report which recommended free medical, dental and eye care for all. Since then, the NHS
has saved millions of lives, including many who may not have been previously able to afford
treatment. To learn more about the History of our NHS, we recommend starting here
https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Birth-of-the-NHS/
Year 9 have been completing projects on crime and punishment in the Early Modern period (c1500-
c1700) relating to the panic about witchcraft in the 17th century. To support your learning, we
recommend you watch the programme “Bloody
Britain: The Witchfinder General” which is available
here on YouTube -

Year 10 have been completing their studies on Early
Elizabethan England. Here you’ll see an excellent
revision grid from Cerys which covers Elizabethan
society and explorers. To support your learning, we
recommend you complete our quizzes on Microsoft
Forms, which have been set by class teachers on
Synergy “Class Work” and Homework.
